Description

UNITE STATES PATEN T OFFICE.
DANIEL S. AYRES, OF HOPE, NEW JERSEY.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 24,272, dated June 7, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL S. Ariens, of Hope, `Warren county, New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved* Washing- Machine; and I do'hereby declare that the following is a full and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
rThe nature of this invention consists in providing a washing machine with a movable and a revolving disk, inside of a stationary tub or cylinder. The movable disk is operated by two springs and a treadle, and the revolving disk by crank and cog wheels.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
.In the drawings Figure l, represents a perspective view of my machine, and Fig. 2, a top view of the same.
Letter A represents the revolving disk attached to a shaft H which is operated by cog wheels J and K.
' B represents the movable disk operated by shafts or bars C, to which is connected springs s, treadle D and band E.
II are the ends of the tub or cylinder in which the disks operate.
, L shows the top, or cover'to the stationery cylinder, which, in Fig. 1, is shown asL open.
M is the crank for turning the revolving cylinder.
Q Q, are the top and bottom side pieces 0f the frame of the machine.
In operating this machine after a suticient quantity of water is put into the cylinder or tub S, and` the clothes to be washed placed between the disks or heads A and B, the top L of the machine is closed, the clothes brought up to the revolving disk A, by pressing the foot on treadle D, which moves the diskB, and the disk or head A revolved at proper speed by turning` the crank M. The rubbing of the clothes may be regulated by the pressure of the foot on the treadle D, a heavy pressure bringing the clothes hard up against the revolvingcorrugated disk A, and a soft pressure on the treadle D lightening the friction on the clothes. I v
lVhat- I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The revolving and movable disks, 0r heads, with the mode of operating the same as applied to washing machines.
