SEPARATOR FOR SMUT-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,126, dated May 24, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, G. P. JORDAN, of Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Separator and Smut-Machine, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the anexed drawings, making a part of this specifica tion, in which- Figure l, is a vertical central section of my invention, taken in the line w, m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2, is a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line y, y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention consists in a peculiar arrangement and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the desired work, to wit, the separating of smut and other impurities or foreign substances from grain is effected by a very simple machine and in a perfect manner.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A, represents the frame of the machine, which may be constructed in any proper manner to support the working parts. In the upper part of the frame A, a horizontal box B, is placed. This box has two parallel partitions a, a, placed in it, said partitions forming three chambers, b, b, 0, two of which, I), b, communicate directly with a chamber 0, the upper end of which communicates with a blast spout D, of siphon form, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The lower end of the blast spout D, is made of sinuous form, as is also shown clearly at (Z, (Z, in Fig. 1.
Below the box B, a fan box IE, is placed. F, is the fan, of usual construction, and placed on a shaft G, the lower end of which is stepped in the lower part of the frame A, as shown at e. The fan box IE, communicates with the central chamber 0, of the box B, as shown at f, Fig. 1. The outer ends of the partitions a, a, are connected by a curved screen 9, and all three chambers b, b, 0, communicate with a spout H, having a flap h, at its lower end.
On the top of the box B, a screen I, is placed. This screen is formed of three horizontal wheels J, which are attached to the same shaft G, as the fan E. These wheels have radial inclined and corrugated arms 2', and are provided at their peripheries with vertical plates or segments j, the outer surfaces of which are fluted or corrugated vertically, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The plates or segments j, extend from one wheel to the other. The wheels J, are encompassed by a perforated cylinder K, and the cylinder K, is encompassed by a tight cylinder L, a space B, being allowed between the two cylinders which space communicates with the chambers I), b, of the box B, by means of openings Z, which are shown in Fig. 2. The inner side of the perforated cylinder K, has oblique-faced corrugated plates m, attached to it. These plates m, extend nearly the whole height of the cylinder K. The cylinder K, is covered by a plate a, the under side of which is provided with radial in clined plates having corrugated faces, and

The lower part of the scourer communicates by means of an opening .1", covered by a screen or sieve s, with a spout t, which communicates with the external air and the lower part of the scourer also communicates with a spout t which leads into the spout D, just above its sinouus lower part d.
On the box B, a frame or stand M, is placed. This frame or stand has a shoe N, fitted in its upper end, said shoe having a shake motion given it in any proper way. In the shoe N, two screens a, o, are placed. The upper screen a, being coarse and allowing the wheat or grain to pass through it, and the lower screen being fine and allowing only finer particles than the grain to pass through it. The bottom of the shoe N, communicates with a spout O, and the fine screen c, has a spout w, attached, as shown clearly in Fig. 1.
The upper end of the spout D, communicates with the interior of'the scourer I, and a partition plate a is placed in this end of the spout, one portion of the spout communicating with the opening p, and the other part with the opening 0, the latter parthaving a screen 72 fitted in it. I
In each partition a, a, of the box B, a valve 0 is placed.
The operation of the machine is as follows. The wheat to be cleaned passes on the screen 10, and is allowed to pass through it, the coarse foreign substances falling off the depressed end of the screen. 'The grain, deprived of coarse foreign substances, falls on the finer screen 4;, through which it cannot pass. 7
The finer foreign substances pass through screen 1;, and are conveyed by the spout 0,
then passes through the scourer and is subjected to a scouring action by the arms 5,
and plates j, of the wheels J, in combination with the stationary plates m, attached to the perforated cylinder K. The plates m, as the grain is thrown against them by the wheels J, serving to deflect the grain back again and thereby subjecting it to a perfect scouring action. The grain while being scoured is subjected to a blast that carries the loosened smut up through the opening 39, into the chamber C, and into the chambers 12,6, and through the valves 0 into the fan box E; the valves 0 however if it is desired to retain all the offal, are closed, the blast passing entirely through the screen g. The grain leaves the scourer I, through the spout t and passes into the lower sinuous portion-of the spout D, where it is again subjected to a blast in a very effective manner, the grain being deflected from one side of the spout to the other, see red arrows, Fig. 1. The clean grain falling from the end of the spout D. All smut or dust that passes through the perforated cylinder K, is drawn by a blast through the openings Z, into the chambers Z), Z). T
From the above description of parts it will be seen that the smut is taken upward from the grain as soon as it is separated from it, the flap 9, preventing any smut passing through the opening 0. The machine is very compact, has been practically tested and operates in the most efiicient manner.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I a 1.
