A. G. FRANK l- IOU SER SNA'IfCH BLOCK" Filed April 5, 1944 INVENTOR 1 ALBERT 5. FRANKHOUSER BY 7 v a? ATTCJRNEYS Patented July 1, 1947 SNATCH BLOCK Albert G. Frankhouser, Lima, Ohio, assignor to The H. G. Shook Company, Lima, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Application April 3, 1944, Serial No. 529,328
This invention relates to a snatch block, and more particularly deals with a block of the opening type which may be opened under full load to gain access to the sheaves or pulleys.
The nature of the present invention will be fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the annexed drawings, wherein:
Fig. l is a side elevaticnal view, partly in crosssection, of the snatch block of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view, partly in cross-section and with some elements removed, illustrating a three-sheave block.
Fig. 3 is an end elevational view, partly in cross-section, similar to Fig. 2 but illustrating a four-sheave block; and,
Fig. i is an end elevational view, partly in cross-section, similar to Figs. 2 and 3 but illustrating a five-sheave block.
Referring to Fig. 1, iii is a top ring mounted on a hanger H, and i2 is the bottom ring mounted on a hanger IS. The hanger H is carried by a bolt iZa which also supports a fork, clevis or bracket lta and a second fork, clevis or bracket 14 (see Fig. 2). The fork We and the fork i are provided with a hole is adapted to receive a cotter pin it, and they are also provided with another hole I! adapted to receive a. pin IS. The prongs of the forks l3a and M are drilled to receive a sectional insert It. The lower portion of the hanger H is drilled in juxtaposition with the drilling of the prongs of the forks Ida and i4, and each section of the insert it (which consists of 2 parts) passes through the several prongs of one fork and into the opening on the lower portion of the hanger H. As illustrated in Fig. 2, the insert 19 passes through the prongs of the fork Ida and half way into the opening at the lower portion of the hanger H and is locked in place by the pin it and by the cotter pin it. When the cotter pin it is removed, the pin 56 may be used as a handle for withdrawing the insert [9. The other half or section of the insert 59 is shown withdrawn as the invention is illustrated in Fig. 2.
Referring further to Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, it and El are the side plates of the block and are hung on the insert l9 and thus supported by the forks [3a and M respectively. The side plates 29 and 2! are held together at the bottom portion thereof by a cross-bar 22a which also supports the hanger I3. Said plates 20 and 2!, with crossbar 22a, constitute a frame or shell. A plurality 9 Claims. (01. 25 i193) cf sheaves 22 are supported between the side plates 2?] and by a bolt 23 provided with a, bushing 22. The sheaves are separated by spacer bars 25.
In Fig. 3, 25 is a top ring supporting a hanger through which passes a bolt The bolt 28 also passes through a fork 29 and a fork 3d. The pron s of the fork 29, the prongs of the hanger 2i? and the prongs of the fork 30 are drilled in juxtaposition to receive an insert 3i in two sections one of which sections is shown in place in Fig. 3 and the other section of which is not shown. The outer prong of the fork 2!! and the outer prong of the fork 3B are provided with an opening 32 adapted to receive a cotter pin 33, and the end of each section of the insert 3! is provided with a pin 3 insertable in an opening 35 and adapted to serve as a handle when the insert it is to be withdrawn.
The forks 223 and 38 support side plates 36 and 3% which are joined together at their lower portion by a bar 33 supporting a hanger 3% provided with a bottom ring it. On the side plates 38 and 3'? is mounted a bearing bolt ti provided with a bushing 512 and supporting a plurality of sheaves or pulleys 33. A plurality of dividing plates t t, 55 and it are provided, each of which is supported by the insert 3%.
In Fig. l, ll is a top ring mounted on a hanger 38 which is drilled to receive a bolt 49. On the bolt 4% are mounted a fork 5t and a fork 5i. The prongs of the fork 53 and of the fork 5i and the bottom portion of the hanger 58 are drilled in juxtaposition to receive an insert 5'2 consisting of two parts, one of which parts is shown in position in Fig. 4 and the other part of which is shown removed in Fig. 4. The outer prong of the fork 5E? and the outer prong of the fork 5| are provided with an opening 53 adapted to receive a cotter pin 5 and the outer ends of each section of the insert 52 is provided with a pin 55 insertable in an opening 55 which serves as a handle to withdraw the insert 52 when the cotter pin 55: has been removed and the insert 52 is to be removed.
Side plates 58a and 51 are hung on the insert 52 and are joined at the lower portions thereof by a bar 58 which also supports a hanger 59 provided with a bottom ring fit. A plurality of sheaves 6| are mounted between the side plates 56a and 51 on a, bearing bolt 6 provided with a bushing 63, and a plurality of dividing plates 64, 65, 66 and 61 are mounted on the insert 52.
Referring to Fig. 2, if it should be desired to replace a rope or cable running over either of the outer sheaves, it is only necessary to remove the cotter pin Hi, withdraw one half of the insert I9 using the pin l8 as a handle, moving to one side the fork |3a using the bolt [20. as a pivot, and dropping the rope or cable over the sheave between the side plate and the dividing plate. The fork I3a would then be dropped into position, the insert I9 would be replaced, and the cotter pin It would be replaced and locked in position. This would place the block in proper condition for operation.
Still referring to Fig. 2, if it were desired to place a rope or cable over the center sheaveof the block it would only be necessary to remove the cotter pin l6, withdraw the 'insert 19 by pulling on the pin l8, pushing to one side the fork [3a, and causing the dividing plate thus released to fall freely. The rope or 'cable'could then be placed over the center sheave and'the assembl brought to its original condition. It will be noted that in either event, the 1oad on the block would not have to be removed. The full load would be carriedby one side plate and one dividing plate hung on one of the forks and on the hanger II by one half of the insert l9.
Referring now to Fig. 3, it will be noted that the same procedure could be followed to place a rope over any of the sheaves, and that in every instance the full load would be carried by one half of the insert 3|, the dividing plate 45, the hanger 21 and either the side plate 36 and the dividing plate 44 or the side plate 31 and the dividing plate '46. In no event would it be necessary to relieve the block of its load to replace a rope or cable.
Referring now to Fig. 4, it will be noted that the same condition would existhere. Irrespective of the sheave over which the rope or cable is to be placed, the full load would be supported by one half the insert 52, the hanger 48 and either the side plate'56a and the dividing plates 64 and 65 or the side plate 57 and the dividing plates 66 and 61, depending on which side or half of the insert 52 is removed.
Those skilled in the art will readily understand that the snatch block of the present invention offers many advantages over snatch blocks previously known 'or used. It will be noted principally that in no event is it necessary to relieve the load on the block in order to replace a rope or cable over any of the sheaves.
It will be further understood that while there have been described herein and illustrated in the annexed drawing certain embodiments of this invention, it is not intended thereby to "have this invention limited to or circumscribed by the specific details of construction, arrangement of parts, proportions or dimensions described or illustrated, in view of the fact that the present invention is susceptible to changes or modifications without departing from the spirit of this disclosure and the scope of the appended claims.
