This invention relates to sheet paper holders especially adopted for use in photographic darkrooms, and has for its object to remove from a pile of sheets, the top sheet from the pile without disturbing the rest of the pile.
The invention consists o'f means moving over the top sheet of a pile of sheets without disturbing the remainder of the pile, and then moving in the opposite direction and moving with it the top sheet leaving the remainder of the pile undisturbed, said means being in the form of a U-shaped stirrup surrounding the pile, and having a roller, said roller being rotatable in one direction only, its non-rotation position acting as a friction-hold on the top sheet of the paper pile, the means to make the roller rotatable or non-rotatable being within the stirrup and including a cam action.
The invention will be described hereinafter, an `embodiment', shown in the drawings, and the invention will be finally pointed out in the claims.

Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the various views.
Referring to the drawings, the casing Ill is of suitable shape to enclose a pile of standard size writing paper or photographic paper or the like. The front end II of the casing I is open and closable by a door I2. The door I2 is hinged to the bottom i4 of the casing by a hinge I3. The inner side of the door I2 is provided with an abutment I to limit the inward movement of the door in augmentation of the blocking action of the door against the upper wall I6 of the casing (Fig. 3). The door may extend slightly above the casing to provide a suitable grip. The inner side of the door is provided, preferably, with a nger recess I'I and with a light and dust seal I'Ia fitting into the open end of the casing. The inner wall of the door is provided with parallel recesses or slots I8, one at each end. Into each recess extends one end of a stirrup generally indicated by 20, which is U-shaped. Each of the ends or vertical arms 2l has a hole, through which a pin 22 passes, which pin is supported by the walls of the recess and acts as a pivot. The upper end of each vertical arm has a hole into which a horizontally disposed rod 25 enters to form a pivotal connection. The ends of the rod 25 are upset to form shoulders to limit the lateral movement of the rod. The rod 25 at its central portion has a roller 26. One or more rollers may be provided. The roller 26 acts also as a weight to hold the stirrup in a position to pressnupon the top sheet of the pile 2 in the casing. The closed end lila of the casing is inclined to arrange the pile with inclined front and rear portions.
The rod 25 consists of two parts, one a tube 30, and the other a out down portion which consists in a cutout 3| into which a cylindrical rod 32 seats. The depth of the cutout is about equal to the diameter of Ythe cylindrical rod 32. The curved inner surface 33 of the tube 353 acts as a cam. The cylindrical end 34 extends through the tube 39 and enters into the hole of the side member 2I and is upset as explained. This composite rod 25 with tube 30 and cam device forms the horizontal of the stirrup. Byvmoving the roller 26 in one direction, it is free to rotate. By moving it in the opposite direction, it is prevented from rotating.
The operation of the improved stirrup is as follows:
The door I2 is closed, and the roller 26 rests on the top sheet. The door I2 is now opened, to the position shown in Fig. 2. When the stirrup 2B is moved by the opening of the door, the roller 2B does not rotate and by a friction action of the periphery on the top sheet draws along the top sheet, to the extent of having its end extend beyond the casing as Shown in Fig. 2, ready to be gripped by hand, and manually drawn out. The door I2 is now closed. The roller 25 now rotates and in doing so moves frictionless over the top sheet without moving the sheet out of place.
Suitable snap fasteners 40 may be provided to hold the door I2 in closed position. A V-shaped block 4I may be provided to slightly raise the sheets at their front portions. The inner wall of the casing may be provided with cut-out portions 42 for the entrance of the side members 2| of the stirrup.
The device is especially intended for use with photographic paper, and the automatic operation enables it to be used in dark rooms, the quick action enabling the least amount of exposure even in dark rooms, at the same time the paper in the casing is sealed from light and dust.
I have described several forms of my invention, but obviously various changes may be made in 3 the details disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention as set out in the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a sheet paper holder, having a casing to enclose a pile of sheets, a pivoted door for closing an opening in said casing, an U-shaped stirrup supported by the door and supporting a, roller adapted to rest on the top sheet of said pile, and means permitting rotation of said roller in the inward direction and preventing rotation in the outward direction, whereby upon the opening movement of the door the outward direction of the movement of the non-rotating roller draws the top sheet outwardly of the casing from the top of the pile.
2. In a sheet paper holder, having a casing to enclose a pile of sheets, a pivoted door for closing an opening in said casing, an U-shaped stirrup supported by the door and supporting a roller adapted to rest on the top sheet of said pile, said stirrup being pivoted to the door, and consisting of a horizontal rod and a vertical arm at each end thereof, the free end of which is pivoted to the door, and means permitting rotation of said roller when said roller moves in the inward direction and preventing rotation when said roller moves in the outward direction, whereby upon the opening movement of the door the outward direction of the movement of the roller draws the top sheet outwardly of the casing from the top of the pile.
3. In a sheet paper holder, having a casing to enclose a pile of sheets, a pivoted door for closing an opening in said casing, an U-shaped stirrup supported by the dooi` and supporting a roller` adapted to rest on the top sheet of said pile, and means permitting rotation of said roller in the inward direction and preventing rotation in the outward direction, said means including 'a rst member having a circular interior, and a second member having a cam surface, within said circular member, and movable in respect thereto, and
a movable cam member which, when disposed in one position, permits rotation of the rst and second member in respect to each other, and when placed in another position prevents rotation, whereby upon the opening movement of the door the outward direction of the movement of the non-rotating roller draws the top sheet outwardly of the casing from the top oi the pile.
4. In a sheet paper holder having a stack of sheets, the combination of an U-shaped stirrup including two vertical arms and a horizontal bar across said arms, said horizontal bar having two parts, one a cylindrical first member extending from arm to arrn, having a circular bore, and the other a second cylindrical member having a diameter substantially that of the bore and having a part with a cut out portion forming a cam surface, within said rst member, and movable in respect to the first member, and having subcaliber extensions extending beyond the rst member, and engaging the arms and supported thereby, a movable cam member in said cut out and enclosed by said rst member, and a movable support for said U-shaped stirrup for holding the rst member on the top sheet of the stack, said cam member and cam surface being released when the first member is moved in one direction over said top sheet and being held in locking position when the first member is moved over the top sheet in the opposite direction to dispense the top sheet from the stack.
