Description
June 24, 1947. L. ARMSTRONG TYPE-WRITER ALARM Filed May 8, 1945 five/rfor jets/f6 1/7/075/7" Patented June 24, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TYPEWRITER ALARM Leslie Armstrong, Detroit, Mich. Application May 8, 1945, Serial No. 592,649
This invention relates to alarm devices, and more particularly to a device for giving a warning of the approaching end of a sheet of paper used in typewriting.
A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved warning device for notifying the operator of a typewriter of the approaching end of a sheet of paper.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved alarm device for a typewriter, said alarm device being of simple construction and positive in operation.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description and claim, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the main roller of a typewriter provided with an alarm structure, according to this invention, a sheet of paper being shown in normal writing position around said main roller.
Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the structure of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, but wherein the sheet of paper is approaching its end and wherein the alarm mechanism is about to function to give a warning thereof.
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, I designates the main roller of a typewriter, said roller being carried on a shaft 2 provided with end knobs 3, 3. Roller I is adapted to provide a writing support for a rectangular sheet of paper 4, which is held by appropriate clamping rollers in contact with a portion of the peripheral surface of roller I, in a manner well known in the art.
Adjacent one end of roller I a peripheral groove 5 is formed wherein a plurality of peripherally arranged free arms 6 are pivotally mounted. Said arms 6 are adapted to be retained in groove 5 by gravity at the upper portion of roller I' and will be retained in the groove at the lower portion of roller I as long as paper sheet 4 overlies said groove. In the absence of the paper sheet the arms 6 at the bottom portion of roller I will be free to pivotally move by gravity out of groove 5 and assume a downwardly projecting position.
Pivotally mounted below roller I and aligned with groove 5 is a weighted lever 1, adapted to be engaged by an arm 6 as said arm swings out of groove 5 to a vertical position and moves down.
1 Claim. (Cl. 197-189) wardly during the subsequent rotation of roller I. As shown in Figure 3, this occurs when the bottom end of the paper sheet 4 has moved beyond overlying relationship with respect to said arm 6. A hell 8 is positioned adjacent lever 1, said lever normally resting on hell 8, as shown in Figure 2. The downward movement of arm 6 raises the weighted end of lever I, and ultimately arm 6 is moved out of contact with lever l by continued rotation of roller I. This releases the weighted end of lever 'l, which drops on bell 8 thereby giving an audible signal that the end of the paper is approaching.
While a specific embodiment of a typewriter alarm device has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention other than as defined by the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is. I
A warning device for a typewriter comprising a peripheral groove in the main roller of the typewriter and normally covered by typing paper, the bottom of said groove being formed by a plurality of flat surfaces of equal length and Width, pivot pins bridging the groove adjacent the intersections of said surfaces, an equal plurality of arms each pivoted at one endupon a pin and in certain positions lying below the peripheral surface of the main roller while resting on a flat surface, a lever fulcrumed below said roller swingable in the plane of the groove, the free end of thearm pivoted on the pivot pin nearest the lever fulcrum swinging by gravity into position to engage and operate said lever when the groove portion receiving said arm is uncovered by the passage of the trailing edge oi" the paper therebeyond, and a signal element actuated by the lever.
