Description

40.241,552. Patented Mayu, 1881.
l ZMW UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN LEE, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,552, dated May 1'7, 1881.
Application filed March 29, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN LEE, of Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have in vented certain new and usefullmprovements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription ot' the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part ot' this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Y
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to monkey-wrenches; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafterfullydescribed, and particularly pointed out iu the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the head or jaw, which is firmly tixed upon the uppervend ot' the stem B. One side of the latter is provided or formed with aiseries of teeth, O, below which a suitable handle,D,is secured by a thumb-nut, E.
The movable jaw F of the wrench is mounted upon a socket, Gr, which slides upon the stem B, and is provided with a' recess, H, in which the stem B is fitted to enable the jaw to be slid or adjusted upon the said stem, as described. One ot' the inner sides of the recess H adjoining the toothed side of the stem is provided or formed with teeth I to engage the toothed side of the stem, and thus tend to hold the movable jaw in any position to which it may be adjusted. The socket of the sldingjaw F opposite its toothed side H is provided with a bevv eled recess, J, in which is adjusted a wedge, K, provided at its lower end with ascrewthreaded stem, L, upon which works a nut, M, adjusted (No model.)
in a horizontal recess, N, in the socket G, so that by operating the said nut the wedge K may be moved in an upward or downward direction, as may be desired.
I prefer to provide .the nut M with a laterally-projecting stud or handle, O, which, whilel it limits the motion or adjust-ability ot' the nut to a one-half revolution, enables the nut to be much more easily and conveniently operated than when simply provided with milled edges, as is usually the case. At the same time, by cutting` the threads sufficiently sharp, a one halt' revolution ot' the nut will be more than sutiicient to so adjust the wedge as to force the threaded side of the socket G against the threaded side ot' the stem B.
From theforegoiug description, taken in counection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. The construction simple and inexpensive, and the improved wrench may be easily and conveniently operated.
Having th us described my invention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States- In a monkey-wrench, the combination, with the stem B, having head A and teeth O, Iof the sliding jaw F, having socket Gr provided with teeth I, beveled recess J, and horizontal recess N, wedge K, having threaded stem L, and the nut M, all arranged and operating substantially as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
JOHN LEE.
