fm1/Waibli- UNITED .STA-STES PATENT OEEICE.
REUBEN W. DREW, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
LUBRICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,118, dated May 31, 1881.
Application filed Apm'l 15, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REUBEN W. DREW, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, haveinvented certain new'and useful Improvements in Lubricators and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forni a part of this specification.
Figure l is a vertical sectional View of alubricator to which my invention has been applied, and Fig. 2 is a view of the feed-rod constituting my invention detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both gurcs.
This invention relates to lubricators or oilfeeders for various kinds of machinery 5 and it consists in the improved construction of the vertically-adjustable feed-rod, by which the quantity of oil to be fed may be regulated, and. which is so constructed as to form an air-chamber, by which the pressure is regulated, so as to feed the lubricant evenly and regularly, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the oil cup or vessel, which is adjusted between two flanged caps or plates, the lower 4one of which, B,is provided with a downwardprojecting nipple, C, for adjusting the device in its proper position. A nipple, D, projecting upward from plate B, is provided with a male thread, E, and a female thread, F, upon theformer of which a tube, G, projecting downward from the upper anged plate, H, is screwed, as shown, thus clamping and securing the body of the oil-cup in position.
Washers I may be interposed between the body of the oil-cup and the flanged plates, as shown, to insure a tight t.
The upper plate, H, is provided with a central vertical opening for the feed-rod Y, J, which passes downV through tube Gr, the plate or cover H being preferably provided with a suitablyconstructed'packing-box, K, around said rod, to prevent leakage.
The feed-rod,7 as I term it, consists of a tube threaded at the lower end, so as to enter the female thread F in nipple D, and closed at its upper end, where it is preferably' provided with a milled handle or thumb-piece, L. In the lower threaded end of the feed rod or tube is formed a triangular or A-shaped notch or opening, M, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, through which the oil may escape through the nipple or opening in bottom plate, B, to the shaft-,ing which is to be lubricated.
The tubular stem Gris provided with suitably-located openings O, through which the -oil is admitted from the bulb or cup to the feedopening 5 and suitable provision is or may be made for feeding the lubricating material to the bulb or vessel.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood ,from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed.
It is evident that the feed rod or tube may be raised or lowered by the thumb-piece or handle, so as to adjust the size of the feed-opening, and consequently regulating the qu ntity of lubricant fed.
lt will also be seen that the tube J, being closed at its upper end, forms an air-chamber, in which the lubricant will rise only to a certain point, (indicated in the drawings,) above which the atmospheric air is compressed, so as to form an air-cushion, by which an even and regular feed of the lubricant is always insured.
I would have it distinctly understood that the form of feed rod or tube herein described may be modified in construction and applied to lubricators constructed differently from the one herein described. Thus, in certain forms of lubricators where the cup or bulb is provided with a closed top cap or plate, the upper end of the tube may be compressed so as to close it, and at the same time form a seat for a wrench or nippers, by which it may be vertically adjusted when the cover is removed.
Other modiiications of details may also be made without chan ing the nature of my invention, which consists ofa hollow feed rod or tube closed at the upper end and provided at the lower end with a triangular or A-shaped notch or opening.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. In a lubricator, the combination of the IOO cup or chamber A, anged plate B, having threaded nipple D, flanged plate H, having threaded tube G, and the vertically-adjustable tubular feed-rod J,e1osed at its upper end and provided near its lower end with a A-shuped notch, M, as described, for the purpose Set forth.
2. In zt lubrieutor, the herein-described vertically-adjustable tubular feed-rod J, provided at its upper end with u thumb-piece, Inwhieh 1o closes the said upper end, and having nearits lower end a A-shaped notch, M, as und for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto ufxed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
REUBEN W. DREW.
