WIND-ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,366, dated April 19, 1881.
Application filed September 9, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BEVARD, of Alexandria, in the county of Licking, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wind-Engines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specitication.
This invention relates to certain improvements in windmills or wind-engines; and it has for its objects to increase the capacity and simplify the construction of such mills or engines and the gearing wherebypoweris transmitted from the engine to the machinery to be driven, and also to regulate the speed and.
power of the wind or driving wheel, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section through the windwheel; Fig. 3, a vertical section of the mill or engine; and Fig. 4, a detached view, showing the mechanism by means of which the gates are opened and closed or controlled to regulate the admission of the wind to the wheel.
The letter A indicates an annular casing, open at its periphery and at its center, and mounted upon uprights B, rising from and supported upon a suitable base, 0. The said casin g, atits center, is provided with upwardly and downwardly extending flanges D, the opening at the center of the annular casing, with the said flanges, forming a cylindrical chamber, in which is located the wind or driving wheel E. The said wheel is mounted upon a vertical shaft, F, journaled at its lower end in a bearing, G, on the base of the apparatus, and at its upperend in a bearing, H, in a crossbar, I, secured to the upper flange D. The said wheel is constructed of a disk, K, having secured to its opposite sides a series of curved blades, L, extending radially from a circular flange, M, to the periphery of the disk. The said wheel is so located in its chamber that the upper and lower halves of the curved blades at the respective sides of the disk will extend into the portions of the wheel-chamber formed by the flanges D, while the intermediate portion of the wheel will lie in that part of the wheel-chamber formed by the space at the center of the annular casing, so that the wind, enterin g at the periphery of the casin g, will strike the said intermediate portion of the Wheel at its periphery, and will find its escape at the opposite sides of the wheel from between the blades, causing the wheel to rotate in its course.
In the annular casing a series of gates, N, are pivoted at points indicated by the letter 0. These gates are tangential to the casing, and each is provided at the bottom with a flange, P, the respective flanges being connected, by means of screws or pins Q passing through apertures R i n the bottom of the casing, with a series of rods, T, which are pivoted at the points 'U to an annulus, V, surrounding loosely the lower flange D, and supported and held in place at its periphery by means of flanged friction-rollers W, but at the same time permitted to turn freely, so as to open or close the gates and regulate the admission of wind to the wheels or cut it off entirely.
The letter A indicates a vertical shaft, stepped in a bearing, B, at the base of the machine, and journaledat its upper end in a bearin g in a cross-bar, 0, located between two of the supporting-standards of the annular casing. The said shaft is hollow, and is provided with slotted lugs D, in which are pivoted arms E, carrying governor-balls F at their lower ends. The upper ends of said arms are bent inward and bear against a shoulder on a loose shaft, Gr, setting in the upper part of the shaft A, the upper end of said shaft G being provided with a collar, H, to which is connected one end of a lever, l, fulcrumed in bearings K, the other end of said lever extending upward and Working looselyin a bracket, L, projecting from the periphery of the annulus, so that when the lever is operated the annulus will be rotated slightly in one direction or the other, thus opening or closing the gates to a greater or less extent. The shaft A has mounted on it a horizontal grooved wheel, M, which connects with a groove, N, or grooved pulley on the main vertical shaft and trans mits motion from said shaft to the grooved Wheel. Thislast-mentionedmechanism,itwill be seen, operates similarly to an ordinary engine-governor, and by regulating theopening of the gates according to the speed of the wind-wheel secures a uniform motion thereto.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-'- The combination, in a Wind mill or engine, of an annular casing having.upward anddownward flanges at its center, and a double wind-whed located in the chamber formed by said flanges and the space at the center of the casing, and a series of pivoted gates mounted in the casing, with mechanism for operating the same simultaneously, substantially as specified.
