This invention relates to a novel and improved detachable button which is expressly, though not necessarily, adapted for use on uniforms such as worn by military personnel, policemen, firemen and the like, and the purpose of the invention is, obviously, to provide a button which is readily applicable and removable, this in a manner to permit the button to be detached when the uniform is laundered or otherwise cleaned, whereby to permit the task to be performed without ruinous results to either the uniform or button.

The invention lends itself admirably well and particularly adaptable to service buttons, particularly those equipped with insignia. Such buttons are removed for cleaning and polishing and the invention permits accomplishment of this in an expedient and reliable manner, thus fulfilling certain desired ends.

Needless to say, I am aware that the broad idea of detachable, separable and removable buttons is not new. I aim to improve upon known types by providing one which is simple, economical and otherwise adapted for the purposes intended, the same being characterized by appreciable features of distinctions and refinements.

Briefly, the preferred embodiment is characterized by a hollow shell embodying an outer or top section and an inner or bottom section, the two sections being telescopically and rigidly fixed together, the bottom section provided with a keyliole slot to accommodate a headed stud for anchoring the button, as a unit, on the uniform, and there being a spring-pressed follower and retention plate mounted within the shell and coacting with the slot and adjacent head on the pin to retain the pin in the slot unless forcibly disconnected therefrom.

Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings.

The button is generally made of sheet metal but other materials may, of course, be employed. The shell, as before stated, comprises a main outer or top section 5 of convexed form having a marginal annular inwardly tapering rim portion 6 with a lip 1, these features 6 and 1 cmbracing the bottom section 8, the latter being of cup-shaped form with its flaring marginal wall contacting the tapering annular portion 6. The portions 6 and 'l are swaged or crimped around the cup element 8 to facilitate proper assembling and retention of parts. The part B is provided with a radial keyhole-shaped slot 9, this to accommodate the inner small head It on the double-headed attaching stud II. The larger head l2 at the inner end of the stud is adapted to be permanently secured in any suitable manner to the garment or uniform (not shown), as the case may be. The follower plate 13 is of general disk-like form and is wedged firmly down in place in the cup-like part through the instrumentality of a coiled spring Hi, the latter confined in the shell and resting at one end against the plate and at its opposite end against the crown portion of the section 5. The springpressed follower disc or plate 13 presses the head ill firmly against the inner surface of the disclike portion 8 of the inner cup section, this in a manner to hold the stud ll in place by friction. Although the slot 9 might be sufficiently gauged to afford a tight fit of the shank of the stud in the restricted portion of the keyhole slot, it is the disc 13, spring pressed as at M, which constitutes the essential retaining means for said stud.

It is thought that person skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.

Minor changes in the shape, size and arrangement of details coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice, if desired.

Having described the claimed as new is:
