UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICEO CHARLES L. WORK, OF FBEELAND, OHIO.
ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,823, dated July 5, 1881.
Application filed October 29, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES L. WORK, of Freeland, Muskingum county, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Engines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to increase the pressure between the steam-cylinders and driving-shaft.
The invention consists of a combined steam and hydraulic engine composed of two hydraulic cylinders connected with each other by suitable pipes and placed between a steamengine and adriven shaft, one of the said cylinders being of twice the length and half the circumference of the other, the piston of the smaller or longer cylinder being moved by the piston-rod of the steam-cylinder, and the piston of the larger or shorter cylinder being connected with the driven shaft.
The drawing represents a sectional side elevation of the hydraulic cylinder and some of its connections.
In the drawing, A B represent respectively two hydraulic cylinders, set one above the other or in the same horizontal plane, and connected with each other at their opposite ends bysuitable pipes, to b, the capacity of each equaling that of the cylinder A.
The cylinder A is designed to be twice as long as and half the diameter of the cylinder B.
The piston O of the cylinder A is designed to be connected by its rod 0 with the piston K of a steam-engine, and the piston D of the cylinder B is connected by its rod D with a sliding cross-head, E, whose motion is transmitted to the driven shaft F through connectin g-rod and crank G. H represents the driven wheel carried by the shaft F.
It is a well-known principle in hydrostatios (No model.)
that pressure brought to bear on any part of a body of water in confinement is communicated undiminished to all parts of the vessel alike;
hence, supposing that by means ofa steam-' engine fifty pounds pressure is communicated to the piston 0 when the cylinders A B are properly supplied with water, then, on the principle above mentioned, the fifty pounds pressure on the piston 0 becomes one hundred pounds pressure on the piston D, which one hundred pounds pressure, less the ordinary loss by the friction of the moving parts, is transmitted to the driven shaft F.
By this apparatus itis proposed to increase the pressing force of a steam-engine in transmitting power.
When the pistonG is moved the full length of the cylinder A the result is the moving of the piston D the full'length of the cylinder B, but with twice the pressure, accordingto wellknown principles in hydraulics.
The cylinders A B are designed to be supplied with suitable arrangements by which the waste water can be resupplied thereto, and to be provided with other necessary valves, ports, and cooks, which, however, are not shown in the drawing, as they constitute no part of my invention, being old and well-known devices.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the steam-piston K and driven shaft F, of the hydraulic cylinder A B, provided with pistons O D, respectively, constructed and arranged substantially as herein shown and described.
CHAS. L. WORK.
