Description
'(NovModeL) 0. B. CRANE & T. M. PLATT-S.
Marinel-lngine Governor.
No. 240,389. Patented April 19,1881.
I I v 3 EJNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
A oSoAR B. CRANE AND THOMAS M. PLATTS, F NEWARK N. J., ASSIGNORS OF ONE-THIRD TO WILLIS H. HAWES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
" MARINE-ENGINE GOVERNOR u SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,389, dated April 19, 1881.
Application filed December 18, 1880. (No model.) i I To all whom it may concern: Be it known that we, OSCAR B. CRANE and THOMAS M. PLATTS, of Newark, in the county rough sea, the propeller is thrown out of the water; and it consists in providing a gravitygovernor, working by the motion of the ship,
3 in combination with a compound gearing, which together control the action of the steam on the engine by operating a valve in the steam-pipe.
Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of Fig. 1 on line of x or.
V The steam is supplied to the engine through the pipe A. Transversely in this pipe is the regulating-valve B, leaving the hole 0, which,
(1 when the ship is level longitudinally, leaves a free passage for the steam through the pipe; but as the ship changes position this valve tends to close the pipe and out off the steam,
the opening in the pipe changing in relation to the hole in the valve; but as it is onlynec- 3o essary to out OK the steam when the stern of the ship, carrying the propeller, is raised or thrown out of the water, we provide a stop,
D, which prevents the governor from swinging but in one direction past the center, or it is madeto regulate the motion in the direction 5 of the stern.
The gravity-weight E for the governor is pivoted to the frame F, and has extending above the pivota quadrant having a gear, G, working in agear, H,which, with the smaller gear 1, turns 40 loose on the shaft K. The gear I works in the gear L, fixed on the shaft M; and on the same shaft is the fixed gear N, made to work in the fixed gear 0 on shaft K, making a compound gear, to increase the power by lessening the speed.
On the end of shaft K is a fixed gear, P, made to work in a similar gear, Q, on the shaft R, leaving the stem of valve B performing the service above named. o
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a marine-engine governor, the pendulum E, operating by gravity to regulate the valve B, in combination with the compound gear, to increase the power and lessen the speed, when constructed and operating substantially .as described and shown.
OSCAR B. CRANE. THOMAS M. PLATTS.

It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 240,389, granted April 19, 1881, upon the application of Oscar B. Crane and Thomas M. Platts, for an improvement in Marine Engine Governors, the name of the assignee of one third interest was erroneously written and printed therein Willis H. Hawes instead of Willis H. Howes; that the proper corrections have been made in the files and records pertaining to the case in the Patent Ofiiee, and are hereby made in the said Letters Patent. Signed, countersigned, and sealed this fifth day of May, A. D. 1881.
