PATENT OFFICE.
JOSIAH HARP, OF ELLERTON, MARYLAND.
ELEVATOR FOR THRASHING-I VIACHI NES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,054, dated July 12, 1881.
' Application filed February 3, 1881. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSIAH HARP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ellerton, in the county of Frederick and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevators for Thrashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to. make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an attachment to a thrashing-machine for elevating the grain and conveying it across the machine to any desired point on either side of the machine; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as more fully hereinafter described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Figure l in the drawings represents a sectional view of the device applied to a thrashing-machine; and Fig. 2, a side view of the device,'with the chute in section.
A represents a suitable box or case, in which are journaled the two rollers B B, carrying'the endless belt 0. It is provided at its lower end with a projecting mouth, D, for receiving the grain from the spout E of the thrasher, and has at its upper end a tube, F, through which the grain raised by the cups to on the elevatorbelt is discharged. The chute G is provided with a tubular open end, I), loosely fitting the discharge-tube F, and is supported by a bent bar, 0, on the upper end of the brace cl, whose lower end is adjustably clamped by a setscrew, 0, in the projecting socket f on the side of the elevator-case. The tubular end and the brace act as a pivot on which the chute turns. The chute G is made in two sections, 9 h, the upper part fitting into the lower part, and clamped therein by a band, i, and set-screw is, so that it can be adjusted to any desirable length. The chute can be made in more than two sections, it necessary.
The elevator-case is provided with a hinged door, I, for giving easy access to the lower part of the elevator.
By loosening the screw is the chute can be made of the desired length, and its angle and height of its outer end can be adjusted by loosening the screw 6, for the purpose of carrying the grain to any portion of the barn in which it is to be stored; or its end can be arranged to throw the grain into a weighing, measuring, or bagging machine, or any receptacle desired.
In the drawings the spout is represented as passing entirely over the thrashing-machine to some point past the latter; but it can also be turned to the opposite side, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, or to anyintermediate point.
This device is made entirely separate from the thrashing-machine, to which it is intended to be fastened by bolts, and is so made that it can be sold separately and attached to any thrashing-machine.
I am aware that thrashing-machines have been provided with chutes for carrying the grain to the upper part of the machine, and. I therefore lay no claim to such invention.
What I claim is- 1. An attachment to a thrashing-machine, consisting of an elevator having at its lower end a mouth for receiving the spout of athrashing-machine, and at its upper end a tube, F, fitting in the neck I) of the chute G, and forming a pivot on which the chute turns, in combination with the neck I), chute G, and adjustable turning-bra'ce d, whereby the said chute can be turned to discharge the grain to any point or into any receptacle on either side of the machine, substantially as described.
2. A grain-elevator provided at its upper end with a pivoted chute adjustable in length, in combination with the adj usting-brace d, supported and turning in the socket f, and the setscrew 6, for governing the height of the chute and securing it laterally, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In combination with a grain-elevatorhaving a tube or spout, F, a chute, Gr, made in two or more sections, one sliding within the other, to vary the length of the chute, and having an adjusting-clamp, i k, constructed to hold the sections in position, and provided at its upper end with a tube or neck, b, to receive the spout In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSIAH HARP.
