2 Claims. (Cl. 222-383) The present invention relates to certain new and useful impnovements in grease-guns of the lever type generally shown in my Patent No. 2,218,363, issued October 15, 1940, and it relates more particularly to a new and useful construction in the "head of such grease-guns, namely, that part of the grease-gun which includes the high-pressure cylinder and the cap-like or cuplike socket which receives the reservoir-barrel of the grease-gun.
The object of the present invention is to provide a head construction which will reduce the number of parts required for the construction and assembly of a head of the type shown in my Patent No. 2,218,363, which will reduce the cost of manufacture of same, and which will make the resultant head more durable and leak-proof, and which will permit of a larger intakeport into the high-pressure cylinder-bore, so as more effectively to enable the grease-gun to handle the more viscous and stringy greases and greases at the lower winter-temperature at which most greases become viscous.
The present invention contemplates the fusing or welding of the steel high-pressure cylinder to the pressed-steel cup-like barrel-receiving socket, in one of several alternative forms of construe tio-n, With an inlet-port drilled or bored through the Weld or fusion; such inlet-port being relatively large (compared to the transversal dimension of the cylinder block), so as to permit free intake of viscous or stringy greases.

The present invention may be applied to grease-guns of the general type disclosed in my Patent No. 2,218,363, as well as to grease-guns having details or features of construction differlever-type grease-gun having a head embodying cap).

Therefore, reference may be had to my Patent No. 2,218,363 merely to exemplify the details of one form of grease-gun to which the present invention is applicable, and for that reason the details of the grease-gun shown in the accompanying drawings are not described insofar as they may be the details of the grease-gun of my Patent 2,218,363 or insofar as such details may be of any conventional form or construction. Insofar as details of the grease-gun shown in the accompanying drawings are not particularly described herein, they may be assumed to be the same as those shown and described in my Patent No. 2,218,363, or may be assumed to be of any conventional form of construction.
In constructing the head shown, generally in Figure 1, I either provide a continuous weld or fusion. between the flat side ll of the cylinderblock I2, and the flat outer face 13 of the cap I4 as indicated in Figure 5, or I may provide two, or more restricted or limited fusion-areas or weldareas, one in the zone of the intake-ports l5 and one spaced 9. distance therefrom, as at 16, as
other or the solder-fusion or brazing-fusion of block and cap to each other, through the intervention of brazing metal or a solder, and also the arc-welding of cap and block to each other along their common boundaries.
Instead of drilling the intake-ports through cap andblock after the fusion of block and cap to each other, I may drill the intake-ports through the cap or through the block, or through each, prior .to the welding or fusion of block and cap to each other.
It is to be understood, of course, that the dimensiona1 relationships shown in the drawings in respect to the weld-projections is somewhat exaggerated and disproportionate, that is, not shown in true proportion, because, for the purposes of greater clarity in illustration it was found desirable to exaggerate the weld-projections.
The present invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and it is therefore desired that the present embodiments be considered in all respects as illustrativeand not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
Having described my invention, I claim the following:
1. A grease-gun head for lever-type hand-operated grease-guns, said head comprising a flanged, pressed sheet-metal cap-member and a relatively thick-walled metal cylinder-block having a cylinder-bore therein Whose length is generally co-extensive with the diameter of said capmember and having a discharge-port near one end thereof, said cylinder-block and said capmember having contiguous matching surfaces and disposed with their axes enerally at a right angle to each other, an intake-port through said cap-member in a direction generally parallel tothe axis thereof, an intake-port in one side of said cylinder-block in alignment with the intakeport in said cap-member and extending directly into and intersecting said cylinder-bore; the metal of said cap-member and the metal of said cylinder-block in the zone of the intake-ports thereof forming the surfaces of the passageway for ingress of grease and said member and block being united by fusion in an area completely surrounding said intake-ports.
2. A grease-gun head for lever-type hand-operated grease-guns, said head comprising a flanged, pressed sheet-metal cap-member and a relatively thick-Walled metal cylinder-block having a cylinder-bore therein whose length is generally co-extensive with the diameter of said cap-member and having a discharge-port near one end thereof, said cylinder-block and said capmember having contiguous matching surfaces and disposed with their axes generally at a right anale to each other, an intake-port through said cap-member in a direction generally parallel to the axis thereof, an intake-port in one side of said cylinder-block in alignment with the intakeport in said cap-member and extending directly into and intersecting said cylinder-bore; the metal of said cap-member and the metal of said cylinder-block in the zone of the intake-ports thereof forming the surfaces of the passageway for ingress of grease and said member and block being united by fusion in an area completely surrounding said intake-ports, and said member and block being further united by fusion in an area near the discharge end of said cylinder-block.
