(01. 1-46) The present invention relates to nailin Particularly to an improved nail structure and to a magazine type nailing device therefor, wherein a quantity of the nails are carried and are adapted to be successively fed and individually driven through the operation of the device.
It is an object of the invention to provide a nail structure, preferably of sheet metal, and comprising 9, prong part and a head part, both disposed'in co-planar relation in their form as contained in the nailing device prior to being driven into the material to be nailed, the nail structure having a. bending line between its two parts, whereby, following the driving of the prong part into the material, the head part is adapted through the driving operation to be bent at a right angle to the driven prong part, thus providing a flat head engaged upon the surface of the material.
It is a further object to provide such nail structure which will permit a relatively large number of the nails to be adhesively connected in a strip or block with their side surfaces contacting each other and theirtop end edge surfaces exposed, and whereby the foremost nail'in the strip or block may be disengaged therefrom and driven through pressure applied against the top edge thereof, such pressure being exerted by a driver which simultaneously drives the prong part of the nail into the material and bends the head part.
A further object is to provide a nail structure wherein shoulder means is provided at the lower edge of the head part, contiguous to the top of the prong part, and substantially in line with the bending line between the head and prong parts for the purpose of limiting the penetration of the material to the prong part, so that the head part is prevented from entering the material.
A further object is to provide a nailing device including guide means for the nail being driven, operative during penetration of the prong part into the material to maintain the head part in unbent relation and in the vertical plane of the pront part, and releasing means, operative at the completion of thedriving of the prong part into the material for permitting the driving force of the driver to exert a component force upon the head part to bend it at right angles to the prong part and into contact with the surface of the material.
A further object is to provide a nailing device having abutment means for cooperation with the shoulder means of the nail, for the purpose of efiectually limiting the insertion of the prong part into the material.
2 Another object is to provide driving means adapted during the driving operation to create a tipping moment in the head part of the nail to cause it to bend at a right angle to the prong part along the bending line while remaining. flat, so that the bent head of the driven nail engages in flat relation upon the surface of the material.
With the above and other objects in view embodiments of theinvention are shown in the accompanying drawings, and these embodiments will be hereinafter more fully described with reference thereto, and the invention will be finally pointed out in the claims.

This arrangement is especially adapted for cooperation with abutment means provided in the nailing device, presently to be more fully described, whereby such abutment means engages the shoulders |2-l2 to limit the penetration of the prong into the material andtherefore allows the head to bend into engagement with the surface of the material, at the same time disengaging the shoulders from the abutment means and bringing the fiat surface of the head into fiat contact with the surface 01' the material.
The nailing device, for cooperation with the nail as shown in Figs. 1 to 4, comprises a magazine l4 having a horizontally extending passage 15 therethrough corresponding in cross-sectional shape to the outline of the'nail and adapted to receive a strip or block of the nails adhesively connected together. formed by spacer strips 2|2|, disposed in spaced parallel relation to each other upon the forward end of the frame adjacent each of its vertical side edges, the lateral spacing of these strips corresponding to the width of the nail head and the thickness of the strips corresponding to the thickness of the sheet metal material of which the nails are formed, there being sulficientclearance to allow driving movement of the nail in the space provided by the strips. Upon the strips 2| there are secured by screws 22 retaining strips 22 somewhat wider along their major length than the strips 2|, having their outer edges flush with the outer edges of the strips 2| and their inner edges projected inwardly with respect to the inner edges of the strips 2| so that these strips 22 provide retaining flanges projecting over the margins of the nail heads. The
space between these retaining flanges is slightly greater than the width of the upper wide end of the prong part of the nail, so that while they confine the head partof the nail at each side, they do not contact the prong part. The retaining flanges terminate in spaced' relation above the lower end of the driving passage a distance corresponding to the height of the head part of the nail, so that a free ness of the sheet metal material of the nail and their lateral spacing being slightly greater than the wide upper end of the prong part of the nail so that this prong part will engage between them. The upper surfaces of the. abutments are inclined downwardly andinwardly. to conform to the angular shoulders |2-|2, and so that as the nail is driven and its, shoulders come into contact with the abutments the wedging effect of the abutments on the shoulders incooperation with the forward free space 23, will resolve itself into a forward bending moment upon the head'of the nail to start its bending forwardly about the bending line H. The lower corners of the driving strip 25 are cut out, as at 3l'3'l, to clear the abutment projections 24, so that the effectual driving force of the driver may be extended below the abutment projections to firmly impact the head part of the nail against the material being nailed.
As shown in Fig. 23 the driving strip 25 may have a relatively sharp fin or tooth 25'- at its rearward edge sufiiciently thin so that it engages behind the edge of the nail head to insure its forward bending as the head is released from the retaining strips 22. To facilitate this action the edge of the nail head may be slightly beveled at its rearward side, as at I".
To the upper end of the driving member 21 there is secured a. plunger 29 slideably engaged through an apertured top plate 30 secured by screws 30 to the upper ends of the vertical driver supporting parts 16 of the magazine, this plunger having a helical compression spring 3| engaged about it between the plate 30 and a head 32, which normally exerts upward force upon the driving member to retain it in its upper position. A shoulder 33 on the plunger is adapted to engage the top plate 29 in the depressed position of the driving member to limit its downward movement.
Within the magazine passage I there is slideably engaged a push shoe 34 normally pressed forwardly by means of a spring 35 to exert forward pressure upon the strip or block of nails, and adapted to be retracted for the purpose of refilling the magazine with nails by means of a handle 36.
In operation, the nails are inserted in the nailing device in the form of a strip or block wherein the individual nails are preferably adhesively connected together by a suitable adhesive substance which permits the ready separation of the foremost nail of the strip by pressure applied against an edge thereof. The foremost nail of the strip is pressed against the flange projections of the retaining strips 22 and into vertical alignment with the driving strip 25 through the forward pressure of the push shoe, and is adapted to be driven into the material to be nailed by depressing the driving strip through pressure applied to the plunger 29. During the initial driving movement the head part of the nail is supported by the retaining flanges of the strips 22 as the prong part is driven into the material, the vnail being held against bending through the fact that the head part of the nail is retained by the flanges. While the pointed prong part is not retained forwardly its inherent shape is such that it will drive into the material without bending, the sharply pointed end entering the material with relatively little pressure, while the length of the prong part disposed above the material gradually increases in width as it decreases in length, so that the resistance to bending is proportionately increased with the increased resistance to penetration of the widening upper part of the prong. In practice, it is found that with this shape prong the nail will penetrate wood or other relatively hard material without bending between its ends.
The penetration of the nail is limited by engagement of the shoulders 12 with the abutment projections 24, and at this point the ham part moves into the forwardly clear opening 23 out of engagement with the retaining flanges of the 6 strips 22. As the rearward surface of the head part of the nail is supported by'the forward surface of the bearing plate II, the downward pressure of the driver causes the head part of the nail to bend forwardly about its bending line It, the grooved depression forming it being disposed in the forward side of the nail so that the downward pressure of the driver tends to force the head part forwardly rather than to bend or buckle it between its lower and upper ends. As soon as the head part starts to bend forwardly about the bending line its upper edge rides forwardly upon the flat lower surface of the driver and is finally pressed into flat engagement with the surface of the material being nailed, the bending of the head part causing the shoulders l2 to swing forwardly of the abutment projections 24 so that they are clear of the projections and therefore engage flatly against the surface of the material. The inward and downward inclination of the abutment projections 24 is such that upon engagement of the inclined shoulder surfaces 12 therewith a slight wedging effect takes place which resolves itself into a forward bending moment in the nail head to thereby further insure its forward bending about the bending line l3. Upon release of the driver it retracts to its upper position and another nail of the strip moves into place in the driving passage.
In Figs. 10 to 14 there is shown a modified form of nail according to the invention wherein the head part 10 is provided with V-shaped notches 3838 in its side edges providing a weakened area constituting a bending line substantially midway between its upper and lower edges. It will be understood that instead of the notch'es a suitable score line may be provided in the rearward side of the head to produce a weakened bending area across its medial line. This form of the head is adapted during the driving operation to fold upon itself, as shown in Fig. 12, at the completion of the penetration of the prong part of the nail, thus providing a double thick, ness head. The nail is adapted to be driven in the same driving device as shown in Figs. 13 and l i, the upper edge of the head remaining in engagement with the lower end of the driving strip 25, so that the head bends forwardly in line with the notches 38 at the completion of the penetration of the prong part, the folded head being flattened against the nailed material through impact of the driver at the completion of its downward movement.
In Figs. 15 to 19 there is shown another modifled form of nail according to the invention, in which the head It is provided with notches 39 disposed at a point near the shoulders 12 substantially one-third the height of the head. In this case the folded head projects both forwardly and rearwardly of the driven prong part. It is adapted to be driven in the same driving device, as shown in Figs. 5 to 9, the upper edge of the nail head as it is driven to its fiat position moving the driving device rearwardly, as shown in Figs. 18 and 19, following the driving of the prong part, so that at the completion of the driving operation the driver is impacted against the folded head part forwardly and rearwardly of the driven prong part.
In Figs. 20 to 22 there are shown further modified forms of nails according to the invention, as well as modifications in the abutment projections 24 of the nailing device to accommodate these modified forms of nails.

The nailing device according to the invention may be incorporated in any suitable type of magazine structure having a reciprocating driver. For instance, it might be incorporated in a ower-operated device, as well as in a hammer-like device. This latter type usually includes a. weight movably carried in of the weight to the handle being such that as the handle is raised the weight slides upwardly. As the handle is brought down during the hammering operation the weight is thrown against the driver causing it to drive the nail. This type of device is well-known in the art so that no further description and illustration thereof is deemed necessary, it being pointed out that according to the invention the known type adapted to the specific nail a guide channel above the an medge an abutment shoulder forming an" angular corner with said inwardly oflset side edge of said prong part, the straight transverse line of said prong part coinciding with said angular corner constituting the bending line between said head and prong parts, said shoulder adapted in the co-planar relation of said head and prong parts to limit the insertion of the prong part in material being nailed to the full length of said prong part, the marginal portion of said head part between its, upper edgesand said shoulder being a guide portion for engagement with guide means of a driving implement said head part being bendable with respect to the fully driven prong part about said bending line into angular relation to part to dispose said head part in engagement with the surface of the material being nailed.

I have illustrated and described preferred and satisfactory embodlments of the invention, but it will be understood that changes may be made therein, within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.

A nail structure comprising a head part and a prong part integrally connected along a straight transverse bending line, said head and prong parts in their pre-driven state being disposed in coplanar relation with their front and rear surfaces in the same plane and being entirely freeof any projections beyond said surfaces, whereby the rear surface of the head and prong parts may have downward sliding engagement with the front surface of a similar contiguous nail structure disposed in a driving implement, said head part having at its upper-edge a driver engaging surface for driving engagement by the driver of a driving implement andhaving at its lower edge an abutment shoulder inclined downwardly to apoint of coincidence with said transverse bending line for engagement with stop means of a driving implement and adapted in the co-planar relation of said head and prong parts to limit the insertion of the prong part in material being nailed to the full length of said prong part, the marginal portion of said head part between its upper edge and said shoulder being a guide portion for enco-planar relation with their front and rear surfaces in the same plane and being entirely free of any projections beyond said surfaces, whereby the rear surface of the head'and prong parts may have downward sliding engagement with the front surface of a similar contiguous nail structure disposed in a driving implement, said prong part being in the form of a single centrally disposed prong having its side edges convergingly inclined downwardly to a pointand entirely inwardly oilset from and belowthe side edges of said head part, and said head .part having at its upper edge a driver engaging surface for driving engagement by the driver of a driving ime plement and having at its lower edge abutment shoulders at each side of said prong part adapted in the co-planar relation of said head and prong parts to limit the insertion of the prong part in material being nailed to the full lenBth of said prong part, the marginal portions of said head part between its upper edge and said shoulders being guide portions for engagement with guide means of a driving implement said head part being bendable with respect to the fully driven prong part about said bending line into angular relation to said prong part to dispose said head part in engagement with the surface of the material being nailed.

A nail structure comprising a head part and a prong part integrally connected along a straight transverse bending line, said head and prong parts in their pre-driven state being disposed in coplanar relation with their front and rear surfaces in the same plane and being entirely free of any projections beyond said surfaces, whereby the rear surface of the head and prong parts may have downward sliding engagement with the front surface of a similar contiguous nail structure disposed in a driving implement, said prong part being in the form of a single centrally disposed prong having its side edges convergingly'inclined downwardly to a point and entirely inwardly offset from and below the side edges of said head part, and said head part having at its upper edge a driver engaging surface for driving engagement by the driver of a driving implement and having at its lower edge abutment shoulders at each side of said prong inclined downwardly and inwardly to points of coincidence with the ends of said transverse bending line for engagement with stop means of a driving implement, and adapted in the co-planar relation of said head and prong parts to limit the insertion of the prong part in material being nailed to the full length of saidprong part, the marginal portions of said head part between its upper edge and said with guide means of a driving implement said head part being bendable with respect to the fully driven prong part about said bending line into angular relation to said prong part to dispose said head part in engagement with the surface of the material being nailed. A nail structure comprising a head part and a prong part integrally connected along a transshoulders being guide portions for engagement in their pre-driven state being disposed in co-Q planar relation. said prong part being-in the form of a plurality of spaced prongs, and'said head part having abutment shoulder means at its lower edge between the upper ends of said prongs adapted to limit the insertion of.the prong part in material being'nailed, said head part being bendable with respect to said prong part about said bending line into angular relation to said head part to dispose said head part in engagement with the surface of the material being nailed.

A nail structure comprising a head part and a prong part integrally connected along a transverse bending line, said head and prong parts in their pre-driven state being disposed in co-planar relation, said prong part being in the form of a centrally disposed prong having its side edges convergingly inclined downwardly to a point and substantially shorter prongs outwardly spaced therefrom at each side, and said head part having abutment shoulders at its lower edge between said central prong and said outwardly spaced shorter prongs adapted to limit the insertion of the prong part in material being nailed, said head part being bendable with respect to said prong part about said bending line into angular relation to said prong part to dispose said head part in engagement with the surface of the material being nailed.

A nail structure comprising a head part and a prong part integrally connected along a transverse bending line, said head and prong parts in their pre-driven state being disposed in co-planar relation, said head part having an abutment shoulder at its lower edge adapted to limit the insertion of the prong part in material being nailed, said head part being bendable with respect to said prong part about said bending line to dispose said head part in engagement with the surface of the material being nailed, and said head part being foldable upon itself about a transverse weakened bending line intermediate its upper and lower edges.
9 A nail structure comprising a head part and a prong part integrally connected along a transverse bending line, said head and prong parts in their pre-driven state being disposed in co-planar relation, said head part having an abutment shoulder at its lower edge adapted to limit the insertion of the prong part in material being nailed, said head part being bendable with respect to said prong part about said bending line to dispose said head part in engagement with the surface of the material being nailed, and said head part being foldable upon itself about a transverse weakened bending line midway its upper and lower edges.
10.- A nail structure comprising a head part and a prong part integrally connected along a transverse bending line, said head and prong parts in their pre-driven state being disposed in coplanar relation, said head part-having an abutment shoulder at its lower edge adapted to limit" the insertion of the prong part in material being nailed, said head part being bendable with respect to said prong part about said bending linesheaves taining flange means disposed at and constitut-V ing the forward .side of theupper part of said passage means, said nail adapted to be enga ed in said passage with its side marginal portions forwardly engaged by said retaining flange means, said retaining flange means terminating at a point spaced above the base of said passage means a distance at least equal to the height of the head part of said nail to provide at the lower part a free spacefor the forward bending of said head part from said passage means as it is driven downwardly in said passage below said retaining flange means, a driver engaged in said 'passage means for vertical driving movement therein includinga lower driving surface adapted to engage the upper edge of the head part of said nail during driving of the prong part into material being nailed and abending surface adapted to be wardly and inwardly to points coincident with said bending line, nail driving passage-means slidably engaged by the upper edge of said head part as it is bent forwardly about its bending line in said free space and further to impact the bent head part against the surface of the material being nailed.

In a nailing device, for driving andbending a nail member including an upp r head part and a lower prong part disposed in co-planar relation and integrally connected along a transverse bending line, and wherein said head part has abutment shoulder means at its lower edge, nail driving passage-means adapted to receive said nail for vertical driving movement therein, retaining flange means constituting the forward side of said passage means and terminating at a point spaced above the base of said passage means a distance at least equal to the height of the head part of said nail to provide'a free space for the forward bending of said head part from'said passage means, a driver engaged in said passage means forvertical driving movement therein including a lower driving surface adapted to engage the upperedge of the head part of said nail during driving of the prong part into material being nailed and a bending surface adapted to be slidablyengaged by the upper edge of said head part as ity is bent forwardly aboutits bending line in-said free space and further to impact the bent head part against the surface of the material being nailed, and abutment projection means at the lower end of said passage arranged to engage said abutment shoulder means of said nail to limit the penetration of the prong part into the material being nailed.

In a nailing device. for driving and bending a nail member including an upper head part and a lower prong part disposed in co-planar re lation and integrally connected by a transverse bending 1ine, and wherein saidhead part has abutment shoulder means at its lower, edge inclined downwardly to a point coincident with said bending line, nail driving passagemeans adapted I to receive said nail for vertical driving movement therein, retaining flange means-constituting the forward side of said passage means and terminating at a point spaced above the base of said passage means a distance at least equal to the height 2 p v of the head part of, said nail to provide a free space for theforward bending of said head part from said passage means, a driver engaged in said passage means for vertical, driving movement therein'including a lower driving surface adapted t engage the upper edge of the head part of "said I 1 nail during driving of the prong part into material being nailed and a bending surface adapt- ,ed .to be slidably engaged by the upper edge of said head part as it is bent forwardly about its bending line in'said free space and further to impact the bent-head part againstv the surface of the material beingrnailed, and abutment projected means at the lower end of said passage having a downwardly inclined upper surface arranged to engage said inclined abutment shoulder means of said nail to limit the penetration of the prong part into the material being nailed. 14. In a nailing device, for driving and bending a nail member including an upper head part and a lower relatively narrower central prong part disposed inco-planar relation and integrally connected by a transverse bending line, and wherein said head part has abutment shoulders at its lower edge at each side of said prong part inclined downadapted to receive said nail for vertical driving movement therein, retaining flange means constituting the forward side of said passage means and terminatingat a point spaced above the base of-sald passage means a distance at least equal to the height of the head part of said nail to provide afree space for the forward bending of said head part from said passage means, a driver engaged in said therein to engage the upper edge of the head part of said nail during driving of the pron part intomaterial being nailed and a bending surface adapted to be slidably engaged by the upper edge of said head part as it is bent forwardly about its bending line in said free space and further to impact the'bent head part against the surface of 7 the material being nailed, and spaced abutment proje tion means at the lower end of said passage each having a downwardlyv and inwardly inclined upper surface arranged to engage the respective abutment shoulders of said nail at each side of. said prong part to limit the penetration of the"- prong part into the material being nailed.
15. In a nailing device, for v driving and bending a nail member including an upper head part and a lower prong part disposed in co-planar relation and'integrally connected along a transverse bending line, and wherein said head part has abutment shoulder means at itslower edge,
nail driving passage means adapted to receive said nail for vertical driving movement therein, retaining flange means disposed at and constituting the forward side of the upper part of said passage means, said nail adapted to be engaged in said passage with its side marginal portions forwardly engaged by said retaining flange means,
said retaining flange means terminating at apoint spaced above the base of said passage means a distance at least equal to the height of the head part'of said nail to provide at the lower part a freev space for the forward bending of said head part from said passage means as it is driven downwardly in said passage below said retaining flange means, adriver engaged in said passage means for vertical drivingmovement therein including a lower driving surface adapted to engage the upper edge of the head part of said nail'during age means for vertical driving movement eluding a lower driving surface adapted a 13 e! the prom pert lute materlel helm! and a bending shrine of flat term 6 1- l at a right angle to the direction of eald passage means adapwd to be slldably engaged by the upedge 0! said head part as it is bent torwardly about its bending line in add free space and further $0 impact the bent head part in flat relation against the upper surtaee o! the material being MAX VOGEL.
