NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPHOS F. ELLIOT, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
ATOMIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,337, dated May 10, 1881.
Application filed December 23, 1880. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPI-IOS F. ELLIOT, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and in the State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Atomizers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of instruments known as atomizers, sprays, or douches, for the local application of liquid medicinesin afinelydivided condition; and it has for its object to provide an instrument by means of which the atomization of the material may be readily effected, which will be neat and always ready for use, and which will not be liable to get out of order. These objects I attain by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whiel1 Figure 1 represents a sectional view, showing my device complete; and Fig. 2, a detached view, showing the lower end of the stopper of the vessel or bottle employed to contain the material.
The letter A indicates a wide-mouth bottle or flask, which is designed to contain the material to be administered, and B the stopper adapted to fit within the mouth of the vessel or bottle. The stopper and bottle may be constructed of the usual material, vulcanized rubber being preferred for the stopper and glass for the bottle. The stopper is formed with a recess, G, in its lower end, at one side, the said recess being semicircular in horizontal section, as shown. This recess is designed to contain a sponge or other suitable material, by means of which the liquid, as it is forced out, maybe finely subdivided, as more fully hereinafter explained.
The letter 11 indicates an ordinary elastic airforcing bulb, which connects with a tube, I, leading down through the cork, by means of which air under pressure may be forced into the bottle.
K indicates a jet-tube provided with a small globular termination,L, which has an opening, M, for the escape of the liquid. The tube K extends through the stopper into the recess therein, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The material to be administered is placed in the flask in sufficient quantity, and when required for use thcfiask is tilted to one side, so as to cover the sponge N in the cavity in the stopper. Upon forcing air into the flask, by means of the elastic bulb, the liquid will be driven out through the sponge and jet-tube in the form of spray, and can be applied to any desired part of the patient.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
In combination with the vessel A, the stopper B, provided with a recess, G, at one side, the sponge located in said recess, the tubes I and K, and the air-blast device, the Whole arranged to operate substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of December, 1880.
ADOLPHOS F. ELLIOT.
