MOP-HANDLE.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,049, dated May 1'?, 1859.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, H. NORTON and J. S. B. NORTON, both of Farmington, in the county of Franklin and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mops; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of our invention the parts being adjusted ready for use. Fig. 2, is a side view of ditto showing the position of the parts when the cloth is being wrung.

Similar letters of reference indicate oorresponding parts in the two figures.

The object of this invention is to facilitate the wringing out of the mop-cloth or yarn when the same is suroharged with water, so that said work may not only be thoroughly done but also accomplished without wetting or soiling the hands of the operator.

The invention consists in having one end of the mop-cloth or yarn attached to the end of the handle and the opposite end attached to a slide which is fitted on the handle and so arranged that when the mop is used the slide may be drawn on the handle and secured so that the mop-cloth or yarn may have a folded or doubled position similar to the usual mop-cloths, and when surcharged with water readily distended and wrung dry as hereinafter fully shown and described.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct our invention we will proceed to describe it.

A, represents the handle of the mop, which is of cylindrical form and of any suitable length, and B, is the niopcloth or yarn one end of which is attached to the handle A, the Opposite end being attached to the outer end of a slide C, which is fitted on the handle. The slide C, may be formed of a rod bent so as to have two parallel sides a, a, and an outer end b, the latter having one end of the cloth or yarn B, attached, the inner ends of the sides c, c, being attached to a cross bar c, which is fitted on the handle and allowed to slide freely thereon, the

handle passing through the center of the cross bar c.

On the handle A, near its end a cross bar d, is fitted and secured between pins e, e, which pass transversely through the handle. '.The sides a, a, of the slide C, work in notches in the ends of the cross bar cl, which serves as a guide both to the handle and to the slide.

To the handle A, a feather spring D, is attached, and through the handle A, a short distance from the end of spring D, a pin f, passes transversely. The spring D, retains the cross bar c, back on the handle A, and the pin f, lits in a slot in the cross bar c, preventing the same from turning on the handle, see Fig. l.

yVhen the slide O, is drawn back on the handle A, and secured in such position by the spring D, the mop-cloth or yarn B, is ready for use.

When the mop-cloth or yarn becomes surcharged with water consequent on its legitimate use, the spring D, is pressed inward and the cross bar c, released and the slide shoved outward until the cloth or yarn B, is fully distended as shown in Fig. 2. The Operator still holding the cross bar c, grasps the pin f, or the handle A, near said pin and turns the handle thereby twisting and wringing the cloth or yarn. The slide may then be shoved back to its original position and the mop is again ready for use.

By this invention it will be seen that the cloth or yarn may be wrung dry without wetting or soiling the hands of the operator and the wringing is done with comparative ease and facility as a considerable leverage power is obtained.

Having thus described our invention what we olaiin as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,

Attaching the mop-cloth or yarn B, to the handle A, and to av slide C, fitted on the handle and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
