Byy such a modication, theoperator may simply. stop the socket in its uppermost position and both unloading and reloading are greatly facilitated by 'means of the guideway 25 fromY the socket` to the lower tube.
In a preferred embodiment, the device is pro-v vided with electrical connections for automatically rstopping 'rotation of they motor and closing the valve tothe liquid supply when they socket `I'l dfinies' its @Perma position- TO. accbmplish this result, the valve ID in the fluid supply line may be a solenoidor thrustor-operated valve and a solenoid-operated brake may be provided upon the shaft of the motor. In addition, a switch 21 is provided whose two terminals 28 and 29 are adapted to be closed by contact with the outer periphery of the socket l1 at its uppermost position (see Figure l). The arrangement is diagrammatically represented in Figure 3, Thel closing of this switch 21 by the socket I1 causes mentary material comprising a longitudinal memthe main switch 30 connecting the motor and valve circuit to the power supply 3| to be opened, such as by the action of a solenoid 33 in the circuit with the socket switch 21 which retracts a core 34 and thereby permits the main switch 30 to spring open to the position shown in Figure 3. Assuming that the main switch 30 has thus been opened and a fresh batch of cakes has been loaded into the device, the operator starts the machine by closing the main switch 3G by hand or by a foot-operated lever and holding it closed until the socket I1 has passed out of contact with the terminals of the auxiliary switch 21. Closing of the main switch effects opening of the valve l0, operation of the motor H, and a release of the brake 35 such as by operating a solenoid to retract suitable brake shoes from a brake drum on the shaft of the motor in opposition to springs normally tending to cause breaking. Upon completion of a single rotation of the socket l1, the auxiliary switch 21 is closed automatically by socket l1, thereby opening the main switch 30 which causes closing of the valve lll, and braking of the motor shaft.
1f desired, the valve I0. may be replaced by a measuring pump which may be operated by an electric motor automatically controlled in the same manner as the valve lll to start delivery of the liquid upon starting rotation of the cake supporting rod and to stop delivery upon each complete rotation of the rod.
While the device of the invention may be employed to apply any liquid to wound lamentary cakes, such as for bleaching, dyeing, etc., it is particularly adapted to the application of lubricating, softening, and conditioning media or solutions thereof, especially in organic solvents having low surface tension. The device has provision for applying the medium simultaneously from both inside and outside the cakes while moving the cakes relative to the liquid sprays. The result is an efjcient, rapid and uniform impregnation of the cakes with a minimum of labor expenditure, power consumption and loss of materiaL While preferred embodiments of the invention have been disclosed, the description is intended to be illustrative only, and it is to be understood that changes and variations may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
We claim:
1. A device for treating wound cakes of lamentary material comprising a longitudinal member supported adjacent one end only, a single socketed element mounted for rotation about said member adjacent the supported end thereof, and a portable carrier for said cakes consisting essentially of a substantially straight rod `insertable into and removable from the socket for loading and unloading the device.
2. A device for treating wound cakes of filamentary material comprising a longitudinal member supported adjacent one end only, spray means thereon, a single socketed element mountber supported adjacent one end only, spray means thereon, a single socketed element mounted for rotation about said member adjacent the supported end thereof, a portable carrier for said cakes insertable into and removable from the socket for loading and unloading the device, a second longitudinal member having spray means thereon,

4. A device for treating Wound cakes of lamentary material comprising a longitudinal member, a socketed element mounted for rotation about said member, a portable carrier for said cakes insertable into and removable from the socket for loading and unloading the device and means on said longitudinal member for guiding said portable carrier with cakes suspended therearound along said member.
5. A device for treating wound cakes of filamentary material comprising a longitudinal member a socketed element mounted for rotation about said member, a portable carrier for said cakes insertable into and removable from the socket for loading and unloading the device, means for stopping said socket in a predetermined position with respect to said longitudinal member and means on said longitudinal member for guiding said portable carrier with cakes sus.. pended therearound along said member andinto said socket in said predetermined position.
6. A device for treating Wound cakes of dlamentary material comprising a longitudinal member, a socketed element mounted for rotation about said member, a portable carrier for said cakes insertable into and removable from the socket for loading and unloading the device, means for stopping said socket in a position substantially directly above said longitudinal member, and means on the upper surface of said longitudinal member for guiding said portable carrier with cakes suspended therearound along said member and into the socket.
7. A device for treating wound cakes of filamentary material comprising a longitudinal member; spray means thereon, a valve for controlling the ow of liquid to said spray means, a socketed element mounted for rotation about Said member, a portable carrier for said cakes insertable into and removable from the socket for loading and unloading the device, means for stopping said socket in a predetermined position with respect to said longitudinal member, means on said longitudinal member for guiding said portable carrier with cakes suspended therearound along said member and into said socket in said predetermined position and means associated with said stopping means for substantially simultaneously closing said valve when said socket reaches said predetermined position, Y

A device for treating wound cakes of lamentary material comprising a longitudinal member, spray means thereon, a valve for controlling the flow of liquid to said spray means, a socketed element mounted for rotation about said member, a portable carrier for said cakes insertable into and removable from the socket for loading and unloading the device, means for stopping said socket in a predetermined position above said longitudinal member, and means associated with said stopping means for closing said valve.

A device for treating wound cakes of filamentary material comprising a longitudinal member, spray means thereon, a valve for controlling the flow of liquid to said spray means, a socketed element mounted for rotation about said member, a portable carrier for said cakes insertable into and removable from the socket for loading and unloading .the device, means for stopping said socket in a position substantially directly above said longitudinal member, means on the upper surface of said longitudinal member for guiding said portable carrier with cakes suspended thereon along said. member, and means associated with said stopping means for closing said valve.
