Description

N6 Model.)
I E. A. EOKERT. Switch Operating Attachment for Street Cars.
No. 241,637. Patented.Mayl7,1881.
N. PETERS, Phnlo Llthngl-apher, Wiihillglou. D. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD A. ECKEBT, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
SWITCH-OPERATING ATTACHMENT FOR STREET-CARS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 241,637, dated Flay 17, 1881. Application filed April 1, 1881. (No model.)
on opposite sides of it two projections, of which one extends obliquely forward and the other obliquely rearward. By means of a lever, or equivalent means conveniently located for the driversuse,he is enabled to bring one or other projection into service, according to whether he desires the switch to lead onto the main track the'first and second positions respectively. Fig.
8 is a top view of my spider detached. Figs. 9 and 10 are respectively a front and side elevation of a modification of my bar-guide.
AA may represent customary main and side trams of a street-railway, a a being the usual tread and guard flanges. B may represent a customary switch-point. C may represent 2t customary street-car platform.
My switch-operatin g attachmentis constructed as follows: A bracket or hanger, D,firmly attached to the platform, affords journal-bearing fora shaft, E, to whose rear extremity is bolted my spider F, which has two claws, ff, of which that claw,f, which is on the side next to the siding projects obliquely rearward, and that claw,f, which is on the side next to the main track projects obliquely forward. Apin, f, projecting from the spider engages with a spring, G, which tends to restore the spider, whenever left at liberty, to its normal and inactive position.
The forward extremity of the shaft E carries a crank, H, to which is connected a bar, I, whose wrist or handle *5 is conveniently located for manipulation by the driver. A keeper, J, serves to guide and hold the bar I in its normal or vertical position.
The operationis obvious: Thedriver, graspin g the bar I,thrusts the crank H to the right or to the left, and in so doing vibrates the spider, and byits instrumentality shiftsthe switch inor out, as desired.
A modification of my bar-guide is. shown at Figs. 9 and 10, in which the bar I is made to traverse a slotted head, K, whose stud It is journaled within the dash-board or car-body, so as to permit the said head to vibrate in conformity with the changing angles of the bar.
I claim as new and of my invention 1. The switch operating attachment for streetcars, consisting of the spider F f f f spring Gr, shaft E, crank H, and bar I, sub;
stantially as set forth.
2. In combination with the spider F ff f spring G, shaft E, crank H, and bar I, the vi brating head or guide K 7a.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
EDWARD A. EOKERT.
