Patented Apr. 8, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,418,510 FOLDING SHAVING BRUSH William B. Grogan, Long Beach, Calif. Application December 18, 1945, Serial No. 635,669
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to shaving brushes, and more particularly to a folding shaving brush wherein the bristle portion can be enclosed in the handle portion when the brush is not in use.
A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved folding shaving brush structure which is very simple and inexpensive to manufacture and which is adapted to be folded to form a, very compact article when not in use, said brush being easily unfolded when it is desired to employ it in shaving.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved shaving brush of the folding type wherein the bristles are maintained in sanitary condition when not in use and wherein the brush is adapted to form an article of minimum volume when in its folded condition.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description and claim, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view partly in cross-section of a shaving brush constructed according to this invention, said brush being shown in folded position.
Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the folded brush of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal cross-sectional View taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a transverse cross-sectional View taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of the brush of Figure 1 shown in unfolded position.
Figure 6 is a transverse cross-sectional view taken on line 6--6 of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a detail transverse cross-sectional view of the brush of Figure 1 showing the parts thereof in partly unfolded position.
Referring to the drawings, II designates the housing of the brush, said housing being generally rectangular in plan and in cross-section, and comprising a cup-shaped base portion I2 having longitudinally hinged thereto at I8 a eupshaped cover portion I3, the hinge being located in the median horizontal plane of housing II at a, longitudinal side wall thereof wherebv base portion I2 and cover portion I3 are substantially of the same size and shape.
A brush I4 conforming generally to the shape of the inside of housing II is hinged at I5 to the upper edge of the forward end wall IB of base portion I2, said brush I5 being adapted to be swung through an angle of 180 from its folded position, shown in Figures 1, 3 and 4; to its unfolded position, shown in Figure 5 in which the base portion of brush I4 is in abutment with the forward end wall I6 and is adapted to be rigidly locked in unfolded position by abutment with the forward end wall I'I of cover portion I3 when said cover portion is in its closed position with respect to base portion I2. A leaf spring I9 carried by base portion I2 cooperates with a detent lug 20 formed inside cover portion I3 to releasably retain the cover portion in closed position, said leaf spring having a manual release lug 2I which projects through an opening in side Wall of base portion I2 for disengaging spring I9 from detent lug 20 when it is desired to unfold cover portion I3.
Hinged to the upper longitudinal edge of base portion I2 opposite main hinge IB at 23 is an angular guard member 22 adapted to overlie the bristle portion of brush I4 when the brush is in folded position within base portion I2. Guard member 22 is adapted to snugly urge the bristles into compressed position inside the housing to facilitate the closing of cover portion I3 when the brush is being folded up. When the brush is to be unfolded, guard member 22 is rotated 90 to the position shown in Figure 7 and cover member I3 is rotated 90 in the opposite direction, as shown in Figure "I, whereby clearance is provided for rotating brush I4 from its folded to its unfolded position. In folding the brush to its inoperative position the reverse procedure is followed.
A plurality of ventilation openings 24 are provided in base portion I2 and in cover portion I3 adjacent the bristles to permit air to be circulated past brush I4 when said brush is in folded position in housing I I.
While a specific embodiment of a folding shaving brush has been disclosed in the foregoing description it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore it is intended that no limitations be placed o'n the invention other than as defined by the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is: V
A folding shaving brush comprising a housing having rectangular walls, said housing including a pair of cup-shaped segments hinged together at a first longitudinal edge of one of the segments, a brush member hinged to the upper edge of a forward end wall of one of the segments for rotation through an angle of substantially from a folded position within the housing to an unfolded position outside the housing, said brush member being provided with a base portion and 3 being adapted tolbe locked in unfolded position by abutment of said base portion with the forward end walls of the cup-shaped segments, and a guard member L-'shaped in transverse section hinged at one edge thereof to the longitudinal edge of said one segment opposite said rst longitudinal edge, said guard member being adapted to overlie the brush member when it is in its folded position.
