This invention relates to hinged cover con#` f tainer, and more particularlyto a container formed from paperboard or other suitable ilexible material comprising a box part and a cover part hinged to the box part and adapted to telescope over the open end thereof and having means associated with the cover part and the box part to releasably retain the cover part in closed position and releasably resist opening movement thereof. This application is a continuation, in part, of our co-pending application, Serial No. 451,711, nled July 21, 1942 and issued February 13, 1945, as Patent No. 2,369,387.
To provide a satisfactoryl hin-ged cover container, means should be 'provided to retain the cover part in closed position so that the cover part will not fly open during normal handling of the container'I and desirably the cover part should be such as to permit opening and closing thereof with maximum ease and speed. Where such hinged cover containers are made of metal and similar rigid material, resistance to the opening ofthe cover part is achieved by the substantial frictional contact between the enclosing flanges Iof the cover part andthe walls o1' -the boxpart. However, in the case of hinged cover containers made from paperboard or like ilexlble material, suillcient irictional resistance between the cover iianges and the box side walls to properly retain the cover part inclosed position is lacking, and unless additional resistance means are provided,
the cover part will ily open during normal handling of the container.
There is disclosed in our co-pending application, above referredvto, a hinged cover con-- tainer formed 'of paperboard or like material having abutment means or elements associated with the box part and cover part thereofA which serve to releasably retain the cover part in closed position and releasably resist opening movement thereof. The invention disclosed in this application is directed to certain modiilcations and extensions ot the inventive concept disclosed in said prior filed :zo-.pending application.
In one -iorm of the invention disclosed in this application, a pair o1' hinged abutment elements or abutment aps are provided, one of which is.
hingedfto a panel -of the box part and free to swing about its hinged edge, and the other' of which is hinged to. the adjacent side panel or ilange oi the cover part and tree to swing about its hinged edge. `These hinged abutment ,ele-l 'ments or flaps are provided with co-operating abutment edges which move into abutment when the cover part is raised from closed towards open- 2 position. vContinuing openingv movement of the cover part is resisted by the abutted elements until a lifting torce on the cover part is exerted suillcient to cause iiexingoi' one or more of the 5 side panels of the box part and/or one or more of the side panels, or anges of the cover parttransmitted to such panels through the compressive stress placed on the abutment elements. I'he abutment edges of the abutment elements are retained in abutment, when opening forcev is applied to the cover part, by a lug or projection extending from one of saidabutment elements which overlaps the other abutment element, thus' preventing either of the abutment elements from l5 slipping out of -.edge abutting engagement with the other and passing behind one another.
In another form of the invention, the abutment iiap associated with the cover part is retained in relative fixed position with its abutment edge or edges nevertheless fully exposed for en- :gagement with the co-operating abutment edge or edges of the abutment element or ilap hinged to the adjacent side wall panel o!V the box part.
The cover abutment element. or ilap may be retained in this xed position by making the lug extension of suilicient length toengge a slit or slot extending alongthe inside i'ace of the top wall panel of the cover part, or the lug extension may be designed to interlock with tabs which retain the side wall panels or sections ci the cover part in fixed assembled position.
When the abutment ilap elements are properiy proportioned, in the manner hereinafter more particularly described, the cover part can be swung from its closed position -to openposition only by applying sulclent upward pressure or force to 4the cover part to overcome the resistance tohinging movement oiered by the abutment flaps and the resistance to ilexing oilered by oneor more or the box side panels and/or cover side panels or ilanges, which resistance -to 'opening' continues until the abutment elements g1 naps move out of their `edge-abutted relation- D- Y i Hinged cover containers. constructed in accordance with this invention, provide a packaglng medium for numerous articles otmerchandise. The container itseli.' may be made in numerous attractive shapes and forms and of any 50 length. width or depth desired.
An' object of this invention is to provide an improved hinged covercontalner formed from .paperboard or other iiexible material, having means associated with the b'oxand cover .part 55 thereof to releasably retain cover part 'in 3 closed telescoped position over the box part and operative to releasably resist opening movement of the cover part.
Another object of this invention is to provide a container formed from suitably exible material having a box part with a cover part hinged thereto and adapted to telescope over the open end of the box part, which is provided with means associated with the box and cover parts adapted to releasably retain the' cover part in closed position so as to prevent undesired opening thereof and which nevertheless may be easily and quickly opened and closed, and which also is so constructed that the cover part may y be swung completely away from the open end of the box Apart so as not to interfere with thb insertion or removal of the contents into or from tiie box part.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved hinging cover adapted to be associated with the box part of a container made of flexible material which is attractive and neat in appearance.' strong and sturdy in construction, and serviceable in use. and which may be made to snugly telescope over the box part.
Other objects of this invention will become apparent as the disclosure proceeds.
Although the characteristic features of this invention which are believed to be novel will be particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto, the invention itself, as to its objects and advantages, and the manner in which it may be carried out, may be better understood by referring to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the unassembled cover part hinged to van otherwise fully formed box part showing the abutment elements associted therewith;

In accordance with this invention, the box part a of the container may be of any desired shape or size but normally comprises enclosing side wall panels and a bottom wall panel, which may be formed and secured together in any desired manner. For the purpose of explanation, however, one of the enclosing panels is designated the front wall panel I, the opposite enclosing panel is designated as the rear wall panel 2, and the intermediate enclosing panels' as side wall panels I, providing a tubular body having an open upper end. The enclosing side wall'panelsof the box part may be of any desired length and of amr desired size and proportion. 'I'he particular construction of the enclosing side wall panels and v the bottom panel, as w'ell as their manner oi' assembly, may also be varied as desired. y
One of the enclosing panels, which will herei be designated as the front wall panel I, is provided with an abutment flap 5 hingedly connected thereto at its upper end 6. The cover part b forming a part of the con-A tainer as illustrated in Figs. 1 to v'7, inclusive, comprises a top wall panel III which is hinged to the rear wall panel 2 of the box part along a transversely extending score line I I which defines the top edge of the rear wall panel. The abutment ap I9 is hingedly connected by transversely extending score line to the' front '.ilange section I2 and is so proportioned that it hingedly connected along a passing behind the cover abutment nap I 9, and

'I'he abutment flap I! is free to hinge along its hinge line 20 and is provided with a lug or projection 2I and labutment edges'22 which are adapted to co operate with the abutment edge 8 of the abutment ilap 5 associated with the box part when the cover part is in closed and telescoped position overthe box part.
The assembled cover part b illustrated in Figs. 2 to 7, inclusive, thus comprises a top wall panel I0 hinged to the upper edge of the rear Wall panel 2 of the box part, a front flange section I2, and side wall sections I4 each connected to an endoi' the front flange section I2 along the-'hinge line I5 and to the top wallA panel III by the securing" tab I6. The securing tab I5 may be secured by adhesiveto either the inside face or the outside face of the top wall panel.
The hinged cover container as thus assembled appears as shown in Fig. 2, when the cover part is in open position ready -to receive the merchandise. The merchandise plugP (see Figs. 5 and 6) is inserted into the box part through the open end thereof and the cover part may then be -swung into closed position as shown in Fig. 3. It will be noted that the parts are so proportioned that the front flange or panel I2 of thecover part snugly telescopes over the front wall panel of the vbox part and the side wall sections or panels I4 of the cover part snugly telescope over the sidewall panels 3 oi.' the box part.- The outer free edge Il' of the cover. side panels or section Il may be given a rounded or curvilinear contour to enhance its appearance and usefulness.

In other words, if the box panel I is relatively less stiff and rigid than the corresponding front panel I2 of the cover part the greatest flexing will occur in the box panel I. The degree of resistance to opening will depend, of course, upon the degree of resistance to ilex possessed by the box panels and cover panels and the amount or degree of K fiexing required to permit lthe -cover part to clear the hinging abutment nap 5 and move out of abutment therewith. The length a: o! the hinging abutment ilap 5 must be such as to be subjected to compressive strain between the abutment edges 22o! the cover abutment ap I9 and the front wall panel of the box part to which it is hinged. The length a: of the hinging abutment flap 5 should not however be too great in length to prevent opening oi' the cover part or to place such a strain on the paperboard. and particularly the cover hinging score line II, as to cause rupture or breakage thereof. The box abutment nap 5 and the cover abutment ap I94 are thus so shaped When the cover part is' in closed position, it y will be noted by referring to the cross-sectional view shown in Fig. 5, that the abutment elements -5 and I9 are substantially concealed from view within the cover part, andare so proportioned that the ends 8' of the abutment edge 5 are subv stantially in abutment with the abutment edges 22'of abutment ap I9.. The lug or projection 2| on the abutment ilap I8, however, overlaps the center section of the abutment ilap 5 so that the intermediate edge s" of the abutment flap s 'is not in abutting engagement with the cover abutment flap Il. The resiliency ofthe paperboard and proportioned as to impose suillcient stresses on .the box side panels and cover side panels to achieve the desired resistance to normal opening of the cover part so that the cover part is retained in closed position and will-not be inadvertently opened during normal handling oi.' the container.
There is shown in Figs. 8 to 12, inclusive, a f hinge cover container having a cover partof somewhat modiiled construction. In this form of the invention the side wall sections or panels 24 are hinged to the ends of the top wall panel -III [along score lines 25. An abutment flap 5 is hinged to the upper edge of the front wall panel Iv of the box part along the score line 9.. In this form of the invention the box abutment flap 5 is provided withl a pair of spaced lugs or projections 9 and a free abutment edge 9 extending therebetween. The'free abutment edge 9 is designed to abut the abutment edge 23 of the cover abutment ilap I9 when the cover part is in closed position.
When the hinged cover container has been assembled as shown in Fig. 9, the merchandise plug P is telescoped into the box part through the open end thereof and the cover part then swung into closed position as shown in Fig. l1. thus arranged it will be noted that abutment edge 9 of the box abutment flap 5 is substantiallyA in abutment with the abutment edge 23 of the cover c abutment flap I9, the lugs 9 serving to prevent any part of the cover abutment ilap I9 from working its way behind the box abutment flap 5.
When lifting force is exerted on the cover part,
`the cover abutment :liap I9 will pivot about itshinged line 20, as shown in Figs. 10 and 12. This lifting force causes compressive stress to be exerted onthe hlnging abutment flap I9 lengthwise thereof, which in turn causes inward flexing or bowing ofthe front wall panel I of the box part and/or outward flexing or bowing of the adjacent front wall flange or panel I2 of the cover part. When these panels have'been flexed sufilvclently to permit the hlnglng abutment flap I9 to execute its predestined hinging or ,swinging movement, the resistance to opening movementl of the cover part is released and the cover part may then be swung into f ull open position. It will be appreciated that the length a: of the hlnglng abutment nap I9 must be such that compressive stress is placed thereon and a predetermined flex.. ing of one or more of the cover panels and/or one or more of the box panels must take place. The stiffness or resistance to flexing which the box panels and cover panels possess, determines the degree of resistance to opening of the cover part. Thus the hinging abutment -ilap I9 and the relatively llxedly held box abutment flap 5 are so shaped and proportioned as to impose sufiicient stress on the box and cover side panels to achieve the desired resistance to normal opening of the cover part and retain the cover part in closed position and against inadvertent opening during normal handling of the container.
It will be appreciated that the lugs 9 serve to retain the cooperating abutment edges of the box flap 5 and cover flap I9 in abutment, and while the lugs 9 are shown in Fig. 9 as associated with the box abutment flap 5, a similar result can be accomplished by associating the lugs 9 with the cover abutment flap I9, or by using a single lug'.
in lieu of the lug 2l, to associate a pair of lugs 9 with. the box abutment nap 5 or the cover abutment flap I9 of the container illustrated in Figs. 1 to '7, inclusive. It will thus be appreciated that the drawings are illustrative only, and
a proper functioning of the invention may be fully accomplished by using oney lug 2l or a pair of spaced lugs 9 associated with either the box abutment flap or the cover abutment flap.
There is show'n in Figs. 13 to 1'7, inclusive, a hinged cover container formed' of paperboard or like flexible material, having a cover part wherein the side wall sections 24 are hinged to the opposite ends of the top wall panel III along hinge forming score lines 25, anda securing tab 29 -hinged to each of the side wall sections 24 along a score line 39, the score line 99 being substantially -a straight line continuation of the score line I9 which hingedly connects the front flange section or panel I2 to the top wall panel I9. The securing tabs 29 are separated from the ends of the vfront flange section I2 by a cut line 3|. The oo ver forming part, as shown in Fig. 13, is assembled by folding the side wall sections 24 and the front flange section I2 to a position substantially at right angles with the top wall panel I9, the securing tabs 29 being folded inwardly so as to overlie the inside face of the front flange section I2. The cover abutment flap I9 hinged to the front flange section I2 along the score line 20 is designed to fold over and overlie the inside face of the securing tabs 29, as shown more particularly in Fig. 15. The cover abutment flap I9 is provided with a lug 92 of sumclent length so that the end portion 93 thereof may be inserted into a slit or slot 94 provided in the top wall panel III of the coverv part, as shown in Figs. 15 and 17. In this form of assembly, the abutment flap I9 is firmly held in infolded position and the securing tabs 29 frictionally gripped between the cover abutment flap I9 and the inside face of the front flange section I2 of the cover part. Thus the securing tabs 29 need not be secured by adhesive or other extraneous means to the front flange section I2 of the cover part.
The merchandise plug P is telescoped into the box part of the ycontainer when the cover part is swung into open position as shown in Fig. 15.
When the cover part is swung into closed posl tion, the end portions 9' of the abutment edge 9 of the box abutment flap 5 will substantially abut the abutment edges 22 of the ilxed abutment flap I9. The lug 92 will then overlap the box abutment flap -5 so that' the central part 9" of the abutment edge of flap 5 will neither grip nor pass behind the abutment edges'of the cover abutment flap the manner shown in Fig. 16, and the resilient nature of the flap 5 will maintain the end sections 9' of its abutment edge 9 in position to abut the abutment edges 22 of the cover abutment flap I2 when the cover part is raised.
A lifting force exerted on first brings edges 9 of box abutment flap 5 into abutment with abutment edges 22 of the cover abutment flap I9 and continued lifting force on the cover part places a compressive stress on the box abutment flap 5 lengthwise thereof, which causes a flexing or bowing of the front wall. panel I of the box part and/or the flange front section or panel I2 of the cover part until the Abox abutment iiap 5 has swung clear of the cover part. Thus it will .be noted that the hinging abutment flap 5 and the nxedly held abutment flap I9 are so shaped and proportioned as to impose flexing or bending stress upon the associated side panels of thel box part and cover part, and thereby achieve the desired resistance to opening movement of the cover part.

2. An improved hinged cover container comprising, a box part having enclosing side panels and an open end, a cover part for said open end having an end wall panel hingedly connected to one of the box side panels and connected cover side panels joined to said end wall panel adapted to telescope overother adjacent box side panels, an abutment flap hinged to onev of said other box side panels and extending along the outside face and adjacent to the open end thereof, an abutment flap hinged to the adjacent cover side panel and extending along the inside face thereof, said abutment flaps being substantially wholly contained within the cover part when the cover partis in closed position and being operative to automatically releasably retain the cover part in closed position and releasably resist opening movement thereof, saidabutment flaps having cooperating abutment edges arranged to move into 'abutment and maintain compressive stress on at least one of said flaps during a portion -of the swinging movement of the cover part from closed to open position, one oi' vsaid abutment iiaps having a pair of spaced lugs projecting from an edge thereof adapted to overlap the other abutment flap and effective to cause a bowing distortion of said other abutment ilap whereby the cooperating abutmentv edges. of said abutmentfiaps are retained in firm cooperating abutting engagement during a portion of the swinging movement of the cover part from closed to open position.
3. An improved hinged cover container cornprising, a box part having enclosing side panels and an open end, a cover part for said open end having an end wall panel hingedly connected to one of the boxl side panels land connected cover side panels joined to said end wall panel adapted to telescope over other adjacent box side panels,
an abutment ilap hinged to one of said ,other v box side panels and extending along the outside face thereof, an abutment flap hinged to the adjacent cover side panel and extending along the inside face thereof, said abutment flaps' being substantially wholly contained within the cover part when the cover part is in closed position and being operative to automatically releasably 'retain the cover part in closed position and releasably resist opening movement thereof, said abutment flaps having cooperating abutment edges arranged to move into abutment and main.- tain compressive stress on at least one of saidv ilapsduring a portion of the' swinging movement of the cover part from closed to open position, a lug projecting from said cover abutment y flap adapted to overlap the box abutment tlap and effective to cause a bowing distortion of Asaid box abutment nap whereby the cooperating abutment edges of said abutment flaps are retained in nrm cooperating abutting engagement during a 12 portion of the swinging movement of the cover part from closed to open position.
4. An improved hinged cover container comprising, a box .part having enclosing side panels and an open end, a cover part for said open end having an end wall panel hingedly connected to one of the box side panels and connected cover side panels joined to said end wall panel adapted to telescope over other adjacent box side panels, an abutment flap hinged to one of said other box -side panels and extending along the outside face thereof, an abutment nap hinged to the adjacent cover side panel and extending along the inside `face thereof, said abutment naps being substantially wholly contained within the cover part ,when the cover part is in closed position and being operative to automatically releasably retain the cover part in closed position and releasably resist opening movement thereof, said abutment flaps having cooperating abutment edges arranged to move into abutment and maintain compressive stress on at least one of said flaps during a portion of the swinging movement of the cover part from closed to open position, a lug projecting from said box abutment flap adapted to overlap the cover abutment flap and eective to cause a bowing distortion of said cover abutment flap whereby,I the cooperating abutment edges of said abutment flaps are retained in firm cooperating abutting engagement during a portion of the swinging movement of the cover part from closedto open position.
5. An improved hinged cover container comprising, a box part having enclosing side panels and an open end, a cover part for said open end having an end wall panel hingedly connected to one of the box side panels and connected cover side panels joined to s aid end wall panel adapted to telescope over other adjacent box side panels, an abutment flap hinged to one of said other box side panels and extending along the outside face thereof, an abutment lflap hinged to the adjacent cover side panel and extending along the inside face thereof, said abutment flaps being substantially wholly contained' within the cover part when the cover part is in closed position and being operative to automatically releasably retain the cover part in closed position and releasably resist opening movement thereof, said' -movement of the cover part fromclosed to open position.

An improved hinged cover container comprising, a box part having enclosing side panels and an open end, a cover part for said open end having an end wall p'anel hingedly 'connected to one of the box side panels and connected cover side'panels joined to said end wall panels adapted to, telescope over other adjacent box side panels, an abutment nap hinged to one of said other box side panels and extending along the outside face thereof, an abutment flap hinged to the adjacent cover side panel and extending along the inside face thereof, said abutment flaps 13 being subnantially wholly contained within-the 'r cover part when the cover part is in closed position and being operative to automatically releasably retain the cover part in closed position and releasably resist opening movement thereof. saidabutment ilaps having cooperating abutment edges arranged to move into abutment and maintain compressive stress on at least one oiisaid naps during a portion 'of the swinging move.

An improved hinged cover container formed from paperboard material comprising, a box part deilned by a iront wall panel, a rear wall panel, .intermediate side wall panels connecting said front and lrear wall panels and an open upper end, an abutment ilap hinged to said iront wall panel adjacent said open upper end and norn one of the box side panels, connected cover side panels joined -to said end wall panel adapted 4to telescope over other adjacent box side panels, an abutment ilap hinged to one of said other box side panels and extending along the outside vi'ace and adjacent to the open end thereof, an abutment flap hinged to the adjacent cover side panel and extending along the inside face thereof, a lug element extending from said cover abutment nap retaining said cover abutment flap in substantially ilxed position along'the inside face of said adjacent cover side panel, said abutment flaps being substantially wholly contained withinthe cover part when the cover part is f in closed position and being operative to automatically releasably retain the cover part in closed position and releasably resist opening movement thereof, said abutment naps having mally overlying the outside face of said front wall panel, a cover part for said open end comprising a top wall panel lhingedly connected to -the open end of the rear wall panel of the boxK part, a i'ront i'lange section connected to said top.
