SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,361, dated May 31, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. PAGE, GEORGE O. SETCHELL, and DONALD Mne- DONALD, ofNorwich, in the county ofNew Lon- 5 don and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft- Regulators; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a partof this specification. I Cur invention relates to a device for automatically closing the draft and exit flues of a furnace, and also checking and stopping the flow of steam or water through a safety-valve; and the novelty consists in the construction of parts, as will be more fully set forth, and specifically claimed.
The invention is employed upon that class of boilers in which a rubber diaphragm is used, said diaphragm being clamped between two disk-plates and secured between the same by screws, or otherwise.
The object of the invention is to furnish a device which will automatically provide for the accident of a rupture of the rubber dia phragm.
To that end our invention consists in the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- 5 Figure 1 is a perspective elevation of the furnace with my invention attached; Fig. 2, a sectional view, showing the rubber diaphragm and valve covering the steam port; Fig. 3, a plan view, with the parts showing the diaphragm as having been ruptured and the draft closed, and Fig. 4 a detail view.
It will be understood that our invention relates to that class of draft-regulators to be used with steam-boilers, wherein it is not only a desideratum to close the draft upon the inlet and thus rob the fire of its oxygen, but also to close the outlet for the products of combustion, and at the same time prevent the escape of steam or water through the disks which hold the rubber 5o diaphragm.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the furnace, having an inclosed boiler, (not shown,) and a a port leading upward into a chamber,

1) represents the valve-stem, having a valve, D, which operates within a threaded socket,

The object of our invention being to multi- 6o ply the power upon the valve D, so as to prevent leakage of water or steam from the boiler in case of a rupture of the diaphragm C, we employ a long lever fulcruined slightly at one side of the vertical plane of the valve-rod D. This fulcrum is formed by an internal perforated arm,f, which extends from the threaded part F, and said arm fis embraced by the bifurcated extremities G of the long lever G, which lever, extending outward, gives pivotal 7o bearings for a short lever, G The lever G has at its outer end a hook, h, which, by a chain, H, is secured to the draft-door of the furnace H, and the steampressure through the pipe I bears upon the diaphragm C, and consequently elevates the valve D D. The outer end of the short lever G governs the damper or exit-draft door which leads into the chimney.
It being understood that the outer end of the long lever G governs the inlet-draft, and that the outer end of the short lever Gr governs the outlet-draft, it will be understood that these two drafts being'closed the fire, robbed of its oxygen, will smother.
It being understood that in case the rubber diaphragm C should break the fire is to be smothered, and also that the steam or water is to be prevented from escaping from the boiler as soon as the steam-force can be overcome o automatically, we have provided at or about the pivotal point fa pivoted lever, K, having upon one end a sliding weight, L, and upon the opposite end a bucket, 70. This bucket hangs under a spout, l, in the upper disk, B, which 5 has an upwardly-extending periphery, b, and forms a cup to receive condensed steam which may be forced upward in consequence of the rupture of the diaphragm C. This lever K is provided with a transverse arm, M, having an I00 angular edge, at, beneath which the short arm G behind the pivotal point rests when the diaphragm C is in full operation.
WVhen the rubber diaphragm is ruptured it is necessary that a maximum of force should be exercised to prevent further escape of steam or water, and to this end we have contrived that not only shall the draft door [1 and the damper H be automatically closed, but that an increased leverage exerted between the pivotal point f and the extended point of the long lever h, bearing upon the valve 1), shall exert a more powerful influence to keep the portaclosed. In other words, we have contrived that the weight and leverage of the short lever G plus the pressure of steam when the dia-' phragm is intact, shall equal, or approximately so, the leverage of the long lever G.
The advantage of our invention is that, having a fulcrum point near the valvestem and an automatically-operating lever upon the same fulcrum, we may balance the pressure of steam when the rubber diaphragm is in operation; but as soon as the bucket, with its weight )f escaped water, counterbalances the lever K sufiiciently to ride the knife-edge on over the end of the short lever the multiplied amount of leverage upon the long arm G is apparent and serves to press the valve I) down upon its seat over the steam-port to until the force of the steam-pressure is overcome and the valve rests, the fire being subsided by the closing of the draft and exit doors.
What we claim as new. and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an automatic regulator, the raised rim I) of the upper disk, B, forming aeup, and ha ving a shed-spout combined with a tripping bucket, as and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination of the lever K, having a suspended bucket, lever G, valve D, disks B, the upper disk provided with means to direct escaping condensed steam or water into the bucket suspended from said lever K, and a diaphragm, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The lever G, fulcrumed at f, and the lever G pivoted thereto at 1, combined with an automatic trip in such a manner that both ends will fall in case of a rupture of the diaphragm C, as specified.
4. The lever K, havingan adjustable weight upon one end and carrying the automatic tripping-bucket upon the other, combined with the levers G G as specified, and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination of the automatic triplever K k k, with the levers G G G, with the valve D D, diaphragm G, and steam-port a, as and for the purpose set forth.
6. The lever K It is, having cross-bar M, provided with angle edge m, and fulcrumed upon the pivotal point f, combined with the long lever G and pivoted short lever G and with the outlet and inlet drafts of a furnace, as herein specified.
