Application August 15, 1944, Serial No. 549505 v My invention relates to a bed lamp, more particularly for use in reading while in bed and the objectspf my invention are: I First, to provide a bed lamp of this class which is readily and easily adjusted to provide a diffused directional light suited to the particular position of the reading matter and the attitude assumed by the reader;
Second, to provide a bed lamp of this classln which heat of the lightglobe-is dissipated reducing to a minimum the radiation from thelight globe;
Third, to provide a bed lamp of this class having a reflection shield which is synchronized with the light directional adjusting means;
Fourth, to provide a bed lamp of this class which is readily adapted to fit various bed posts or the like;
Fifth, to provide a bed lamp of this class in which the angular disposition of the reflector is so arranged that the light reflected therefrom is indirect light; and
Sixth, toprovide a bedlamp of this class which is very simple and economical of construction, efficient in its action and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the. appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which:
Figure l is a side elevational view of my bed lamp showing portions thereof broken away and in section to facilitate the illustration; Fig. 2 is a bottom view of my bed lamp; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view thereof taken from the line 3--3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an end View of my bed lamp showing the clamp thereof in connection with a bed post or the like; Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view taken from the line 5-5 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on the same plane as that shown in Fig. 5 showing the opposite end of my bed lamp from that as shown in Fig. 5 and Fig. '7 is a plan view of the clamp of my bed lamp shown in connection with a bed post or the like illustrated by dash lines.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings.
The light globe I, globe socket 2, insulation 1 Claim. (01. 240-4) members 3 and .4, rings 5 and 6, casing end members 1 and 8, shield 9, and the clamp l0 constitute theprincipal parts and portions of .my'bed lamp.
The light globe l is a'conventionalelectric light globe screwthreaded in the conventional socket 2 which is provided with the conventional reciprocal switch member-2a. Securedto the opposite side of the socket 2 isthe casingend memberB. This casing end member 8 is substantially cup-shaped and is provided with an annular bead 8a, as shown best in Figs. 1 and 6 of the drawings. Engaging this annular bead 8a are the resilient fingers 9a. of the shield 9, all as shown best in Figs. 1 and 6 of the drawings. This shield 9 is substantially cylindrical in form and secured to the opposite ends thereof is the casing end member I which is cup-shape in form, as shown best in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
Positioned. in concentric relation with the shield 9 is the insulation member 3 which surrounds the light globe I, as shown best in Fig. 1 of the drawings. This insulation member 3 is provided with a longitudinal opening 3a therein at its lower side and is also provided with vent openings 3b in its upper side, as shown best in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings. This insulation member 3 is maintained in concentric spaced relation with the shield 9 by means of the rings 5 and 6.
The shield 9 is provided at its upper side with vents 9e and a longitudinal opening 9b at its lower side which substantially aligns with the opening 30. of the insulation member 3.
Contiguous with the edges of the opening 9b are refiector'p'ortions 9c and 9d. The reflector portion lid is substantially longer than the reflector portion and is angularly disposed with the opening 3b substantially parallel to the source of light at the center of the light globe l. These reflector portions 90 and 9d provide directional control of the light passing from the light globe I. It will be noted that the shield 9 is rotatably mounted on the casing end member 8 so that the direction of the light passing through the opening 912 may be varied as desired. 7
The clamp I0 is secured on the globe socket 2 by the clamp screw Illa and this clamp I0 is provided with two resilient fingers [0b and I00, the tension on which may be varied by adjustment of the thumb screw Ind. The fingers lab and lllc may be placed around various sized bed posts, as desired.
The operation of my bed lamp is substantially as follows: The fingers lllb and [00 are installed in engaged relation with the bed post of a bed and the lamp is thereby positioned in an overhead relationship to the reader in the bed. The switch member 2a is conveniently located for convenience of the reader in turning the lights on and ofi. The rotatable relationship of the shield 9 on the casing end member 8 provides directional control of the light through the opening 912 of the shield 9. The resilient fingers 9a of the shield 9 provide frictional detentionoi the shieldBin any adjusted position. The :heat of the light globe is coh'trollefl by the insulation member "3 and heat passes upwardly through the openings 3b thereof and through the openings 9e whereby the heat from the light globe I is substantially dissipated.
In a bed lamp of the class described, the combination of a light globe, substantially cup-shaped casing end members, a hollow cylindrical shield rotatably mounted on one of said casing end members and rigidly secured to the other casing end member, concentrically spaced insulation means inside of said shield and provided with an opening in one side thereof, said shield provided with an opening in the side thereof aligning with the opening in said insulation member and having reflector portions extending outwardly on opposite sides of said opening in said shield, said shield having resilient finger portions at one end,
