Description
HARRIS & ZOINERV Cooking Stove.
I Patented Jude "7, 1859.
[we/war u. PETERS. PhoiuL'llhnMr. Wnhingmn. m.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
o. HARRIS AND P. W. ZOINER, OF oINoINNA'rI, OHIO, ASSIGNORS TO THEMSELVES AND J. LANGSTAFF, 0F SAME PLACE.
STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,852 dated June 7, 18-59.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, O. HARRIS and P. W. ZOINER, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stoves; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figures 1 and 2, are vertical central sections of our invention taken respectively in the lines 00, m, 'y, 3 the two planes of section crossing each other at right angles. Fig. 3, is a horizontal section of do. taken in the line 2, .2 Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of stoves that are designed to serve as heat diffusers and as cook stoves, but so constructed and arranged as to have an ornamental appearance, equally so as if intended only for heaters or parlor stoves and resembling them in appearance.
The within described invention consists in a novel oven attachment constructed and arranged in such a manner that the oven may be applied to the stove and removed therefrom with the greatest facility, without at all interfering with the smoke pipe.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct our invention we will proceed to describe it.
A, represents the body of a stove, B, the firechamber, C, the ash pit. The body of the stove may be of any ornamental form.
D, is the smoke pipe which is fitted on a socket- E, cast with the stove and at its back part, the top of the socket being about flush with the top of the stove.
F, is an oven which .is fitted on the upper part of the stove A. The lower part of the oven case a, which fits within the stove A, is provided with a chamber 7, containing a damper G, which 011 being drawn outward extends across the smoke pipe D, and cuts off a direct communication between it and the fire chamber. The oven case a, is double walled so as to form a fine H, all around it, said flue communicating at one end, with the fire chamber 'B, as shown at b, the opposite end communicating with the chamber 7, of the stove, as shown at 9, when the damper is in a certain position.
The damper G, is formed of a flat horizontal plate (Z, the inner part of which has ledges c, 6, one at each side, said ledges forming a rim at each side, as shown in Fig. 2. The damper is fitted in a chamber f, as before stated in the lower part of the case a, said chamber having the slot or opening 9, made through it at one side.
The operation is as follows: When the damper G, is drawn out, the plate d, extends across the smoke pipe D, and cuts off the direct communication between said pipe and thefire chamber B, as shown in red Fig. 1. The products of combustion then pass through the flue H, around the oven F, and through the aperture 9, into the chamber f, and thence into the smoke pipe D, above the plate (Z, of the damper G, as shown by the red arrows in Fig. 2. l/Vhen the products of combustion are made to pass entirely around the oven F, the latter will be heated in a proper manner, equally as well as if it formed part of an ordinary cook stove; and when the oven is not required it may be lifted from the stove and be replaced by any ornamental cover.
It will be seen that there is no arbitrary connection between the smoke pipe and oven, and that the latter may be removed from and applied to the stove with the greatest facility, in fact without any more trouble. than adjusting an ordinary Stove lid on and removing it off of the stove.
7e do not claim broadly a portable oven, for they have been previously used, but we are not aware that an oven has been previously arranged and provided with a damper as herein shown and described, so as to permit the ready application of the oven to the stove and its removal therefrom.
We claim therefore as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The arrangement and combination of the damper G, chamber (f), double-walled case (0:) and pipe E, substantially as herein shown, so that the damper G, which pertains to the oven, shall when drawn out extend across the bottom of pipe E, and cause the products of combustion to circulate as described, and when closed shall permit a more direct draft for the purposes set forth.
