UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,410,188 BUTTON WING Fon GARMENT SLEEVES Charles Solomon, New York, N. Y. Application October 23, 1944, Serial No. 559,907
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a button wing for garment sleeves.
More specifically, the invention proposes the construction of a garment having a button 'wing on each of its sleeves at the cuff thereof.
Another object is to provide a button wing for garment sleeves and an improved seam for the same.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure- Fig. 1 is a front view of a garment constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the cuff oi one of the sleeves of the garment showing the button wing of the present invention.
Fig. 3 is a rear view of the structure shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary elevational View of the hem of the sleeve.
Fig. 7 is a section on the line 'i-l of Fig. 6.
The garment, according to this invention, may be worn by either man or woman, and comprises a front I!) buttoned down the middle, a collar lI, sleeves I2, pockets I3 and a back I4. The garment may be made of any suitable material such as wool, silk, or rayon. If desired, it may have a solid front instead of a buttoned front.
Each of the sleeves I2 is made of a front strip of cloth I5 and a rear strip of cloth I6, a1- though as is clearly shown in the drawing the strip I5 has a portion Il extending around to the rear of the sleeve and the strip I6 has a portion I8 extending around to the front of the sleeve. These two strips are sewed together, forming a front seam I9 and a rear seam 20.
The cuff 2| of each sleeve is provided with an ornamental button wing made out of the cloth of the sleeve. Each button wing is In the shape of a vertical bar-like wing extending laterally outwardly from the sleeve. The top edge 26 of the button wing is inclined downwardly and inwardly. Three buttons 2l are sewed to the button wing.
The button wing is formed as follows;
The strip I5 is extended beyond the seam I9, providing an extension 28, the outer edge of which is turned under. The strip I6 is run parallel to the strip I5 until it curves backwardly forming the aforementioned portion I8. Portion I8, in line with seam I9 takes areverse bend, providing a layer 29 parallel and in engagement with extension 28. The outer edge of layer 29 is turned under, engaging the turned under edge of extension 28, and these turned under edges are sewed together, the sewing being done before the edges are turned under, that is to say, the sewing is done with the sleeve inside out so that only the turned under edges are sewed together.
The buttons 2l are sewed right through the extension 28, layer 29 and portion I8, securing these parts together and preventing the wing from becoming bent in the wrong direction. The wing extends outwardly beyond the adjacent edge of the sleeve. The top and bottom edges of the wings are turned in and sewed similarly to the edges shown in Fig. 4 and no further description thereof is deemed necessary.-
The manner of forming the seam 20 is clearly shown in Fig. 5, the stitches being designated by the numeral 30.
Each sleeve has a hem 3l to the free end of which a strip of tape 32 is sewed, this strip being in turn sewed to the inside of the sleeve, the tape 32 thus protecting the edge of the hem from unravelling, as is clearly shown in Figs. 6 and '7.
By means of this arrangement the lining in the garment sleeve may be entirely eliminated, thus the cost of labor reduced, while a desirable simulation of an outer garment is produced by the provision of these button wings.
While I have illustrated and described the prefererd embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
A garment comprising a body and sleeves, each of said sleeves being formed of a front strip of cloth and a rear strip of cloth, one of the seams therebetween being at the rear of the sleeve and the other of the seams being at the front of the sleeve spaced a short distance from the outer side thereof, and a secured reinforced button a folded part projecting beyond said outer side, the insides of said folded parts located on each sleeve being connected by a seam, said seam rmly securing the position and form of said 5 button Wings.
CHARLES SOLOMON.
