This operation will occur when the slide is down and the shaft is being clamped.
After the forged shaft has been placed into the lower twisting members and the lower holding members, and the slide is lowered, this operation of the twisters will twist the crankshafts to their proper relative angular positions. Subsequently thereto, the slide is raised while the twisters are in their rotated positions, that is, in the positions shown in Figs. 15 and 16. That is, the two outer crank pins will have been twisted in one direction, while the intermediate twisters will twist their crank pins in the opposite direction, while the position of the central crank pins will remain unchanged. This will place the crank pins angularly in the desired positions around the bearing shaft, which have remained in perfect alinement. All of the dies will then be in a position which fits the twisted crankshaft, and, as before stated, by having them slightly undercut in the required places, the upper dies can be stripped off and the crank shaft lifted from the lower dies. At the instant when the actuator members reach the limit of their movement, the slide 23 Will start its upstroke, while the upper and lower dies remain in their twisted positions.
In order to limit the movement of the actuator members 4641, and. consequently the degree of rotation of the twister members, pins or projections 69 (see particularly Figs. 1 and '7 to 9) are provided on the slide 23, which are adjustably secured to the slide, preferably by being screwed thereinto, and are held in their adjusted position with respect to the slide by means of suitable ,nutsor collars 10. These pins are so positioned that they will be engaged by shouldered portions H on the respective actuator members 46-41 (see Figs. '7 and 8), and therefore will limit the degree of pivotal movement of the actuator members as well as the extent of rotation of the twisters. Therefore, in order to vary such degree of throw, the pins or projections 69 may be adjusted, and, by so doing, the extent of throw of the actuator members may be varied. Before the actuator members are moved about their pivots 48, the slide 23 will have descended and the holders and twisters will be closed, and the pins or projections 69 will be positioned with respect to the bed. members, swinging about their pivots, will be limited in their movements by the contact of the portions H of the actuator members with such pins or projections.
After the shaft has been twisted in the manner Just described, and when the slide is raised so as to open the twisting and holding members,
the shaft, in its completed shape, may be ejected from the lower twister and holder members. To accomplish this there is provided an ejector mechanism which may be of any suitable con- 'struction, but preferably embodies a bar or member 12 (see particularly Figs. 2, 13 and 14), which After this operation the actuator is mounted within the bed of the press and has connected to it, preferably at the ends thereof, rods 13, on the ends of which rods are provided pistons 14 that operate in cylinders 15, the cylinders in turn being supported in any suitable manner, such as by means of supports 16 secured to the slide 23, so as to move with the slide. The bar or member 12 is of sufficient weight to cause the same to drop by gravity, moving the pistons 14 in the cylinders 15.
Spring operated catch members 71 are provided which project into the cylinders 15, and these catch members 11 have connected thereto pistons 18 operable in cylinders 19. The lower face of each of the catch members 11 is beveled, and the upper face of the piston 14 is also beveled, as at 80. The normal position of the bar or member 12 is such that the pistons 14 will be below the catch members 17 when the slide 23 is elevated, and before the operation of the press. When the slide 23 is lowered to close the holding and twisting members, and as the pistons 14 are at the lower end of the cylinders 15, as'the cylinders are lowered with the slide, the beveled surface of the pistons 14 will engage the beveled face of the catch members 17, so that the catch pass beneath the piston heads 14 as the pistons 14 move to the upper end of the cylinders 15, With the parts in this position, and when the slide 23 is raised, the bar or member 72.wi11 remain in its lowered position by rea son of gravity. However, when the slide 23 and the cylinders 15 are then raised, the catchmembers, being beneath the piston heads 14, will eventually engage under. the piston heads, and before the slide 23 reaches the limit of its upward movement. When the catch members 11 do engage under the pistons 14, a further raising movement of the slide 23 will cause the bar or member 12 to be raised. This will also raise ejector pins 81 which rest thereon and which are provided with ejector heads 82, causing the latter. to engage the shaft 30 and raise it from the lower open holding and twisting members, after manner (not shown). A suitable pin 83 (see Fig. 14), which operates in a, slot 84 in the ejector pins, may be provided to prevent the ejector pins from rotating.
After the shaft has been thus ejected,.and in order to permit the bar or member 72 and the ejector pins to return to their normal positions by gravity, and independently with respect to the movement of the slide, pistons diagrammatically represented at 18 are provided. Fluid pressure is admitted into the cylinders 19 on one side of the pistons 18 through the supply pipes 85, and operates upon the pistons and moves them backwardly against the stress of their holding springs, together with the pistons. The catch members "will then be moved out of engagement with the pistons 14, thereby allowing the bar or member 12 to drop by gravity. This unlocking means for the ejector bar or member 12 is preferably controlled by means of a suitable manual control 86 which may be of any desired construction, such as an ordinary hand-operated valve, and as shown diagrammatically in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
It is thought that the operation of this twisting mechanism will be clearly understood from the foregoing specification, but, briefly stated, it is as follows:
One member of each of the twisters is connected to one of the actuator members in such a manner that the actuator member in front of the press will rotate its respective twister memala-me 7; bers $ifi-One direQtiOn} whiletheactuaton memberin the: back-:- of the a press willirotate its twister member; in the-oppositedirection. The members of the: twistersand holders --are so constructed that the rotation of the respective lower' mem bars will rotate-theuppermembers when they are closed; and'- during the-cperation of twisting the cranks .on: the shaft. When; however; the slide is raised and thetwis'ter an'd hold'erme'mbers are separated so as to permit ejection ofthe shaft, suchoperation will be performed when the twisters are! in their twistingposition, that is,- the position which they assume after-the cranks have beentwisted or formed. However, after theejection; thelowermembers oi the twisters are rotated* back to their norfm'al positions, so that they will behorizontal, and them;- per, twister members, through' the mediumof the rack andgear construction; will be'irotated back totheir normal or--hoi'iaontahpositions; so I that Whenthe slide is lowered after anew shaft has been placed in the lower members 'of the twisters andholders; the upper twister and-holder members will move into co-operating relation with the respective lower 'memberst'o'clamp the shaft. The twister-members will then be-rotated-in the mannerialready described.
Withthis construction, it-will be manifest that asthe pressure requirements upon the twisting cylinders 52and -'5l increase, the pressureupon the clamping" or holding cylinders" will also be increased: automatically; It :will also be manifest that theejectingmechanism will normally: be inactive',,and. that-during the cycle'of operationjof th machine, and when; the slide reaches a predeterminedpointin the 'CYGIGJOf its return movement; the ejecting mechanism. will" be automatically locked to'the slide; toz'be "rendered "active thereby. Thereafter, the, ejecti'ngmec'hanism may be released and rendered inoperativefso as to be, returned toiits normalj'inactivepositibn,by gravity, atithewilliof the operator.
