21 Claims.
This invention relates to cutting machines and more particularly to machines for cutting Venetian blind tape such as clearly described in my copending application Serial No. 445,213, filed May 30, 1942, now Patent No. 2,347,603.
The object of this invention is to provide improved and further simplified means for cutting the Venetian blind tape.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be more clearly understood from the following description and from the accompanying drawings in'which:
Fig. 1 is a plan View of a cutting machine embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side viewthereof.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view on an enlarged scale illustrating the operation of one of the cutting units of the machine.
Fig. 4 is-a view in vertical section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
As illustrated in the drawings, my improved machine comprises a bed 5 having thereon the cutting mechanism which includesfeed rollers 6--6, for feeding the tape 1. through the machine, and a suitable tensioning mechanism, as indicated generally at8, for applying tensionto the tape, all of which is described in my abovementioned co-pending application.
In the form of my invention which is described herein, I provide a plurality of, cutters in. the form of scissors 9 which are carried on a disk, or frame, In thatis rotatably mounted on a post ll upon the bed 5 and adjacent to the side of the tape 1 as it is moved through the machine. A similar set of cutters is mounted on the other side of the tape I so that both sides of the tape may be cut at the same time. I
If desired, each set of cutters may be constructed sothat the disk member ill will have projections or blades l2 thereon each of which forms one blade of a scissors. The other blade of 2. clearly described in my co-pending' application, by positioning it. between the feed roll 6 and the tensioning mechanism 8. The two strips of the Venetian. blind tape are then separated and the cross threads or straps, indicated at. 21, which are to be cut in the machine; are placed inmesh with the projections. l2 of the scissor units so that the scissors, or cutters, are actually geared to the cross threads as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3. The tape: is then moved through the machine. by the feed rolls 6-6 which are driven by the motor indicated at 22 and pull the tape through the machine against the tension applied thereon between tension plates 8--a and 8--b. Duringthe movement of the tape, each set of cross threads in the tape is brought into. contact with oneof the extensions. 1.2 and thereby rotate the diskis so that. all of the scissors of the. unit are kept in mesh with the cross threads of the moving tape.

As shown in Fig. 3, the scissor may be construc-ted so that they each will include a plate 28 which carries the blades l2 and I3 thereon and is adjustably secured to the disk It! by means of screws 29-29 that extend through slots 3ll30 in said plate. The cam 19 may be made adjustable by means of an extension plate 3| secured to a projecting portion 32 on the hub 2B by a screw 33 that extends through the slot 34. This construction will permit radial adjustment of the scissors for varying the spacing between them in accordance with the spacing between the cross threads of different sizes and types of tapes and thereby permit the use of the same cutting unit on difierently spaced cross threads. It will be understood that the cam 19 may be adjusted for the lengths required to operate the scissors in their different positional adjustments. Lateral adjustment of each scissor unit, so that the blades l2 and 13 will project for the proper distance into the tape, may be made by sliding the support 35 on the bed and securing it in proper position by means of the screw 36 which extends through the slot 31.
I claim:
1. In a machine for Venetian blind tape including adjacent strips connected by cross threads, means for moving said tape through said machine, and cutting means including a plurality of cutters in mesh with said cross threads and operated thereby for cutting said cross threads while rotated about an axis.
2. In a machine for cutting spaced cross threads of Venetian blind tape, means for moving said tape through said machine, and cutting means including a plurality of cutters continuously in mesh with said cross threads and rotated about an axis thereby for cutting said cross threads during the movement of said tape.
3. In a machine for cutting spaced cross threads of Venetian blind tape, means for moving said tape through said machine, cutting means including a plurality of cutters rotated around an axis and continuously in mesh with said cross threads, and means for operating said cutters to out said cross threads during the movement of said tape. v
4. A cutting machine for cutting spaced cross threads of Venetian blind tape including means for moving said tape through the machine, cutting means including aplurality of cutters carried around a central axis and continuously moving with said tape by engagementwith saidcross threads, andstationary means foroperating said cutters during their movement'to out said cross threads.
5. A cutting machine of the character described for cutting spaced cross threads of Venetian blind tape, said machine including means for moving said tape through the-machine, means for retaining said tape under tension during the movement thereof, and a cutter mechanism located at one side of said tape; said cutter mechanism including a plurality of cutters carried around a central axis andadapted to engage and move with said cross threads during the movement of said tape, and fixed cammeans adapted to operate each of said cutters while in motion and at a pre-determined position.
6. A machine for cutting spaced cross threads in Venetian blind tape which includes mechanism for moving the tape through the machine under tension, and a cutter mechanism located at one side of said tape and rotated thereby; said cutter mechanism including a plurality of cutters, and means for operating said cutters while in engagementwith said cross threads for cutting said cross threads.

A machine for cutting spaced cross threads in Venetian blind tape including means for feeding the tape through the machine, means for retaining the tape under tension, and a cutter mechanism located at one side of the tape and actuated by said cross threads; said cutting mechanism including a rotatable member having a plurality of cutters extending therefrom and adapted to mesh with the said cross threads, and a stationary member adapted to engage said cutters and operate them to out said cross threads while in motion.
8. A machine for cutting spaced cross threads in Venetian blind tape including means for moving the tape through the machine, and a cutting mechanism; said cutting mechanism including a rotatable member located at one side of the tape, a plurality of cutters extending from said membar, and adapted to mesh with said cross threads, and a stationary cam member adapted to actuate said cutters individually to cut said cross threads upon reaching a pre-determined position.
' 9. A machine for cutting spaced cross threads in Venetian blind tape which includes means for moving the tape through the machine, and a cute ting mechanism actuated by said tape; said cutting mechanism including a rotatable member having a plurality of scissors extending therefrom and adapted to receive said cross threads during the movement thereof, and a fixed operating member for operating said scissors upon reaching a pre-determined position; each of said scissors including a pivoted cutting blade having an extension thereon adapted to engage said operating member as the scissors moves past the same and close the said scissorsto cut the cross threads engaged thereby.
10. A machine for cuttin spaced cross threads in Venetian blind tape including means for feeding the tape through the machine, and a cutting mechanism; said cutting mechanism including a member rotatable on an axis spaced from the tape and having a plurality of scissors extending therefrom and adapted to -enter between the straps of the tape and receive the cross threads, a stationary cam adapted to close the scissors while the cros threads are positioned therein, and spring means for normally retaining said shears in open position. i I

A machine of the character described including a mechanism for moving Venetian blind tape therethrough under tension, and a cutter mechanism including a rotatable member deriving rotation from the movement of said tape; .the said member carrying a plurality of scissors which extend therefrom and are each adapted to receive a cross thread in said tape, and a stationary member for closing the said scissors while'in register with the cross threads.
12'. In a" machine for cutting spaced cross threads in a tape of textile material, means for moving said tape through the machine, a cutting mechanism including a plurality of cutters rotatable about an axisspaced from said tape and adapted to move with and contact said cross threads, a stationary member for operating said cutters to cut said cross threads at a predetermined position during the continuous movement thereof, and means for adjusting said stationary member for pre-determining said position.
13. In a machine for cutting spaced cross threads between adjacent strips of textile material, means for moving said tape through the machine, a cutting mechanism comprising a rotatable member having a plurality of spaced scissors extending therefrom and adapted to engage and out said cross threads; each of said scissors including a blade fixed to said rotatable member, a pivoted blade, and stationary means for operating said pivoted blade.
14. In a machine for cutting spaced cross threads between adjacent strips of textile material, means for moving said tape through the machine, a cutting mechanism comprising a rotatable member having a plurality of scissors extending therefrom and adapted to receive said cross threads during continuous movement of the tape, a stationary member for operating said scissors to out said cross threads when in predetermined position relative thereto, and means for adjusting said scissors to vary the spacing thereof in accordance with the spacing of said cross threads.
15. A cutting machine as set forth in claim 14 including means for adjusting said operating means in accordance with the adjustment of the said scissors.
16. In a machine for cutting spaced cross threads in a tape of textile material, means for moving said tape through the machine, a cutting mechanism including a post spaced from said tape, a rotatable member on said post, a plurality of cutters carried on said rotatable member and adapted to engage said cross threads and thereby rotate said member, and stationary means extending from said post and adapted to successively operate said cutters during the movement thereof while in cutting position relative to said cross threads.
17. In a machine for cutting spaced cross threads in a textile tape, a cutting mechanism including a plurality of cutters rotatable about an axis spaced from the tape and adapted to be engaged by said cross threads and rotated thereby, and means for successively operating each of said cutters to out said cross threads while moving therewith.
18. In a machine for cutting spaced portions in a strip of material, means for moving said strip through the machine, cutting means actuated by and continuously moving with said strip, and stationary means for operating said cutting means to out said spaced portions.
19. In a machine for Venetian blind tape including adjacent strips connected by cross threads or straps, means for moving said tape through the machine, and cutting means continually movable with said tape and operatable for cutting said cross threads or straps during the movement of said tape.
20. In a machine for Venetian blind tape including adjacent straps connected by cross threads or straps, means for moving said tape through the machine, an operating member, and a cutting mechanism including a plurality of cutters continuously moving with said tape and operable by said operating member, upon said cutters passing the same, for cutting said cross threads during the movement of said tape through the machine.
21. In a machine for cutting a portion in a tape-like material, means for moving said material in the machine, a cutter adapted to be engaged by said portion and moved thereby, and means rendered operatable by the movement of the cutter to cause operation of said cutter to cut said portion.
