UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES P. BUSFIELD, OF HAVERHILL, MASSACHUSETTS.
SEWING AND PEGGING JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,755, dated July 5, 1881.
' Application filed April 11, 1881. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES P. BUsFIELn, of Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing and PeggingJacks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in jacks used for sewing and pegging shoes in which great simplicity of construction is combined with quickness of action and great power of holding the last in position when being operated upon.
The invention consists in jacking the shoe by means of a cam arranged on the under side of the top plate of the jack, incombination with the heel-piece, which latter projects downward through the top plate and bears against the cam, so that when the latter is fixed in position the last will be quickly and firmly jacked by a slight turn of the upper plate. The said cam is held in a fixed position by means of a toothed wheel attached to or made a part of the under side of the cam, a spring-bolt engaging with the said rack and operated by a cam-lever attached to the under side of the middle plate. The said cam-lever is capable ofbeingfastened when the spring-bolt is drawn hack free from the toothed wheel, so as to admit of a free rotation of the upper plate carrying the toe and heel piece when necessary.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a top or plan view of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 3 y of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line a: w of Fig. 2, looking upward. Fig. 4 is a top view of the middle plate or section of the machine, the plate or section, A, being removed. Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of the locking device or cam-lever, shown in two positions.
The apparatus is composed of three circular sections or plates, the upper section, A, having a downwardly-projectin g rim resting upon an upwardly-projecting rim on the middle section, H,'which latter is supported upon the upwardly-projectin grim of the lower section ,0
To the top of the upper section or plate, A, is attached the toetpiece B, fitted adjustably in the toe-piece holder 0; and D is the pivoted heel piece or support.
All the above parts are old and well known, and do not constitute any part of my invention, and consequently require no further particular description.
The heel-piece D extends downward through the plate A to a point, e; and d is a spring attached to the under side of plate A, and, bearing against the rear of the projection e of the heel-piece, serves to hold the latter in an upright position.
The section or plate A is attached to the section H by means of a center bolt, E, so as to allow free rotation of the plate A.
Fitting loosely on a hub, l, on the under side of section or plate A is a cam, F, (shown in Fig. 3,) against the edge of which bears the projection e of the heel-piece D, and on the under side of the cam F is atoothed wheel, G, forming'a part of said cam. The cam and rack are supported on a hub of plate H.
Onthe upper side of the middle plate, H, is a spring-bolt, I, supported in the two lugs K K, the spring being so arranged as to force the bolt I forward to engage with the toothed wheel G. The withdrawal of the bolt I from engagement with the toothed wheel G is effected by means of what I term a cam-lever, consisting of an arm or lever, L, pivoted at a point, p, on the under side of the central plate, H, and provided with an inclined slot, 8, having a notch, s, at its outer end. The outer end, z, of the bolt I projects downward at a right angle, as shown in Fig. 1, and passes through the slot 8 in the arm L, as seen in Figs. 4 and 5. When the bolt I engages with the toothed wheel G the projection z is in the lower end of the slots, as shown in Fig. 4, and in full lines in Fig. 5. When it is desirable to withdraw the bolt I from engagement with the toothed wheel G the arm or cam-lever L is moved to the position shownin dottedlines in Fig. 5,'which causes the bolt to be drawn back, and the projection i, dropping into the notch s, is held there until'it is again desirable to release the bolt 1, to allow it to engage again with the toothed wheel G, which is effected by pushing the end h of arm L to disengage the projection i from the notch s, the bolt I being retracted by its spring.
In operation, the shoe and last being properly supported on the toe and heel pieces B D, and the spring-pin I being drawn out of contact with the circular toothed wheel G, the plate or section A is rotated until the cam F is brought to bear against the projection e of the heel-piece D, so that the shoe is properly jacked. When the operation on the shoe is completed the pin Iis retracted from the toothed wheel G, so as to allow the cam and plate A to turn and release the heel-piece D from its rigid position.
The lower section, 0, is hinged to the sec tion or plate H, as shown at S, in a mannerwell known in this class of machines, and a cam-lever and spring-pinsimilar to that above described may be used for holding the bar that is employed for holding the upper part,of themachine in an inclined position for manipulating the shoe..
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In a sewing and pegging jack, the combination, with the plate A and heel-piece D,
of the toothed wheel Gr, cam F, and pin I, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the plate A, the cam F, and heel-piece D, having the projection e, in connection with spring d, as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of the slotted cam-lever L, the spring-bolt I, the toothed wheel G, and cam F, in connection with the plate A, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a sewing and pegging jack, the slotted cam-lever L, adapted to withdraw the pin 1 from oonta ct or engagement with the toothed wheel G and hold the pin retracted, as specified.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES P. BUSFIELD.
