Description

fer as..
July'15, 1947- E. G. R. GUsTAFssoN MARKING TOOL Filed May 6, 1944 Patented July 15, 1947 OFFICE MARKING TOOL Elof Gustaf Ragnar Gustafsson, Stockholm, Sweden Application May 6, 1944, Serial No. 534,418 In Sweden December 12, 1942 The present invention relates to a device in those marking tools which consist of a stamping die provided with one or more types at the end thereof, particularly for impressing marks into steel or metal objects, and of a holder with a bore or guide in which the die is displaceable and provided with means for preventing the rod from moving in the holder. The device according to the invention is substantially characterized by a line indicator in strip form secured to said holder and extended longitudinally of said die. This line indicator, at its lower end, or the type end of the die, is bent at a right angle and transversely of the die so as to form a tool supporting fiange. The flange is cut out for allowing passage of the type end of the die when the tool is applied to the object to bemarked.
The invention is illustrated by way of example on the accompanying drawing in which- Fig. 1 is a side view of one embodiment of a marking tool with holder, and
Fig. 2 is a View thereof in section.
Fig. 3 is a side view of another embodiment.
Fig. 4 is a corresponding vertical section.
Fig. 5 is a section on line V--V in Fig. 4.
Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate on an enlarged scale two further embodiments of the lower part of the line indicator.
In the iigures the marking die I is inserted in a bore of the holder 2 which has the shape of a prism with a recess l for the thumb so that the holder can be steadily held. That end of the die which is provided with the type, tapers conically and is flattened on its front face I4 towards the lower or type end, a raised portion thus being formed into which a groove 5 is cut which extends axially some distance along the die holder. The said groove accommodates a substantially V-shaped spring 6 retained by a screw 8 or the like located in the holder. The said screw serves to prevent the rod from moving in the holder. To the holder there is xed by means of screws I5, I5, for instance, a line indicator 3 in form of a strip of steel or other suitable material, the said line indicator extending in the longitudinal direction of the holder and being bent at its lower or free end at a right angle, transversely of the die, so as to form a tool supporting ilange 4. Flange 4 is cut out at I1 for allowing passage of the lower or type end I8 of die I when the die is applied to the object. When marking the object, the front edge of the flange is placed along a scratched line or a line obtained in some other suitable way whereby the types and the marks impressed by the types will be located along straight lines.
The front edge of the flange may be provided with mark lines, recesses 20, Fig. 6, or the like for applying the holder in the lateral direction.
" 3 claims. (c1. iol- 28) In order to facilitate the application of the holder to a cylindric surface the lower surface oi the supporting iiange may be concave cylindric, such as illustrated at I9 in Fig. '7, and, if desired, replaceable.
As indicated in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 the holder may also be provided with a longitudinally adjustable supporting member 9 having a spherical recess I0 to be used when the type is to be impressed into a cylindric work piece. The supporting member 9 is displaceable along a rib II on the line indicator 3 and lockable in different positions by a locking screw I2.
The details may, of course, be varied in many respects compared with those described above and illustrated on the drawing Without going beyond the scope of the invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A stamping tool particularly for impressing marks into steel or other metal objects comprising a stamping die provided with a stamping type at the end thereof, a holder adapted for receiving said die therein with means for holding said die in said holder against movement, a line indicator in strip form secured to said holder and extended longitudinally of said die; said line indicator at its lower end, or the type end of the die, bent at a right angle and transversely of said die so as to form a tool supporting flange, said flange being cut out for allowing passage of the type end of said die when the tool is applied to the object to be marked.
2. A stamping tool as set forth in claim 1 wherein said flange is provided with marks for the adjustment of the line indicator to the object in the lateral direction.
3. A stamping tool as set forth in claim 1 wherein said holder is provided with a separate supporting member with concave cylindric lower surface, and means for mounting said member slidably and adjustably in the longitudinal direction of said holder.
