This invention relates to a ticularly a bilge pump.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing for a more detailed description of the invention, 9 designates generally a pump comprising a cylinder 10 provided with a base H having openings l2 for receiving bolts or the like for securing the pump in position. The cylinder is closed at the upper end by a cap l4 having an annular recess in which soft-lubricating grease or the like may be placed. A circular opening l6 having tapered walls I! is provided in the cap and opens into the cavity of the cylinder. The opening I6 is or less diameter than the cylinder cavity and provides an annular shoulder l8. A single inlet and outlet port I9 is provided inthe lower portion of the cylinder. However, a separate inlet and outlet may be provided should it be desired.
Mounted for reciprocation in the cavity of the cylinder is a piston which is moved upwardly by means of a tapered coiled compression spring M which is interposed between the lower sur-' face of the piston and the bottom wall of the cylinder. In order to move the piston in the opposite direction a semispherical element 22 is provided. This element has a boss 23 extending from the upper flat surface 24 thereof and outwardly through the opening I 6. The boss is provided with a bore 25 which receives a stafi 14 Claims. (cums-inf 2 V 2B thatiis secured in place bya screw bolt 21. The semi-spherical portion 22 is of a size to be loosely received within the cylinder cavity and with theflat, surface 24 thereof normally seat-f ing against the shoulder I8 and closing the opening IS. A ball 28 is interposed between the member22 and the piston 20. This ball 28 is seated centrally in the uppersurface of the piston in a cavity providedtherein. The ball bein engageable along the'curved surface of the member 22 which provides for transmission of movement therefrom centrally on the piston 20 in "all relative positions of the member 22. The wall of the cylinder cavity'is lubricated by the .lubri 3 cant in annular recess I5 escaping through opening l6 when uncovered by the member 22.
When the staff 23- is moved from the normal vertical position to the side of the opening I6, some portion of the peripheral edge of the flat surface 24 will fulcrum along some portion of the shoulder l3. This action will cause portion 22 to rock inwardly as show'n'in dot-and-dash lines and through the ball 28 move the piston downwardly against the tension of the spring 2|. When the staff 26 is free of a movin force the spring 2 i is of sufficient strength to return piston and part 22 to the normal position shown in .member 3| in the form of a T providing three openings 32, 33; and 34. The valve is connected to the cylinder by means of a nipple 35 which is threadedly received in theopening 34 in the valve body and the port IS in the cylinder. -To the lower opening 32 there is fitted a coupling 36 for attaching thereto a tubular conduit 29 which may be led to the sump to be drained. The upper end or opening 33 is provided with a short nipple 31 which threadedly receives a sleeve 38 to which is fastened a coupling 39 for attaching a tubular conduit 40 for the discharge of fluid from the valve. A ball check 4| is seated in the opening 42 in the coupling 36 on the discharge stroke of the piston. A ball check 43 is carried in the sleeve 38 and is seated in the opening 44 in the nipple 31 on the intake stroke of piston. A slot 45 extends laterally through the lower end of the coupling 39 and provides a port for the passage of fluid through the coupling on the discharge stroke Of the piston should the pressure of the fluid be sufficient to seat the ball 43 against the coupling 39.
The pump may be manually operated by stingthe spring 2| to return ing the stall 28 from side to side of the opening It to rock the part 22 in the manner previously the movement in one direction abruptly changes to movement in the other direction and will rock the part 22 and move the piston 20 downwardly causing a discharge of fluid through the conduit 40. When the staff is free of the movingforce the spring will return the piston and part 22 to normal initial position providing the intake stroke. 'In'some instances such as very choppy waters it hasbeen found that suflicient time is not had between changes in the direction of the rocking boat to permit the spring to return the piston and part 22 to a substantially normal position. Under such condition the staff 26 may merely swirl about the edge of the opening l6 and prevent rocking motion of the part 22. In
' order to provide for the proper automatic operation' of the pump under such condition we provide a stop 46 comprising a strip 41 extending into the opening 16 and secured to the cap M by means of one of the bolts 48 which secures the cap H to the cylinder body. Should the motion of the boat be such as to cause the staff 26 to swirl about'the edge of opening it, the stop will interrupt such motion and permit sufficient time for the piston 20 and part2: to normal position. a

A pump comprisinga cylinder, a piston reciprocally mounted therein, fulcrum means, rockable .meansJnounted about said fulcrum means a moving said piston in one direction and having a surface within said cylinder and in contact withsaid piston and slidable thereon for and means for rocking said rockable means.
'7. A pump comprising a cylinder, a piston reciprocally mounted therein, fulcrum means, rockable means mounted about said fulcrum means and extending withinsaid cylinder having a surface in engagement with and slidable relative to J I said piston for moving said piston in one direction, and expansible means for moving said piston wind which is intermittent in force to rock the part 22 about its fulcrum and operate the pump as above described.
A cover 50 is provided when the pump is not in use. This cover. maybe provided with an opening 5| through which the staff 26 may pass or the staff may be removed if desired.
The term piston is herein employed broadly and intended to include a pump plunger of the diaphragm type as well as that shown.
We claim:
1. A pump comprising a cylinder, ,9, piston reciprocally mounted therein, an annular shoulder within said cylinder, a rockable member fulcrumed aboutsaid shoulder and extending into said cylinder in sliding engagement with said piston for moving the same upon rocking of said member about said shoulder and means for rocking said member. k

A pump comprising a.cylinder, a piston reciprocally mounted therein, an annular shoulder Within said cylinder, a rockable member ful- I ciprocally mounted therein, an annular shoulder Within said cylinder, a rockable member fulcrumed about said shoulder having a semispherical portion with the curve surface thereof posi-' in the opposite direction-and said rockable means.
8. A pump comprising a.cylinder, a piston'reciprocally mounted therein, fulcrum means, rockable means mounted about said fulcrum means and extending within sa'id cylinder having a surface in engagement with and slidable relative to said piston for moving said piston in one direction, a spring for moving said piston in the opposite direction and means for rocking said rockable means for rocking means.
9. In a'pump, a cylinder, a piston reciprocally mounted therein, fulcrum means, and means. for moving said piston comprising a member mounted about said fulcrum. and having a curved surface 2 in engagement with said piston and slidably related thereto for moving said der and means for rocking said member.
