B. R. KREKDER WIPINC: DEVICE FOR OIL GAUGE RODS Filed March 13, 1947 INVENTOR. I B. R. .KREIDER BY, "wggww/fww ATTORNEYS i atented Apr. 6, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WIPIN G DEVICE FOR OIL GAUGE RODS Beniamin R. Kreider, Manheim, Pa.
Application March 13, 1947, Serial No. 734,519
4 Claims. 1
This invention relates to a device for wiping oil from a, conventional oil gauge rod such as used in standard makes of automobiles for testing the oil level in an engine crank case.
Ordinarily such oil gauges are withdrawn and the oil level read from the indicia on the rod, and if a further check is desired the oil is wiped from the gauge by the attendant on a rag or piece of waste and the gauge reinserted in the slot provided for that purpose in the engine crank case. Where no rag or waste is available various other expedients are resorted to and the oil gauge rod is not always cleaned in a proper manner before reinsertion into the crank case.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple device which may either be carried by the attendant in a pocket or attached to some suitable support adjacent the oil tank so as to be readily accessible and which will efficiently wipe the oil gauge rod and accumulate the oil removed from the gauge rod permitting the salvaging of this oil if desired.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
One sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof, in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing its hinged lid slightly open;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the device showing the hinged lid removed;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical cross section taken on line 33 of Figure 2, but showing the lid in closed position; and
Figure 4 is a transverse cross section taken on line, 44 of Figure 3. t
In accordance with the present invention an elongated receptacle l is provided herein illustrated as of rectangular form. This container is preferably of a length substantially greater than the normal length of that portion of an oil gauge rod which is usually immersed in oil when in position in a crank case. One end of this container l is provided with a V-shaped notch 8 and to the opposite end of the container l is hingedly secured a lid 2 having a flange l3.
n the interior side walls of the container l and adjacent their upper edges are provided supporting beads 44 upon which is suspended a support including a perforated bottom 1, said support being of a general U-shape in cross section having inclined side walls 6, the upper edges and position the oil gauge rod covered with oil with the oil coated portion extending beyond the inner edge of the fibrous wiper 9, and then draw the rod outwardly through the notch. ll, completely wiping the gauge of its oil which will gravitate to the bottom of the supporting device 5 and through the perforations l2 in said bottom into the bottom of the container I from which it may be periodically removed.
If desired, the container I may be attached by a suitable bracket to any supporting structure in the vicinity of the oil tank.
Various modifications in the shape of the container will suggest themselves for the convenience of particular locations, but within the scope of the present invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:
1. Oil gauge wiper comprising an elongated container of a length greater than the length of an oil gauge normally wetted by maximum immersion into a full tank case,.said. container having a V-notch at one end, a false perforated bottom coextensive with the container said false bottom supported by diverging side walls supported from the walls of the container, and a fibrous wiper folded into substantially V-cross section supported over the false bottom and between said divergent walls at the notched end of the container.
2. Device of claim 1 in which the fibrous wiper is of less length than the container.
3. Oil gauge wiper comprising an elongated rectangular container having one end notched downwardly from its free edge and a hinged top, a fibrous wiping element bent longitudinally to form a V-groove and means for suspending the wiping element adjacent and with its groove in alignment with the notch in the end wall of the container, abovethe bottom of the container.
4. Oil gauge wiper comprising an elongated container having one end notched downwardly from its free edge and a closure having a part adapted to cover said notch, a fibrous wiping element bent upon a longitudinal line to form a REFERENCES CITED vand means for sustaining th wiping The following references are of record in the element in the container adjacent and with its file Of this Patent! groove in alignment with the notch in the end 5 UNI Wall of the container above the bottom of the TED STATES PATENTS containen Number Name Date 1, 1,07 Zihlman Mar. 13, 1934
