LAWN MOWER SHARPENER Filed Sept, '7, 1945 N1 "EN TOR.
Patented Mar. 11, 1947 i LAWN MOWER SHARPENER James S; Morrison, Springfield, and Frank J. Arciszewski, East Longmeadow, Mass.
Application September 7, 1945, Serial No. 614,968
3 Claims. 1 This invention relates to improvements in lawn-mower sharpeners and is directed more particularly to sharpeners adapted for attachment to a lawn-mower.
The principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of sharpener adapted for attachment directly to a lawn-mower for sharpening the longitudinally extending blades thereof whereby the flier carrying the blades need not be removed as is customary.
Various novel features of the invention will be observed from the following description of the invention in the form at present preferred.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a side elevational View of a lawnmower sharpener embodying the novel features of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the sharpener shown in Fig. 1, with the motor omitted, and
Fig. 3 is a partial inverted plan View of the sharpener shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Referring to the drawings more in detail the invention will be fully described.
In the drawings the sharpener is shown as it is associated with the lawn-mower which as usual has a pair of spaced side frames 2, wheels 4 outside of said frames and a roll 6 rotatable in between the said side frames.
A stationary cutter bar or blade 8 extends between the frames 2 and a rotatable flier member in has a plurality of circumferentially spaced blades l2. As is usual the blades are arranged helically so as to coact with the blade 8 with a shearing action.
End members M are provided which may be secured to the frames 2 by bolts IE or the like and a. support [8 extends between and is secured in the members M by screws 20 or the like.
A slide 22 is movable on the support l8 and a platform 24 having slots 26 is secured to the slide 22 by screws 5.8 which pass through said slots and engage the member 22. The platform may be secured in adjusted positions relative to the slide 22 while said slide is movable back and forth on the support [8.
An abrasive wheel 30 has a shaft 32 journalled for rotation in bearings 34 carried by the platform 24. The lower portion of the Wheel 38 extends through a slot 36 in the platform, as shown.
An electric motor 38 is secured to the platform and the shaft thereof carries a pulley 40 which is connected by a belt 42 to a pulley 44 of the wheel shaft 32 whereby the abrasive wheel is rotated.
A central screw 48 is in screw threaded engagement with a boss 49 on the underside of the platform 2%. Other members 5| are slidable in spaced bosses 5e and springs 52 on said members 5! are disposed between the outermost bosses 50 and pins 52 of said members 5! to urge the said members 5| inwardly. The members 48 and BI cooperate to form a guide between which a blade of the lawn-mower is received.
An adjusting screw 5a is in threaded engagement with the platform 24 and a lock screw 56 is provided for engaging and locking the said screw in place.
With the members M secured to the side members of a lawn-mower and the support 28 extending therebetween, the platform overlies the rotatable cutter. The screw 54 is adjusted so as to support the platform from the stationary cutter bar 8 so that a blade I2 of the rotatable cutter is disposed between the inner adjacent ends of the guide members as and 5!.
With the motor 38 in operation the abrasive wheel 39 is rotated so as to act on a blade l2. The platform 24 is moved back and forth along the support it? so that the wheel 30 traverses the blad 12.
The member in of the lawn-mower is freeto rotate so that as the platform 24 is moved back and forth the m mbers it and bi between which the blade 52 is disposed swing the blade so that it is held in engagement with the wheel 30.
That is to say while the platform 24 moves back and forth in a straight line the helically arranged edge of the blade l2 to be ground is between the members at and 5|. They act on the blade to swing the flier Ill so that the abrasive wheel acts on the blade as though it were straight.
The member as may be adjusted as desired while the members 5| being spring pressed urge the blade l2 thereagainst so that as the platform is moved back and forth the blade I2 is guided for the action of the abrasive wheel.
Various changes and modifications may be made in the form of the invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
