Description
(No Model.) 0' L. L. EMERY.
Knifeand Scissors Sharpener. No. 241,850, Pate'nted May 24,1881.
UNITED STAT S PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES L. L. EMERY, OF BIDDEFORD, MAINE.
KNIFE AND SCISSORS SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of'Letters Patent No. 241,850, dated May 24, 1881. Application filed January 27, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. L.EMERY, of Biddeford, in the county of York, State of Maine, have invented a certain new and-useful Improvement in Knife and ScIssors Sharpeners, of which the folloning is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any one skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a top View; Fig. 2, a bottom view; Fig. 3, a vertical longitudinal section and Fig. 4 a "ertical transverse section.
Like letters indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates to that class of knife and scissors sharpeners which are designed principally for domestic use; and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a simpler, cheaper, and more efi'ective device of this character is produced than is now ordinarily employ ed.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the sharpener; B, the tile, and G the fastener.
The body A is provided with a transverse V-shape d notch, at, near its center, and with the inclined lip or flange 2 at one end, its under side being grooved or channeled longitudinally to receive the file B, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4.
The file is pointed or has one of its ends sharpened to form a button-hole cutter or stitchripper, as seen at m, its opposite end being square, as shown at a.
The body or shank of the fastener O is cylindrical, and provided with an eccentric or cam, d, so that when the fastener is turned the cam is brought into contact with the side of the file, thus securing it firmlyin any desired position in the body A.
In the use of my improvement as a knife or scissors sharpener, the square end a of the file is arranged to project as seen in Fig. 1, the knife or blade of the scissors to be sharpened being inserted in the space I), and while held in close contact with the face of the flange z pressed down upon and drawn across the file B in a manner which will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters without a more explicit description.
When the implement is used as a button hole cutter or for ripping stitches the blade or point m is arranged to project beyond the body A, as seen in Fi 2, the end V of the body acting as a guard to determine the size of the button-hole to be cut, and also the depth to which the point may be inserted in the seam in cutting or ripping stitches, it being obvious that thc button-hole will be large or small, according to the distance the point projects.
it will be seen that by turning the fastener C, so as to remove the cam d from contact with the file B, the file may be readily removed from the body A, after which the fastener may also be removed by simplylit'tingit outot' the notch or, in which it is journaled, the implement consisting of but three pieces, and being exceedingly simple and easily constructed.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is The improved knife and scissors sharpener described, the same consisting of the body A, provided with the notch x and flange z, the fastener 0, provided with the cam d, and the file B, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth and specified.
CHARLES L. L. EMERY.
