G. E. WALDEGK.
No. 24L098. Patented May 3,1881
w Wwf NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. WALDECK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,098, dated May 3, 1881.
Application filed December 20, 1880. (No model.)
To all. whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES E. WALDECK, a subject ot' the Emperor ot' Germ any, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States ot' America, have invented an Improvement in the Manufacture ot' Pearl H andles, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of handles which are ornamented with strips otl pearl-shell, the object of my invention being to make in a simple manner a strong and permanent handle ot' this class.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view, drawn to an enlarged scale and partly in section, showing the pieces of which the handleis composed, said pieces being detached from each other; Fig. 2, a side view of' part of Fig. l, Fig. 3, a section on the line 1 2 of part ofthe handle; Fig. 4, an exterior view of the handle drawn to a reduced scale; Fig. 5, a view of a moditied form of handle, also drawn to a reduced scale; Fig. 6, another form ot' handle drawn to an enlarged scale, and partly in section; and Fig. 7, a perspective View ot' a section ot' 'one ot the tubes composing the handle.
In Figs. l, 2, 3, and 4, A represents the stem ot' the handle, secured to a door or drawer, B, the outer portion ot' this stem consisting ot' a ring, a.
Strips b, ot pearl, reduced to wedge shape, as shown in Fig 7, are titted and temporarily sccurcd together, and are then turned in a lathe so as to form a tube, E, which in the present instance is ot' a tapering form, and which is reduced at the opposite ends, c andf. Two of these tubes will in most cases be required in making a handle, the reduced ends e ot the tubes being titted into the ring t of the stem, and a cap, F, being fitted to the reduced end fof each tube, a central rod, G, serving to secure the whole firmly together. This rod may be threaded at each end and adapted to internally-threaded openings in the caps F; or the rod may be riveted at each end, or may have ornamental nuts bearing against the caps; or it may have a head at one end and a nut on the other end. Indeed, it is immaterial how the rod is constructed, providing it serves to coniine the caps and tubes to the ring of the stem A, the completed handle presenting the appearance shown in Fig. 4, and the pearl portion having the highly-attractive iridescent appearance peculiar to pearl-shell. Each tube E has, in the present instance, a tubular core, 00,01 wood or cork; but this is not essential in carrying out my invention, nor is it necessary to reduce the tapering tubes ot' pearl-shell at the ends, as the small ends ot' the tubes may tit against a shoulder in the ring a, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the caps F may overlap the tubes.
My improved handles may be used for carriage'doors or safe-doors, in which cases they will be combined with latchin g or lookin g mechanism.
My in vention may lalso be applied to handles of the character shown in Fig. 5, in which case one tube only ot' pearl-shell will be required 5 or the invention may be adopted in the manufacture ot' pendulous handles, as shown in Fig. 6, in which the ring a for receiving the ends ot' the pearl-shell tubes forms part of an arm, H, which is pivoted to a bracket, I, secured tothe front ot" a door or other object.
Handles for umbrellas, parasols, &c., may consist of .a central ring, opposite end caps, tubes, and a connecting-rod; or a single tube and connecting-rod may be combined with two end caps, the central ring being dispensed with.
I claim as my invention- A handle in which a ring, a., forming part of' the stem or arm of the handle, is combined with a tube or tubes composed ot' strips ot pearl-shell, a cap or caps, F, and a connectingrod, G, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereotI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribin g witnesses.
GH. E. WALDEGK.
