My invention relates to a manually or mechanically operated hair clipper, and an object and feature of my invention is a construction providing for different length cuts of hair by said clipper, this being by increasing the distance of the cutting blades of the clipper from surface over which the clipper is operated.
A further object and feature of my invention is in a hair clipper in which a clipping blade reciprocates across a stationary blade, and in conjunction with the stationary blade providing a movable spacing element, this having comb-like teeth, to thereby vary the spacing of the stationary blade in reference to the skin from which the hair is cut.
A further detailed feature of my invention is in a device for increasing or decreasing the spacing of the stationary blade from the skin.
A further object and feature of my invention is a hair clipper provided with a movable guard having comb teeth or the equivalent, such guard varying in thickness by being tapered toward its edge together with a structure for movably mounting the guard in reference to the cutting blades of a clipper so that the length of hair passing through the guard may be varied in relation to the skin and thereby at will causing clipping of the hair to different lengths.
My invention is illustrated in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation taken in the direction of the arrow I of Fig. 2 with part of the guard broken away.
Fig. 2 is an underneath view with the cover guard removed, taken in the direction of the arrow 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 33 of Fig. 2 in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, omitting the mechanism for mechanically operating the clipper.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line 55 of Fig. 3 in the direction of the arrows.
My invention is designed for operation in connection with a mechanically operated clipper in which the handle or stem is indicated by the numeral II, at the end of which there is attached a fixed comb and clipper blade assembly l2, this being illustrated as having a block l3 secured to the face M at the end of the handle H. From this block there is a thin tongue i5 which has a series of comb teeth l6 with cutting edges forming the stationary blade of the clipper. The mov able blade I! is located in a recess l8 at the end of the stem, this also having comb teeth l9 and is reciprocated laterally in a known manner.
The immediate feature of my invention resides in an adjustable comb type of guard designated by the assembly numeral 25. This has a main block structure 26 with a fin 21, the fin overlying the block I3, which block has a central perforation 28 through which extends the operating stem or rod 29 connected to the block 26. The block I3 also has a pair of lateral perforations 30 through which extend guide pins 3i and 32, the guide pins being secured to the block 26. One of the guide pins is provided with a series of notches 33 which may be engaged by a finger-operated pin 34, such pin having a knob 35 (note Figs, 2 and 5). The pin operates through a transverse guide opening 36 in the block l3 and is normally pressed outwardly by a compression spring 3'! engaging in a socket 38 and pressing outwardly against the head 35. The function and operation of the pin 34 is detailed hereinunder.
The movable guard 25 is normally retracted by providing a socket 40 in the block it concentric with the perforation 28 and a compression spring 4| is seated on the base of this socket and engages a cotter pin or the like 42 on the rod 29. This normally causes the retraction of the guard 25. The mechanism for manually operating such guard is by means of the lever assembly mechanism 45. This employs a finger-operated lever 46 in which a central portion is pivoted at M to a stud 48 extending below the bottom of the barn dle stem l I. A finger grip end 49 is bent upwardly at one side of the block. The free end to is located underneath the stem, extending transversely thereto. This is in a position to operate a bell crank 5| pivoted at 52 to a lug 53 located centrally on the under side of the handle stem. One end 54 0f the bell crank is engaged by the free end 50 of the lever 46. The opposite end 55 is positioned to engage the outer end of the rod 29. Thus, when the finger grip end 49 is pressed inwardly toward the side of the stem the free end 50 is rocked away from the stem, thus rocking the bell crank 5| to thrust inwardly on the rod 29 against the compression of the spring 45 and thus force the comb guard 25 outwardly. v
The feature of the comb guard to give the different lengths of cut to hair being clipped is by providing the comb portion of decreasing thickness by providing a sloping surface 6!. This tapers from the beveled surface 62 of the solid portion of the block 26 to the tip 63. In order to determine the length of the hair after clipping, the gauge scale 64 may be incorporated on the edge of the block 26 and the edge of the tongue l5. This is by means of the series of scale marks 65 on the side edge of the block 26 and a center mark 66 on the edge of the tongue I 5.
Where it is desired to lock or latch the comb guard 26 in any adjusted position so that the finger grip 49 will not have to be continuously held, the guard may be located in the proper position by manipulating the finger gri 69. Then the pin 34 may be thrust inwardly to engage one of the notches 33 of the pin 32. Then, on release of the finger grip 69, the spring 4|, being under tension to retract the guard, holds the end of the pin 34 in engagement with one of the notches 33. 1
For this purpose the spring 31 is made purposely weak so that the frictional pressure of the pin 3% in the notch retains the pin in its latched position and thus the comb guard in any desired location of adjustment.
In using the clipper the sloping surface fil of the adjustable comb guard 25 is moved over the skin, the hair extending upwardly between the comb teeth of the guard and the comb teeth of the fixed and the movable blades. Thus, if the comb guard 25 is retracted as shown in Fig 1, the hair will be clipped quite short but if the comb guard is thrust outwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, as the comb portion of the guard 25 increases in thickness, the length of the hair after clipping will be longer. The guard may be thrust outwardly until the bevel 52 is in alignment with the inner end of the comb teeth of the fixed blade l5 and the movable blade il.
Where it is desired to enclose the bell crank 5i and the end 551 of the lever 45, a cover guard '55 is used. This has one end l6 secured to the under side of the handle stem I l and another end at the forward end ll secured to the block E3. The sides 18 and 19 are secured to the sides of the handle stem and also to the edge of the block l3, one side being provided with a slot to accommoda e the lever 46.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a hair clipper in which a handle stem is provided with fixed and movable clipping blades combined with a comb type of guard, means for mounting said guard adjacent the blades, the guard having a thick portion and a sloping surface tapering to a narrow edge, the comb portion of the guard being adapted to align with the fixed and movable clipping blades, a structure connected to the stem having a perforation and a rod extending therethrough connected to the guard and a spring for retracting the guard, and a manually operable lever device mounted on the stem to shift the guard toward the cutting edges of the blades to thereby vary the distance from a skin having hair thereon and the cut made when clipping the hair, a lever device comprising a first lever connected by a longitudinal pivot to the handle stem and having a finger grip end positioned alongside of the stem and a free end underneath the stem, and a second lever pivoted transversely to the stem and having one end engaging the free end of the first lever and a second end engaging the rod.
2. In a hair clipper in which a handle stem is provided with fixed and movable clipping blades combined with a comb type of guard, means for mounting said guard adjacent the blades, the guard having a thick portion and a sloping surface tapering to a narrow edge, the comb portion of the guard being adapted to align with the fixed and movable clipping blades, a structure connected to the stem having a perforation and a rod extending therethrough connected to the guard and a spring for retracting the guard, and a manually operable lever device mounted on the stem to shift the guard toward the cutting edges of the blades to thereby vary the distance from the skin having hair thereon and the cut made when clipping the hair, guide pins connected to the guard, one of said pins having notches, a latch pin slidably mounted in a fixed structure connected to the handle and adapted to engage said notches whereby when the guard is adjusted the said latch pin retains the guard in adjusted position.
3. A hair clipper comprising in combination a handle stem, a movable blade mounted at one end of the stem and a fixed blade secured to the stem adjacent the movable blade, the fixed blade having a thickened block with a perforation, a comb type of guard having a thick base end and a tapering portion with comb teeth terminating in a relatively narrow edge, a rod connected to the guard and extending through said perforation, a spring interacting between the said block and the rod to retract said rod and thus the guard, and a lever mechanism operatively connected to the handle to engage the said rod and to move the guard outwardly thereby to increase the distance from the skin on which hair is being clipped and the position of the clipped cut of the hair, said block having guide perforations, guide pins connected to the guard and extending through said latter perforations, one of the pins having notches, and a latch pin slidably mounted in said block and engaging the notches to retain the guard in adjusted position.
4. A hair clipper comprising in combination a handle stem, a movable blade mounted at one end of the stem and a fixed blade secured to the stem adjacent the movable blade, the fixed blade having a thickened block with a perforation, a comb type of guard having a thick base end and a tapering portion with comb teeth terminating in a relatively narrow edge, a rod connected to the guard and extending through said perforation, a spring interacting between the said block and the rod to retract said rod and thus the guard, and a lever mechanism operatively connected to the handle to engage the said rod and to move the guard outwardly thereby to increase the distance from the skin on which hair is being clipped and the position of the clipped cut of the hair, said lever mechanism comprising a first lever having a longitudinal pivot mounted on the underside of the handle stem on a stud, and having a finger grip portion extending upwardly alongside one side of the stem and a free operating end extending transversely under the handle stem, and a second bell crank lever pivoted trans.- versely to a lug on the underside of the handle and having one end engaging the free end of the first lever and the second end engaging the said rod.
5. A hair clipper as claimed in claim 3, the said lever mechanism comprising a first lever having a longitudinal pivot mounted on a stud on the underside of the handle stem, and having a finger grip portion extending upwardly along side one side of the stem and a free operating end extending transversely under the handle stem, and a second bell crank lever pivoted transversely to a lug .on the underside of the handle and having one end engaging the free end of the 5 first lever and the second end engaging the said. rod.
