This invention relates to a punch, and 'more particularly to a hollow punch for piercing gaskets, belts, leather, paper, and any other soft material.
It is the object of this invention to provide a hollow punch comprising a hollow handle or shank, and a hollow punch member removably nested and seated within said shank.
It is the further object of this invention to provide a hollow shank, with a removable punch having an inwardly tapered bore at its outer end positioned and seated within the end of said shank.
It is the further object of this invention to provide the punch receiving end of said shank radially yieldable, whereby said punch member is slidably secured therein.
These and other objects will be seen from the following specifications and claims in conjunction with the appended drawings of which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational section of the punch assembled.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the punch shank.
Fig. 3 is a right. end view thereof.
Fig. 4 is a left end view thereof.
Fig. 5 is an elevational view of the punch member.
Fig. 6 is a right end View thereof.
Fig. 7 is a left end view thereof, and
Fig. 8 is an elevational section of the punch inoperatively assembled.
It will be understood that the above drawing illustrates merely one preferable embodiment of the invention, and that other embodiments are contemplated within the scope of the claims hereafter set out.
Referring to the drawing the punch consists of the hollow shank or handle II exteriorly knurled at l2 to provide a suitable grip. Cylindrical opening I3 therein terminates in offset cylindrical opening I4 of larger diameter providing annular punch seat I5.
The end of shank II corresponding to enlarged opening I4 is slotted or split at points IS, with said split portions extending longitudinally beyond punch seat I5.
Thus, members I! corresponding to split openings l6 have a relative degree of flexibility providing a friction grip for the base of punch member I8 Figure 5 which is adapted to be slidably positioned and seated therein.
The outside diameter of punch member I8 at its widest portion slightly exceeds the inside di- 2 ameter of opening l4, whereby the former is frictionally retained within the latter.
The end of punch member I8 rests upon annular seat 15 in shank [I so that longitudinal pressure or hammer blows delivered to the outer end of said shank is transmitted to said punch member and to its sharpened outer end I9.
It will be noted that punch member I8 has a hollow portion 20 joined by a hollow portion 2| of reduced diameter, which gradually converges or tapers towards the sharp cutting end I9.
Said tapered opening permits the punched out portions of the material punched, to gradually move along the interior of the punch without being wedged within a limited portion thereof.
In operation manual longitudinal pressure may be exerted upon the punch shank II, or on the other hand, its outer end may be struck by a mallet or hammer.
In the inventors preferable embodiment the shank as well as the punch member are made of tool steel of spring temper throughout.
Referring to Figure 8 is seen that if desired, when not in use, punch member I8 may be inverted and reinserted in shank I I with the sharp cutting end l9 positioned within said shank.
Punch member I8 being removable, it is seen that a plurality of different sized punches could be employed using the same shank.
Having described my invention, reference should now be had to the claims which follow for determining the scope thereof.
I claim:
1. A punch comprising a hollow shank having a split end with a portion of the opening therethrough adjacent said split end being of enlarged diameter forming an annular ledge, and a hollow sharpened punch member extending into said split end removably secured therein and seated against said ledge, said split portion extending into the portion of reduced interior diameter.
2. A punch comprising a, hollow shank having a plurality of spaced longitudinal slots over a portion thereof to provide a flexible grip with the portion of the opening therethrough corresponding to said grip being of enlarged diameter forming an annular seat, and a hollow sharpened punch member slidably nested within said grip and registering with said seat, said slots extending into the shank portion of reduced interior diameter.
3. A punch comprising a hollow shank having a split end with a portion of the opening therethrough adjacent said split end being of an enlarged diameter forming an annular ledge, and
a hollow sharpened punch member extending into said split end removably secured therein and seated against said ledge, the outer diameter of said punch member being slightly larger than the interior diameter of the split end of said shank for frictional retention therein.

A punch comprising a hollow shank having a split end with a portion of the opening therethrough adjacent said split end being of enlarged diameter forming an annular ledge, and a hollow sharpened punch member extending into said split end removably secured therein and seated against said ledge, said split portion extending into the portion of reduced interior diameter, the outer diameter of said punch membe being slightly larger than the interior diameter of the split end of said shank for frictional retention therein.
5. A punch comprising a hollow shank having a split end with a portion of the opening there- 4 through adjacent said split end being of em larged diameter forming an annular ledge, and a hollow sharpened punch member extending into said split end removably secured therein and seated against said ledge, said punch member being exteriorly tapered towards its sharpened end whereby said end may be slidably inserted within said split end to bear against said ledge.
