Application March 2, 1946, Serial No. .651,510
'I'his invention relates .generally ltoithe clothing art and more `particularly to improvements in shoulder pads `or .sleeve head pads.
In the manufacture `of .coats and jackets, .and similar garments :having a shoulder portion with an armhole opening, .and a l.sleeve connected to the edge of said armhole opening, Apads are fused to soften or increase the radius of the fold .or bend in the fabric as .it leaves the upper .edge portions of the arm hole opening :to fall .downwardly lto .form the sleeve of :the .gannent.
While pads have been used for .this purpose in the past they have been feither .of such Ysoft construction that .they tend to bunch, mat for become lumpy when Worn .or they have .been of a character wherein woven fabric nis used in 4which event they lack the desired softness .and resiliency and the cost thereof :is rela 'velyhigh The soft pads, further, are open to he obiecticnzthat VAey `tend to disintegrate when the `gra-.ienent is subjected to repeated cleaning operations..
It is therefore `among J:the objects of :the present invention to yprovide improved shoulder er sleeve head pads for garments, :composed of :felt
Vproviding the desiree. soitness with adequate stability.
Another object herein lies in the provision of structure vof the ,class described which may be more readily sewn or otherwise attached to "the garment with which it is to be used.
A still further object lies in the provision of shoulder or sleeve head Dads for use with garments in which the use of a bias fabric strip is eliminated.
A feature of the invention lies the fact that the present constructions may ,be utilized with garments of various weights so that., for example, the present pads in ka lighter Weight may be used on womens garments or mens garments made of light weight cloth.
A feature of the invention lies `in the inet that by the use of my improved pad the external appearance .of the shoulder head is enhanced.
Another object herein lies in the provision of structure of the class described in which a minimum of material is used so that the garment is comfortable when worn, l
These'objects and other incidental ends and advantages will more fullyappear inthe progress of this disclosure and be pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 10 is an enlarged vertical sectional View as seen from the plane Ill- Ill on Figure 9.
Turning now to the first embodiment `of the invention illustrated in VFigures 1 to 4 inclusive, the shoulder or sleeve head pad generally indicated by reference character I!! is formed from a single blank II composedof felt. The felt blank II may in turn be composed of an agglomeration of bers having felting characteristics such as cotton or wool or combinations thereof together with such sizing and binding agents as are necessary, such being well known in the felt manufacturing art.
The lblank II is Preferably oblong and includes first and second `lateral edges I2 and I3 and end edges Ill and I5. The blank II has first and vsec-- ond principal surfaces H5 and Il which are preferably substantially smooth. The distance between the first and second lateral edges l2 and i3 is 'governed by the desired distance between the fold edge 2!) and the edge I3 in the finished pad. Disposed at a distance from the lateral edge I2 preferably substantially equal to one third of the distance between the lateral edges I2 and I3 is a fold line I8 and in the fabrication of the pad I Il the blank II is folded Vabout the line I3 and the convex portion of the fold 20 occurring on the surface IB. This folding operation is seen in process in the left portion of Figure 3.. After the s of the garment by fold 20 has been formed the portions 2| and 22 are interconnected by the line of stitches 23 which prevents the portions 2| and 22 from shifting with respect to each other..
The finished pad presents a neat appearance and may be readily secured to the desired portion suitably positioned stitches such as the stitches 25. Depending upon the area in which the greatest amount of padding is desired, the pad may be mounted at the juncture of the arm hole opening of the sleeve head with either the fold edge 20 or the second edge I3 outermost, that is, disposed most distant from the neck opening of the garment.
In the second embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figures 5, 6 and 7, the shoulder or sleeve head pad is generally indicated by reference character I I and is formed from two separate blanks III and |3I. The blanks III and I3! are composed of felt or a collection of fibers having felting characteristics such as cotton or wool or combinations thereof together with such binding, adhering or finishing materials as are necessary, such being well known in the felting art. The blanks III and I3! are preferably oblong, the blank I3I being of lesser width than the blank I I I, The blank I I I has first and second principal surfaces IIe` and II'I which are preferably substantially smooth. The distance between the first and second lateral edges |I2 and II3 is governed by the desired distance between the fold edge |23 and the lateral edge I I3 in the finished pad. Disposed at a distance from the lateral edge I i2, preferably substantially equal to one third of the distance between the lateral edges I|2 and I|3 is a fold line IIB and in the fabrication of the pad I|0 the blank III is folded about the line IIS, the convex portion of the fold |29 occurring on the surface IIB. The blank |3| has iirst and second principal surfaces |36 and |31 which are preferably smooth. The distance between the first and Second lateral edges I32 and |33 is governed generally by the distance between the fold edge |29 of the blank III and the lateral edge II2, said blank I3| being substantially twice that distance in width. The blank I3| has a fold line |33 which longitudinally bisects the said blank and is adapted to become aligned with the fold line IIS when the blanks I3| and III are placed together.
In assembling the blanks I I I and I3 the blank I3| may be placed upon the blank III with the edge |32 in alignment with the edge I I2. The two blanks are then simultaneously folded along the respective fold lines |38 and IIB and in such folded condition are secured by a row of stitches |23 which extends through the four laminations thereby formed.
In the second embodiment there are thus four layers of material along one longitudinal area of the device and only a single thickness of the material extending along a laterally adjacent area. This is seen, for example, in Figure 7. By this construction accentuated thickness and weight are provided in one longitudinal area. The thickened area is formed by a plurality of laminations which may shift slightly with respect to each other in conforming the pad III) to the desired curvature and yet the parts are prevented from an undue amount of displacement by the stitching |23.
Turning now to the third embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figures 8 to 10 inclusive, the shoulder or sleeve head pad is generally indicated by reference character 2li) and is formed from two separate blanks 2II and 23|. The
` desired width of the finished .4 blanks 2II and 23| are composed of felt or similar non-woven material in which the fibers are interconnected. The blanks 2| I and 23| are preferably oblong and of substantially the same size. The blank 2| I has rst and second principal surfaces 2 I6 and 2 I 1 while the blank 23| has rst and second principal surfaces 236 and 23T. Each of the blanks is of a width substantially 50% greater than the total width of the finished article, and each of said blanks has a fold line, said lines being indicated by reference characters 2I8 and 238. The distances between said fold lines and the edges 2I3 and 233 are substantially equal to the article.
In fabricating the finished device, the blank 23| is placed upon the blank ZII and the both of them are simultaneously folded about the lines 238 and 2 I 8, the fold being secured in place by the rows of stitches 223 and 253.
The third embodiment of the invention differs from the second embodiment principally in the fact that the relatively thinner area of the device 2li) contains two plies of material. This portion is indicated by reference character 25| onFigure 10. Further, in the third form, undesired displacement of the laminations forming the heavier portion 25|] is prevented by the stitches 223 and 253.
It may thus be seen that I have provided novel and useful shoulder and sleeve head pady constructions which may be economically and rapidly fabricated and which are easily adapted and secured in place upon the garment portions with which they are associated. As is well known in the art to which the present invention relates my improved pads may be shifted about in position with respect to the garment to produce the desired bulk or softness in predetermined areas of the garment. By virtue of the fact that the material of which my pads are composed is felt or material of substantially similar nature, the pads are'prevented from undesirably bunching, matting or shifting in position and the installation stitching may be easily and securely put in place.
I wish it to be understood that I do notA desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
