Dec. 30, 19 7- G. E. CARRIER SKI RWgM/m 2% Filed March 3, 1945 Patented Dec. 30, 1947 SKI Georges E. Carrier, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, as-
signor to Joseph Robb & Co. Limited, Montreal,
Quebec, Canada Application March 3, 1945, Serial No. 580,891
8 Claims. 1 This invention relates to skis and particularly to sectional skis of the type in which the main or wooden part of the ski is divided transversely into two sections which are detachably secured. together in end to end relation when the ski is in use and may be readily separated for convenient storage or transportation.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a sectional ski of the above mentioned type embodying improved means for detachably securing together the two wooden sections so that these sections are more effectively held against accidental separation, or undesirable relative movement in any direction when the ski is in use.
Another object is to provide a sectional ski of the type referred to in which the component parts of the fastening means provided for securing the wooden ski sections together are designed so that the task of joining or separating said sections is greatly simplified and may be quickly and easily accomplished.
Other objects, advantages and characteristic features of the invention will be more readily understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in whichtransversely into two sections designated 5 and 6.
A rear portion of front section 5 is fitted between depending side flanges l of a channelshaped metal foot plate 8 and extends from the front end to about the middle of said plate. Section 5 is permanently secured to plate 8 by screws 1' or other fastening means and is provided, at its rear end, with a transversely extending horizontal slot which is relatively narrow in the vertical direction and relatively wide or deep in the horizontal direction. The end surface a of section 5 which lies above the slot I0 is disposed in a vertical plane while the end surface 5b which lies below said slot is inclined to slope downwardly and rearwardly from the mouth of the slot.
The central portions of the foot plate flanges I are rigidly tied together by a relatively wide horizontally disposed connecting web l2 which is welded or otherwise rigidly secured to said 2 flanges. The forward half of the web I2 is fitted in the slot ill of ski section 5 and serves to effectively hold this ski section and the foot plate 8 against relative tilting movement in a vertical direction. The web l2 may be fitted in the slot If! so as to assist the fastening screws l in taking the rearward thrust of the ski section 5 when the ski is in use. The forward portion of the rear'ski section 6 is also fitted between the foot plate flanges 1 so that its forward end abuts the rear end of section 5. The forward end of section 6 is provided with a vertical surface 6a and an inclined surface 62) which fit flatly against the previously mentioned vertical and inclined surfaces provided at the rear end of section '5. The forward end of section 6 is also provided with a transversely extending horizontal slot l5 which corresponds to the previously mentioned slot I0 and receives therein the rear half of the web I2 joinin the central portions of the foot plate flanges 1. It will'thus be seen that web l2 also serves to prevent relative vertical movement between the foot plateand the forward end of ski section 6.
The foot plate 8 is provided, near its rear end, with a vertical hole 20' which registers with a stud-receiving socket 2i provided in the underlying portion of the ski section 6. A metal plate 22 is countersunk in the upper surface of ski section 6 so that it extends across the socket 2|. This metal late is provided with a vertical opening 23 in line with said socket.
A removable clamping plate 25 is shown with one end resting on the upper surface of the rear end of the metal foot plate 8 and provided with a stud 26 which extends downwardly through the openings 20 and 23 of foot plate 8 and reinforcing plates 22 and into the socket 2|. The other end of the clamping plate 25 is bent downwardly and is shown resting flatly on the upper surface of ski section 6 adjacent the rear end of the foot plate. A hole 30 is provided in an intermediate portion of the clamping plate to receive therethrough a threaded post 3| projecting upwardly from the upper surface of ski section 6. A wing nut 32 is threaded onto the upper end of post 3| and is adapted to be screwed tightly against the upper surface of the clamping plate to thereby securely clamp the rear end of the foot plate 8 between the clamping plate 25 and the ski section 6. In the present instance the threaded post 3| is shown as being constituted by the threaded end of a, screw 34 which passes vertically through the ski section 6 and is permanently carried thereby. It will be understood,
drawings, it will be understood that adjustable toe plates and other elements of ski boot, harness may be arranged on or associated with the foot plate 8.
I claim:
with an opening receiving the threaded post therethrough, and a clamping nut threaded on said post in clamping engagement with the upper surface of the clamping plate whereby the latter is clamped tightly against the upper surface of the connecting plate and the runner section with which the clamping plate is associated.
