This invention relates to a kite having the flying characteristics of a bird, and which has improved take oifand easier control.
Among the objects of my invention is to provide a kite adapted to take off in the slightest wind and with the slightest efiort; to create a kite with wings and tail fully skirted as flying wings and tail; to supply a kite having wings pivoted to flap to increase flying; to provide a kite easy to control and which has the minimum of pressure and tension on the person flying the same; to produce a kite adapted to do flying stunts within the control of the flyer; to create a kite adapted for flight of unusual height and duration; to supply a kite having the flying characteristics of a bird and which can be used as a toy, a target or for scientific tests and data.
My invention also contemplates such other objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.
While I have shown in the accompanying drawings a preferred embodiment of my invention, yet it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1, is a top plan view of a kite embodying my invention, with the movement of the wings and tail indicated in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of my kite; Fig. 3 is a rear elevational view of my kite; Fig. 4 is a top perspective view from above of my kite in flying position; Fig. 5 is an enlarged front elevational view of the wing struts and center structure showing the movement in dotted lines; Fig. 6 is a perspective view from below of my kite in flying position; and Fig. 7 is a detailed sectional view of the center structure.
The embodiment selected to illustrate my invention comprises a frame I!) having a vertical head rod H to the back of which is attached a sleeve l2. Continuing downwardly from the lower end of head rod I I are a pair of diagonally extending tail rods l3 and I4. A pair of substantially horizontally extending wing rods l5 and is have their inner ends pivotally mounted in opposite openings of sleeve [2.
A rearwardly extending pin I i has its inner end attached to sleeve l2 and a hook l8 on its outer free end, to which is attached a yieldable flexible member I9. Said member I!) extends on one side of hook it to wing rod l5 and on the other side to wing rod 15, to each of which member I9 is attached.
A fabric facing 20 is attached to frame III as 3 Claims. (01. 244-153) 2 hereinafter set forth. Facing 20 simulates to some extent the structure of a bird and has a head portion 2!, to the upper inner portion of which is attached socket 22 which receives the upper end of head rod II.
The facing 20 has a pair of wing portions 23 and 24 integrally joining a body portion 25 and having at opposite ends sockets 26 and 21 for receiving the outer ends of wing rods [5 and I6.
Attached to the lower portion of body portion 25 are tail portions 28 and 29, which are full skirted. At the bottoms of tail portions 28 and 29 are sockets 30 and 3| receiving the ends of tail rods l3 and I4.
Between head portion 2| and wing portions 23 and 24 are spaced openings 32 and 33. At the bottom portions of the wing portions 23 and 24 are spaced openings 34 and 35.
Across the upper extents of openings 32 and 33 extend guy lines 35 and 3! attached to the top edge of head portion 2! and the upper outer edges of wing portions 23 and 24 respectively. Across the lower extents of openings 34 and 35 extend guy lines 38 and 39 attached to the bottom edges of tail portions 28 and 29 and the lower outer edges of wing portions 23 and 24 respectively.
Extending across the lower portions of wing portions 23 and 24 are stitched portions 49 and 4| leaving therebelow loose flaps 42 and 43 respectively.
Integral with head portion 2| is a front flap 01' upper cup portion 44 to which is attached lead line 45. A pair of lead lines 46 and 41 lead from the tops of wing portions 23 and 24. Another pair of lead lines 48 and 49 lead from the bottom of tail portions 28 and 29. A sixth lead line 50 leads from body portion 25. The inner ends of said end lines are attached to said portions from which they respectively lead. The outer ends of said lead lines are attached to a ring 5| to which is attached a ball or length of cord 52.
In use my kite easily takes off in the slightest wind. The full bottom portions of the wings and tail ripple and spread in the wind and provide aids to quick take 01f and rapid flight. Once the kite is in the air, a short downward pull on the control cord increases upward flight caused by flapping of the wing portions. There is but slight tension on th control cord, and even in violent winds, the tension is minimized by my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A kite comprising a vertical head rod, a pair of tail rods contacting the lower end of said head rod and extending diagonally downwardly,
a sleeve attached to the rear of said head rod, a pair of substantially horizontal wing rods with their inner ends pivotally mounted in opposite ends of said sleeve, a pin with its front end attached to said sleeve and having a hook on its rear free nd, a yieldable flexible member extending between and attached to said wing rods and also attached to said pin, a fabric facing having a head portion, an integral body portion and opposite wing portions, full skirted tail portions at tached to said body portion, the outer end of said head rod attached to said head portion, the outer ends of said Wing rods attached to said wing portions, and the lower ends of said tail rods attached to said tail portions, guy lines extending between and attached to said wing and head portions and extending between and attached to said wing and tail portions, flapping portions at the bottoms of each of said wing portions, lead lines leading forwardly from and attached at their rear ends to the head portion, the body portion, the tops of each of the wing portions and the bot-toms of each of :the tail portions, a ring attached to the front ends of said lead lines, and a control cord of desired length attached to said ring.
2. A kite comprising a vertical head rod, a pair of spaced tail rods extending diagonally downwardly from the lower end of said head rod, a pair of wing rods extending substantially horizontally and pivotally attached at their inner ends to said head rod, resilient means attached to said wing rods and said head rod for holding th wing rods in unflapped position, a facing attached to and covering the front of said rods, lead lines leading from and attached to said facing, and means attached to said lead lines, for controlling the kite.
3. A kite comprising a frame including a pair of flappable wings, a facing attached to said fram and having full skirted wing and tail portions adapted to rippl and spread in the wind to expedite take-off, lead lines attached to said facing, and means attached to said lead lines for controlling the kite.
