Application February 27, 1947,'Sial'No. 731,171
(Cl. 12`8-233l 4 Claims. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in amedicine dropp'er.
This application is a substituteo'f my application led on February 5, 1944, Serial Number 521,169, now abandoned.
lsf/lore specifically, the invention proposes the construction ofV a medicine fdropper having a, resilient bulbior drawing 'and forcing liquid in and out and which is provided with afsmall resilient auxiliary bulb extension arrangedina manner to permit a measuredquantity'of medicineor other liquid to be delivered from the bulb when the small resilient `auxiliary bulb is compressed.
A further object of the invention proposes forming the bulbs as an-integr'al unitto permit a big bulb to be pressed fo'rlling the -dropper, after which the small bulb may be used to deliver the measured quantity of liquid.
Still another object of the invention proposes the provision of a tubular glass extension mounted upon the large resilient bulb for conveying the liquid to and from the bulbs.
Still another object of the invention proposes the provision of a means upon the auxiliary bulb extension which may be used for limiting the amount of liquid which will be -delivered by the dropper each time the auxiliary bulb extension is compressed.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part oi this disclosure- Fig. 1 isa perspective view of a medicine dropper constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional View taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective vieW of a medicine dropper constructed in accordance with a modification of this invention.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged partial vertical sectional view taken on the line 4-,4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional View taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
The medicine dropper, according to this invention, includes a. resilient bulb I0. This resilient bulb I0 is formed of rubber or other similar Inaterial and is provided with an opening having a beaded edge Il which is disposed in a complementary recess I2 formed in one end 0f a tubular,
. 2 glass member I3, The `tubular glass member If3 is provided for conveying a liquid to and from the ilteOrOf the resilient bulb l"l 0.
At 'a pointdisposed opposite the tubular glass 'member 'I3 the bulb i0 is provided'witha. small resilient auxiliary blllb.eXle1"Sln M lWlilC'll vlnlay be used for dispensing one drop iat'a time, liquid contained vwithin :the large bulb lil. lThis bulb extension I4 is also formed'df 'rubber *orlother similar 1material vand Lis "integrally formed 'with the large bulbv I (I.
The manner of using the medicine droppen in accordance "with -this yform of the invention, is as follows: v
The end of thetubular'gla'ss member v=I3`is`i`n serted-into a vessel containinglthe'des'ired medlcineor liquid 'andthe large -bulb Il) :is manually compressed :to draw a portion 'of 1.the liquid iiito the large bulb I through the tubular glass member I3. The small bulb extension I4 is designed to expel one measured drop at each pressure. One advantage of this dropper is that any prescribed number of drops may be administered without the use of electric light. If it is desired to force three drops of the liquid contained Within the large bulb I0 from the dropper it is merely necessary to compress the bulb extension I4 three times to force the air therefrom and cause three drops of liquid contained within the bulb IB to be displaced and discharge through the tubular glass member I3. The three drop example is merely for the purpose of illustration, and the bulb extension I4 might be of design to have any desired capacity.
In the modication of the invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the resilient auxiliary bulb extension I4' is provided with a means for limiting the amount the auxiliary bulb extension may be compressed to control the quantity of liquid which will be displaced therefrom. In this form of the invention a collar I5 is iixedly mounted Within the bulb extension I 4 and slidably supports a second tubular collar IB. 'I'he end of the tubular collar I6 is provided with a spider I'I. A shaft I 8 extends from the spider I'I and slidably passes through an extension I9 formed on the auxiliary bulb I4. The outer end of the shaft |-8 is provided with a knob 20 which may be pulled outwards to draw on the shaft I8 and move the tubular collar I6 into an extended position with relation to the collar I5.
Normally, the tubular collar I5 will be in a retracted position shown in Fig. 4, permitting the extension I4 to be easily compressed to displace the liquid capacity thereof. However, when the Y* 3 tubular collar I6 is in its extended position it will act to limit the degree to which the bulb I4' may be compressed and thus limit the amount of liquid it will dispense when compressed. In other respects this form of the invention is similar .to that previously shown and like reference numerals identify like parts in each of the several vlews.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modications coming within the scope of the invention as dened in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, .what IV claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
4 thereby, comprising a spider mounted across the outer end of said second collar, a shaft extending from said spider and slidably extended through an opposed wall of said bulb extension to be manually pulled out and pushed in to extend and retract said second collar.
3. A medicine dropper comprising a resilient bulb for drawing and forcing liquid in and out, a small resilient auxiliary bulb extension on said bulb for dispensing a small quantity of said liquid, a collar xedly mounted within said small extension, a second collar slidably extendedrinto said collar, and means for extending said second collar from said ilrst collar to limit the amount the 1. A medicine dropper comprising aV resilientV rbulb for drawing and forcing liquid inrand out,
a small resilient auxiliary bulb extension on said bulb for dispensing a small quantity of said liquid, a collar fixedly mounted within said small extension, a second collar slidably extended into said collar, and means for extending said second collar from said first collar to limit the amount the bulb extension may be compressed to control the amount of liquid which will be displaced bulb extension may be compressed to control the amount of liquid which will be displaced thereby, comprising a spider mounted across the outer end of said second collar, `a shaft extending from said spider and slidably extended through an opposed wall of said bulb extension to be manually pulled out and pushed in to extend and retract said second collar, and a knob mounted on the outer endof said shaft by which it may be conveniently gripped to be pushed and pulled.v
4. A medicine dropper comprising a resilient bulb for drawing and forcing liquid in and out, a small resilient auxiliary bulb extension on said bulb for dispensing a small quantity of said liquid, a collar flxedly mounted within said small extension, arsecond collar slidably extended into said collar, and means for extending said second collar from said first collar to limit the amount the bulb extension may be compressed to control the amount of liquid which will be displaced thereby, and means for limitingY complete disengagement of said collars.
