METAL WORKING TOOL Filed Sept. 18, 1945 fez/amid? Sieve/v B. Way
$322M A wa /'40 Patentecl Feb. 4, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE METALWORKING TOOL Steven D. Vaughn, Portland, Oreg.
Application September 18, 1945, Serial No. 617,025
1 Claim. 1
The present invention relates to metal working tools and is more particularly concerned with a tool to facilitate the drilling of longitudinal apertures in steel jacketed or solid bullets such as Government ammunition.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an eflicient drill guide and Work clamping member or jig.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combination drill guide and work clamping member of simpler and more compact construction than that of prior devices.
With the foregoing and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the invention:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention with a bullet in position to be worked.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Like numerals are employed in the description and drawing to designate the same parts of construction.
l is a fiat rectangular base plate of suitable width and length and is preferably constructed of metal. At one end a drill block 2 is secured to the top surface of the base by screws 3 or other suitable means. This drill block is provided longitudinally with an aperture 4 which extends from the end of the block to approximately the vertical center thereof where it is merged with a flared longitudinal socket 5 entering the drillblock from the opposite end. This socket is circular in cross-section and is shaped to conform to the end of a cartridge from the shoulder on its shell to the nose of the cartridge. A conventional form of cartridge and shell 6 is shown in the drawing as inserted in said socket. It will be understood that different drill blocks of various sized sockets will be employed to fit cartridges of different caliber.
A longitudinally slidable clamp I, provided with a longitudinal slot 8 is adjustably mounted on the upper surface of the base I at the end thereof opposite to the drill block 2 by means of thumb screws 9 which pass through the elongated slot 8 and thread into base I. This clamp is constructed preferably of thin metal plate having a fiat horizontal portion which is slotted as explained and a vertical portion disposed at right angles to the other portion. This vertical element ID of the jig is adapted to be moved into contact with the end of the shell and there secured in position by the thumb screws so as to firmly hold the cartridge against rotation or longitudinal movement while the drill is perforating its nose. It will be understood by big game hunters that a hollow point bullet is preferable to other types. By employing this invention old army rifles and ammunition can be readily converted to such use.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A metal working tool consisting of a drill block provided longitudinally with an aperture adapted to receive a drill and. a socket communicating therewith and adapted to receive the projectile end of a cartridge, an adjustable clamp adapted to hold the cartridge immovably in engagement with said socket, said clamp consisting of an horizontal plate provided with an angularly projecting part adapted to impinge the shell end of the cartridge, and an elongated longitudinal slot in said horizontal plate provided with means for securing said clamp in position.
