relates to devices for automaticall and separately discharging from tanks or receptacles forming a part of a liquid dispensing system liquid fuels of different specific gravities or, even more specifically, the liquid fuel and water which may have collected in the tank.
The present invention is specifically illustrated in connection with a service station pump or dispenser for delivering gasoline from a supply tank. The invention in certain of its features is capable of use with other types of liquid reservoirs, receptacles or containers and other types of liquid supplying or delivering systems. Among the objects of the present invention are to provide in a liquid fuel dispensing or delivery system having a tank or other receptacle containing liquid fuel, means for drawing the liquid fuel from said tank and for discharging the liquid fuel through the liquid dispensing or delivery line, wherein means is provided in association with such dispensing or delivery line for causing, when the liquid drawing means is putinto operation and when the dispensing or delivery line is closed, the creation of a sufficient pressure in the line automatically to initiate the operation of means for withdrawing from the tank the water accumulated in the bottom thereofand to discharge it therefrom, and whereby, as the dispensing or delivery of the liquid fuel is initiated, the operation of the water withdrawing means is suspended.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a system of the above stated character a water pump and control means which, when a suflicient, amount or all of the water has been discharged from the tank, automatically stops the operation of the water pump and causes or perleum fuel in said tank passes through the liquid dispensing line during a dispensing operation, and in which tank water is adapted to separate at the bottomfof the tank receiving the liquid 'p'etroleum fuel, and wherein means is provided 2 in association with the tank and the dispensing line including a relatively smaller chamber adapted to receive the separated water and wherein when the water level in said chamber rises to a predetermined level the water will be discharged from said chamber to a point outside of said line and tank, together with means, when the water rises to a predetermined higher level,
the pumping means for keeping liquid flow through said dispensing line is stopped.
Yet another object of the invention resides in the provision of means in association with the foregoing to cause the water to rise rapidly in said chamber during dispensing for a relatively small change in the amount of water separated in said tank, whereby to use the rapid rise of said water to prevent the flow of separated water into and through said dispensing line.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of means for utilizing the rise of water in said relatively smaller chamber to a predetermined height therein for discharging water to a point outside of the dispensing system when the pump is in operation, and also to provide means, when the water rises to a higher point in said chamber, to completely stop the pump from operation.
Yet another object of the invention resides in providing automatic mechanism operable, when an excess of water accumulates in the liquid supply or containing tank, for precluding the withdrawal of any such water by the liquid fuel discharging pump, and if the liquid dispensing valve is opened under these conditions, for automatically stopping the pump and/or operating a signal alarm or light to apprise the operator of the extraordinarily high level of water in the tank.
An additional object of the invention resides in providing, in association with the above mentioned mechanism, automatic means for restarting the liquid fuel pump and/ or the water pump upon closing the dispensing control valve, whereby to discharge this excess of accumulated water.
These and other objects of the invention will be apparent from a perusal of the following specificationwhen taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1, 2, 3 and 4 show an embodiment of the invention applied to a service station pump wherein the various figures show the apparatus under difierent conditions of operation;
Figure 5 is an enlarged view partly in cross section of the automatic water pump unit; and
\, Figure 6 is an enlarged View partly in section of a float and its controlled valves forming a part of the invention.
A above stated, the present invention is illustrated specifically in connection with a service station pump having a tank for its source of supply and an upstanding housing in which is located the main dispensing line, which depends into the bottom of the tank for withdrawing the gasoline or other liquid fuel therefrom. In the line is disposed a motor driven pump for drawing gasoline from the source of supply and forcing it through the dispensing line, a liquid displacement meter in the line on the discharge side of the pump, an air separator, and a liquid level sight gauge. In addition, the terminus of the dispensing line comprise-s any type of flexible hose having a liquid dispensing nozzle provided with a manually controlled valve. These elements are the standard elements of a service station pump.
In the operation of these service station pumps on relatively humid days the air, which enters the vent pipe of the underground tank to displace the liquid being drawn therefrom through the dispensing line, is suddenly chilled, so that the moisture therein is precipitated or deposited on the walls of the underground tank and after a time produces a relatively large volume of collected water which, because of its greater specific gravity than the liquid fuel, settle to the bottom of the tank. This water is objectionable. The present device provides means for automatically discharging this water from the underground tank and in a manner such that no gas- 7 oline will be discharged along with the water and no water Will be dispensed along with'the gasoline.

depend downwardly through the base I of the pump into an underground tank 8, which is adapted to hold a quantity of a liquid of desired specific gravity, such, for instance, as gasoline or other liquid fuel for internal combustion engines. The water accumulating in the tank collects below the body of gasoline and is represented by the heavier dash line in Figures 1 to 4. Disposed in the tank 8 is a float valve chamber 9 attached to the lower end of the suction pipe orportion N3 of the dispensing line. This pipe I!) is provided with any type of check valve l I adapted to open upwardly to permit the passage of liquid through the pipe H], but closes the pipe when moved in the opposite direction. The upper portion of the pipe I8 is attached to a pump l2 of any convenient type for drawing gasoline from the tank and for forcing it through the dispensing line in a manner hereinafter described. The liquid discharged from pump 52 passes through a conduit 13, preferably, in the present instance, to the combined air relief and sight gauge formed by the cylinder 5, from which it passes by means of pipe I4 to a liquid displacement meter l5. The discharge side of the meter is connected as by means of pipe E3 to a flexible hose I'L on the end of which is attached the 4 customary nozzle l8 having a manually actuated nozzle valve. The nozzle valve i here shown as supported upon a stationary hook l9 and has associated therewith a switch control lever 28 controlling a switch 2| in the control circuit of the motor for the main pump I2.
The various elements or mechanisms of a service station pump are in certain instances shown schematically to facilitate the understanding of the present invention. Attached to the side of the upper portion of the pipe 10 of the dispensing line is a Sylphon or bellows 2| adapted to control a two-way switch bar 22 for closing the contacts 23 Or the contacts 24, depending upon the position of the switch bar 22. Wires Z5 and 26 connect the electric power line to the circuits of the service station pump. The electric motor 21 is shown mounted on the top of the gasoline dispensing pump l2 and drives the same by means of a belt 28. The witch 2|, heretofore describedis a manually controlled switch in the circuit of the motor 21, and the switch contact 24 is connected in series with the switch 2|. The switch contact 24 is normally closed. In the electric circuit is a light bulb or other electric signal 2.) controlled by the switch contact 23, hereinafter more fully described.
In the present instance, the air separator and sight gauge 5 have been shown as a combined apparatus. They comprise a fioat 30 shown as having attached thereto a rod 31, which provides valve 32 and 33 for closing upper and lower valve seats. The float 30 floats in the liquid in the chamber, specifically gasoline or other liquid fuel, the level of which is normally sufficient in height to cause the valve 32 to contact the valve seat 34 and to prevent passage of air or liquid past the valve seat. The downward movement of this float, upon an accumulation of air in the cylinder 5, not only permits air to be discharged but closes the lower valve 33 so that liquid may not pass through the pipe 14 to the meter l5 or the dispensing nozzle. Upward movement of the float prevents further discharge of air, closes the system to atmosphere, and opens the pipe l4.
Any type of air separator may be utilized in connection with this invention and any type of sight indicator may likewise be used.
The details of construction of the lower float chamber, indicated at 3 in Figure 1, are best shown in Figure 6, wherein the housing or cylinder 35 is soldered to a bushing 36, which bushing, in turn, is threadedly connected to the lower end of the dispensing line or suction pipe Hi. In the lower portion of the bushing 36 is located a valve seat 31 which cooperates with a Valve 38 attached to the top of a float 39. The valve. 38, when engaging its seat 3'1, prevents any liquid, and particularl water, from being drawn into the main dispensing line during the dispensing operation of the pump. In short, it comes into action when an unusually large volume of water has collected in thebottom of the underground tank and might, otherwise, be sucked into the dispensing linedlil by the main gasoline, pump. On the lower side of the float 39 is securely at.- tached a needle valve 40. This float is so weighted that it isbuoyant in water but not in gasoline. and rests upon the seat of the valve 40 or is buoyed up by water accumulated infthe tank.
The lower wall portion of the housin or cylinder 3 5 is provided with numerous small holes 4| adapted to permit water to passtherethrough and to enter the lower partof the valve and float housing 35.
j Disposed in the side wall of the housing and considerably above the location of the holes 4| are'aseries of holes 42, through which the gasoline orother liquid fuel is adapted to pass from the tank into the interior of this housing. By placing these holes 42 sufliciently high, any danger of Water passing into this upper portion of the housing 35 is precluded, especially so since the float 39 is so weighted that it floats in water but not in gasoline. It is to be noted that the needle valve 48 is adapted to control the flow of liquid through the small coupling 43 connected to the lowermost portion of the housing 35, and that this lowermost portion receives through the holes 4| the water that collects in the bottom of the tank. These holes 4| allow liquid to enter or drain from the lowermost portion of the housing 35, as conditions may require.
A pipe 44 connects the coupling 43 to the inlet passage 45 of a water pump 46, the details of which are shown in Figure 5. This pump 46 is preferably shown as a Sylphon or bellows the closedend of which is connected by a connecting rod 41 to an eccentric pin 48 on a shaft 49. Means is provided for driving this water pump 46 from a power actuated source, specificall from the motor driving main pump I2; In order to accomplish this and to control the connection of the pump 46 to the motor, there is provided a T-coupling 50 having a tube connecting the suction side of the pump 46 to a Sylphon or bellows 52. The Sylphon or bellows is adapted to move a spacing or control rod 53. The discharge side of the pump isnormall closed by a spring pressed, outwardly opening valve 54, so
that any liquid which is forced by the pump past this valve is discharged through the tube 55.
A ball valve 56 is provided in the inlet passage of the water pump 46 for preventing return flow. The shaft 51 of the main gasoline dispensing pump I2 has attached to it a driving friction wheel 58, and attached to the shaft 49 is a larger friction wheel 59 for cooperation with the friction-wheel 58. Shaft 49 is supported by a shiftable carriage 60 having a shaft portion received in or passing through a guide portion of a bracket '6I; On the upper end of this carriage 60 is a spring retainer 62 held by a lock nut 63 threaded on the upper end of the shaft portion of the carriage. A compression spring 64 normally holds the shaft 49 and the associated friction wheel 59 in an upper position out of contact with the friction wheel 58. Mounted on the upper side of this bracket 6| is a substantially cup-shaped casing 65, which connects by means of a pipe 66 with the portion I3 of the dispensing line, so that the pressure in this portion of the dispensing line is transmitted to the interior of the casing 65.
I ASylphon or bellows 61' is disposed within this casing 65, and the openend of the bellows may be sealed in any suitable manner to the upper shelf of the bracket 5|. A rod 68 has a head which contacts the closed, upper end of the bellows and i engaged by one end of a compression spring 69, the other end of which is supported on brackett I. This spring urges the rod 68 to upper position, as shown in Figure 5. A spring In connected to an upright portion of the bracket 6| meme outer end of the bellows 62 urges and normally holds the spacing or control rod 53 between the lower end of the rod 69 and the upper end ofthe carriage 69. This spacing or control rod 53 is guided in an enlarged slot II of the brack t I w Operation Figure 1 shows the apparatus with water present in the bottom of the tank 8, the water being of sufficient amount to raise the float 39 to an intermediate position in its enclosing chamber 35. Since the nozzle I8 is On the hook l9, the nozzle or main switch 2| holds the motor circuit open. The switch contacts 24 are closed due to the fact that the bellows 2| is normally extended and holds the switch bar 22 to the right. Hence, in this position, which is the normal stand-by or idle position of the dispenser, the parts of the automatic water pumping system are in the positions shown in Figure 5 which shows the pump motor circuit closed.
Referring now to Figure 2, the nozzle is shown as having been removed from its hook, so that the switch 2| is closed. The electric motor 21 for the main pump I2 now operates. The pump I2 is of the usual type, having a valve controlled or loaded by-pass so that, when the nozzle valve is closed and the pump is operating, the pump continuously by-passes the liquid at a pressure substantially greater than the normal dispensing pressure. However, when the nozzle valve is opened the pressure in the dispensing line on the discharge side of the pump decreases and the bypass Valve closes. Therefore, when the main pump l2 operates with the nozzle valve closed, and due to the by-passing action, an excessive pressure is created in the pipe I3 and the rest of the dispensing line between the pump and the nozzle valve. The bellows 61 and the spring 69 are adjusted so that this excessive pressure in the pipe I3 during the bypassing period, causes the bellows 61 to collapse or be compressed and to force the rod 68 downwardly. Downward movement of this rod 68 causes a downward movement of the free end of the spacing mechanism or control interlock 53, which, in turn, forces the carriage 60 downwardly, thereby forcing the friction wheel 59 into contact with the friction wheel 58. Since the main pump shaft 51 is already rotating, power is transmitted from it to shaft 49 by these friction wheels. The shaft 48 being eccentrically connected to drive shaft 49, the connecting rod 41 reciprocates and causes compression and expansion of the bellows water pump 46. When the water pump bellows is compressed, pressure is created in chamber 15, causing valve 54 to yield and pass liquid to discharge pipe 55. Hence, in this operation water previously drawn from the lower portion of the gasoline tank 8 is discharged through the pipe 55, which may carry the discharged water to any desirable point near to, or remote from, the housing of the service station equipment. When the water pump bellows 46 is expanded, a vacuum isformed in the chamber I5, so that valve 54 closes and valve 56 opens. Since float valve 40 is open, water is drawn by the water pump 46 through the pipe 44 into the chamber I5, through the passage I6 from the chamber 45. When water is Present in sufficient quantity to raise float 39, only a normal suction pressure or vacuum is created by the water pump in the pipes 44 and 5|. The spring I0 is adjusted so that this normal ,vacuum created by water pump 46 does not noticeably contract or collapse the bellows 52. Thus-there is provided in association with the manually operable nozzle valve, control means for selectively rendering the gasoline pump effective and ineffective to force gasoline through the dispensing line and simultaneously rendering the water pump ineffective to discharge water through said discharge line when said gasoline pump is effective and to render said water pump effective to discharge water through said discharging line when said gasoline pump is ineffective. 7
If the nozzle valve is allowed to be closed a sufiicient length of time, as above described, this water pumping action will continue until the water is substantially all drained from the underground tank, at which time the float 39 reaches its lower position closing the lower valve 46. Such a condition is shown in Figure 3, where the water has been pumped from the underground tank until the valve 40 has closed. When valve 45 is closed while the pump 46 is running, the pump creates an excessive vacuum in the line 44. The excessive vacuum in the line 44 is transmitted through pipe to bellows 52, and this vacuum is sulncient to overcome the spring ll], causing the contracting of the bellows 52. This contractionwithdraws the spacer bar or control interlock 53 from between the rod 68 and the carriage fill. This rod 68 is provided with a collar 1?, which serves as a stop when it strikes the bottom of the recess 78 in the bracket Bl. The removal of the spacer or control interlock 53 allows the carriage 6i to rise under the action of the spring 54 to withdraw the wheel 59 from the driving wheel 58 and stop the pump 46. The pump I2 continues to run so that gasoline can now be dispensed by opening the nozzle I8.
Gasoline, however, can be supplied to a customers car before all the water is discharged from the underground tank. For instance, should the nozzle be opened while the water pump 46 is operating, the pressure in the pipe I3 will be reduced, allowing bellows 6'! to expand and permit the spring 69 to raise the friction wheel 59 from the driving wheel 58; thus the water pump is stopped by, or in response to, the opening of the nozzle valve. However, when the nozzle valve is again closed, the pump I2 by-passes the gasoline at a higher pressure in the pipe [3 and the bellows 61 reconnects the pump 46 to the driving wheel 58 and the pump 48 resumes its water discharging function. If the nozzle is removed from its hook, closing the switch 2l when considerable water, i. e. more than at an intermediate level as hereinbefore discussed, is present in the underground tank, so that the water level holds the float 39 in elevated position, the water pump 46 is placed in operation in response to the higher by-pass pressure in the pipe l3, as, described above. If the nozzle valve is then opened, the water pump 46 is stopped and gasoline is drawn into the suction line through holes 42 and a restricted annular area about the raised float. When the float 39 rises to a predetermined point the velocity of the gasoline flowing through this annular restricted area causes the float 39 to rise rapidly and, by means of the valve 38 carried thereby suddenly closes the passage to the suction pipe. vents water from being sucked into the dis'pensing line, for the valve 38 is closed by the increased velocity of the gasoline rather than by the" level of the water alone. an excessive vacuum is created in the suction pipe 10, and the bellows 2| is contracted or collapsed to shift the connecting bar 22 to the left, thereby breaking the contacts 24 of the motor circuit and makin the contacts 2 3 of the signal light circuit. The closing of the switch 2 3' allows current to flow through the bulb or electric signal 29', which, therefore, serves as a signal to the attendant that water is present in the tank orcontainer in such an amount that it must be discharged before further dispensing of delivery of liquid fuel can be accomplished; In order to correct this situation and resume dispensingor delivery of the liquid fuel, the attendah-t need only to close the nozzle valve and give-the system sufiicient time to equalize the pressure and then discharge the water. The closing of the nozzle valve under these conditions permits the pressure to increase in the suction pipe after a certain period of time (since the prime I2 is stopped) and the motor circuit is reestablished at the contacts 24. 'I'hepump l2 now bypasses the gasoline at a, higher pressure in the pipe l3 so that the bellows 61 connects the friction wheels 58 and 59 and causes the pump 46 to operateto discharge the water from the tank. As long as the nozzle valve is closed and the nozzle is off the hook l9, this pump continues to operate until the nozzle is placed on the hook or the water level is lowered to such a point that the float valve 40 closes and the bellows 52 withdraws the control bar 53, as in Figure 3. If the water accumulates in the tank sufficiently to close the valve 38 against its seat 31 before any attempt is made to dispense gasoline, the situation can be corrected only by using other means to first pump out sufficient water from the tank to lower the water to a level permitting this valve to open. Thereafter, on closing the switch 2| while the nozzle valve is still closed, the systemwill condownwardly by an adjustable spring and normally held against an inner annular flange of the coupling casting for the air discharge pipe 8|. This permits expansion of the liquid in the system while the system is idle.
It is understood that while the present invention is'illustrated in the case of an underground supply tank, the inventionis equally adaptable to supply tanks of any desired type and irrespective of their location above or below ground. It is also to beunderstood that the invention is not necessarily confined to the segregation and discharge of water from liquid fuel. or petroleum product but is likewise adaptable for the segregation and independent discharge of liquids of different specific gravities.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure b Letters Patent is: I
1. Ina device of the class described, the combination of a tank adapted to contain fluids of difierent specific gravities, a dispensing line adapted to be connected to said tank, pumping means connected to said dispensing line for causing liquid of lighter. specific gravity-to flow from said tank through said'line, means for controlling the dispensing of said liquid through s'aidlinaa said discharge conduit liquid of heavier specific gravity, means operated by one of the liquids as the amount thereof in said tank varies for preventing the discharge of liquid of lighter specific gravity from said tank through said discharge conduit and the liquid of heavier specific gravity through said dispensing line, and pressure responsive instrumentalities connected to said dispensing line and operated by a variation of pressure therein for controlling the operation of said second pumping means.
2. In a device of the class described, in combi nation with a tank adapted to contain two nonmiscible liquids of relatively different specific gravities, a dispensing line having a liquid inlet in said tank for withdrawing liquid of lighter specific gravity therefrom and having a dispensing valve, a liquid discharge line connected to said tank and having a liquid inlet therein for withdrawing liquid of heavier specific gravity from said tank, a first pumping means connected to said dispensing line for withdrawing liquid of lighter specific gravity from said tank therethrough, a second pumping means connected to said liquid discharge line for withdrawing liquid of heavy specific gravity from said tank, control means for rendering said second pumping means effective or inelfective, and a device responsive to the opening and closing of the dispensing valve for rendering said control means effective upon closing of the dispensing valve and ineffective upon opening of the dispensing valve.
3. In a device of the class described, in combination with a dispensing line adapted to dispense a liquid petroleum product, said line terminating in a dispensing nozzle, pumping means associated with said line for forcing the liquid through said line during a dispensing operation, valve means in said line for controlling the dispensing operation, means forming a chamber connected to said line, said chamber forming a reservoir for the liquid petroleum product adapted to flow through said line, and said chamber being adapted to hold beneath the petroleum a stratum of collected water, a water discharge line having a water inlet associated with said chamber, control means associated with said chamber and with said water and dispensing lines and automatically operated by the rise in level of the water in said chamber, means for actuating said first mentioned pumping means, a second pumping means associated with said water discharge line, means for actuating said second mentioned pumping means including controlling means therefor, and devices actuated by pressure conditions in said dispensing line and in said water discharge line for actuating said control means for controlling the operation of said water pump.
4. In a device of the class described, in combination with a dispensing line adapted to dispense a liquid petroleum product, pumping means associated with said line for dispensing petroleum product therethrough during a dispensing operation. valve means in said line for controlling the dispensing operation, means connected to said line forming a reservoir for the liquid petroleum. product, said reservoir being adapted to hold collected water beneath the petroleum product, a water discharge line connected to the reservoir, power means for actuating said first mentioned pumping means. water pumping means associated with said water discharge means, and means actuated by pressure conditions in at least one of said lines for starting and stopping said water pumping means.
5. In a device of the class described for dis pensing liquid petroleum product from a reservoir which may contain an accumulation of water, said device comprising a dispensing line connected to said reservoir for dispensing the liquid petroleum product, pumping means connected to said line for dispensing the liquid petroleum product through said line, valve means in said line for controlling the flow of liquid petroleum product through said dispensing line, a water discharge line connected to said reservoir, means including a water pump connected to said water discharge line for discharging water from the reservoir through said Water discharge line, and means responsive to the opening and closing of said valve means for rendering said water discharging means ineffective to discharge the water when said valve means is opened and effective to discharge the Water when said valve means is closed.
6. In a device of the class described for dispensing liquid petroleum product from a reservoir which may contain an accumulation of water, said device comprising a dispensing line adapted to be connected to said reservoir for dispensing the liquid petroleum, pumping means connected to said line for forcing liquid petroleum through said line during a dispensing operation, valve means in said line for controlling the dispensing operation, a water discharge line adapted to be connected to said reservoir, a second pumping means connected to said Water discharge line, and means responsive to the pressure of the petroleum product through said dispensing line for automaticall stopping the water pumping means.
'7. In a device of the class described, in combination with a dispensing line adapted to dispense a liquid petroleum product, a dispensing valve in said line for controlling the dispensing flow of liquid petroleum through said line, a supply reservoir connected to said line for holding the liquid petroleum product to be dispensed and in which reservoir water may accumulate, pumping means in said line between said valve and reservoir for dispensing liquid petroleum through said line when said valve is open, a water discharge line connected to said reservoir, water pumping means connected to said water discharge line, means operated by said reservoir as the level thereof in said reservoir varies for controlling said water pumping means, and means connected to said dispensing line between said valve and said liquid petroleum pumping means for automatically rendering said water pumping means ineffective upon the occurrence of a dispensing flow through said dispensing line and rendering said water pumping means effective upon stoppage of the dispensing flow through said line.
'8. In a device of the class described for dis.
pensing liquid petroleum products having a reservoir which may contain an accumulation of water, said device comprising a dispensing line adapted to be connected with said reservoir for dispensing the liquid petroleum product, pumping means connected to said line for dispensing the liquid petroleum through said line, valve means in said line for controlling the dispensing operation, a water discharge line adapted to be connected to said reservoir, water pumping means connected to said water discharge line, means for rendering said water pumping means effective and said liquid petroleum pumping means ineffective upon closure of the valve means in the dispensing line, and means controlled by the liquids in said reservoir for rendering said water pumping means ineffective when the reservoir 11 does not contain water to a predetermined level above the bottom thereof.
9. In a device of the class described, a supply reservoir adapted to contain a liquid petroleum product to be dispensed and in which reservoir water may accumulate, a dispensing line adapted to be connected to. said reservoir to dispense the liquid petroleum product, a dispensing valve in said line for controlling the dispensing flow of liquid petroleum through said line, pumping means connected to said line for forcing the liquid petroleum through said line when said valve is open, a water discharge line connected to said reservoir, water pumping means connectd to said water discharge line, means connected to said dispensing line and operated by pressure of liquid therein for automatically rendering said water pumping means ineffective during a dispensing flow of liquid petroleum through said dispensing line and rendering said water pumping means eifective upon stoppage of the dispensing flow through said line, and means operated by the water as the level thereof in said reservoir varies for rendering the liquid petroleum pumping means ineffective.
10. In a device of the class described, in combination with a dispensin line adapted to dispense a liquid petroleum product, said line having a dispensing valve, pumping means connected to said line for causing liquid to flow through said line during a dispensing operation, means forming a, chamber connected to said line, said chamber forming a reservoir for the petroleum product to be dispensed and in which reservoir water may accumulate beneath the liquid petroleum, a, water discharge line connected to said chamber, water pumping means connected to said water discharge line, means for preventing operation of the water pumping means during a dispensing operation, and means automatically operated during a dispensing operation and in response to a predetermined level of Water in said chamber for stopping the flow of the liquid petroleum through said dispensing line.
11'. In a device of the class described, in combination with a dispensing line adapted to dispense a liquid petroleum product, pumping means associated with said line for forcing the liquid pumped through said line during a dispensing operation, means forming a chamber connected to said line, said chamber forming a reservoir for the petroleum productadapted to flow through said line, and said chamber beingladapted to hold beneath the petroleum product a stratum of collected water, a water discharge line having a water inlet associated with said chamber, water pumping means associated with said water discharge line, manually operated control means for opening and closing said dispensing line to the flow of liquid petroleum through said line, automatic control means operated by Water in said reservoir-as the level thereof in said reservoir varies for stopping the flow of petroleum product through said dispensing line, and means for automatically actuating said water pumping means upon the stoppage of flow through said dispensing line by operation of one of said control means.
12. In a device of the class described, in combination with a dispensing line adapted to dispense a liquid petroleum product, said line having a dispensing valve, pumping means connected to said line for forcing liquid through said line during a dispensing operation, means forming a chamber connected to said line, said chamber forming a reservoir for the petroleum product to accumulate beneath the liquid petroleum, a water discharge line connected to said chamber, water pumping means connected to said water discharge line, means-operated by a predetermined level of water in said chamber for stopping the flow of petroleum product through said dispensing line when said dispensing valve is open, and means controlled by the subsequent closure oi the dispensing valve for actuating said water pumping means.
13. In a device of the class described for dispensing liquid petroleum product from a reservoir which may contain an accumulation of water, said device comprising in combination with a dispensing line adapted to be connected to said reservoir for dispensing the liquid petroleum product, a dispensing nozzle having a valve in said line, a support for the nozzle, pumping means connected to said line for forcing liquid through said line during a dispensing operatic-n, means for starting and stopping the pumping means as the nozzle is placed on or removed from the support, a water discharge line connected to said reservoir, water pumpin means connected to said Water discharge line, means operable in response to a, predetermined level of the water in said reservoir when the valve is opened while the nozzle is removed from its support for stopping the flow of petroleum product through said dispensin line, means controlled by closure of the valve.
in the dispensing line while the nozzle is removed from its support for actuating said water pumping means, and means operated by the nozzle as it is placed on its support rendering both said pumping means ineffective.
14. In a dispensing device for gasoline and other petroleum product, in combination with a reservoir adapted to hold a quantity of liquid, a dispensing line connected to said reservoir and having a nozzle, a dispensing valve in said line, means for causin liquid to be dispensed from said reservoir through said line when said dispensing valve is open, a support for said nozzle, a water discharge. line connected with said reservoir, means in said line. for discharging water therethrough from said rees rvoir, means automatically actuated by the removal of the nozzle from its support for rendering said discharging means effective to discharge water through said discharging line and means for rendering said water discharging means ineffective upon opening of a d, dis e si a 15. In a liquid dispensing device, in combination with a reservoir adapted to hold a quantity of liquid petroleum product, a dispensing line connected thereto, pumping means connected to said dispensing line for pumping petroleum product therethrough, a motor for driving said pumping means, a control valve in said dispensing line, said pumping means having a load by-pass for Icy-passing the liquid petroleum product when the valve is closed, a water discharge line connected with said reservoir, water pumping means for said Water discharge line, a releasable driving connection between said water pumping means and said motor for driving said Water pumping means when said first mentioned pump- 13 petroleum product and an underlying stratum of water, a, dispensing line for petroleum product connected with said receptacle, means for pumping petroleum product from said receptacle through said dispensing line, a separate water discharging line connected to said receptacle, separate pumping means for pumping water from said receptacle through said water discharge line, control means for selectively rendering said petroleum product pumping means effective and ineffective to force the petroleum product through said dispensing line and means responsive to said control means for rendering said water pumping means ineffective to discharge water through said discharging line when said petroleum product pumping means is effective and effective to discharge water through said discharging line when said petroleum product pumping means is ineffective, and means actuated by the water in said receptacle as the level thereof in said receptacle varies, means cooperating with saidwater actuated means for rendering the water pumping means ineffective to pump the water through said discharging line when the water is at a low level to prevent said control means from rendering said water pumping means eifective at such water level and additional means cooperating with said water actuated means for rendering the petroleum product pumping means ineffective when the water is at a high level to prevent said control means from rendering said petroleum product pumping means effective when the water is at such high level.
17. In a device of the class described, a tank adapted to hold a quantity of liquid petroleum product and in which tank water may accumulate beneath said liquid petroleum product, a dispensing line connected to said tank for dispensing the liquid petroleum product therefrom,
a dispensing control valve in said line, a first pumping means in said line for withdrawing the liquid petroleum product from said tank and for forcing said.product through the line when the line is open, said pumping means having a by-pass permitting by-passing of the liquid petroleum product at a higher dispensing line pressure when said dispensing valve is closed, said dispensing line terminating in a dispensing nozzle, a water discharge line connected to said tank, a second pumping means connected to said water discharge line for discharging water from said tank, means for driving said first and said second pumping means, means for renderingsaid driving means effective to drive said first pump- -ing means, pressure responsive control means connected to said dispensing line and operated by the pressure of the liquid in said dispensing line for automatically rendering said driving means effective to drive said second pumping means during by-passing of the first pumping means and ineifective to drive the second pumping means when the dispensing valve is open.
18. In a device for dispensing liquid from a tank, adapted to contain a supply of said liquid and in which water may accumulate beneath said liquid, said device comprising a dispensing line adapted to be connected to said tank, a pump in said line for causing the liquid to be dispensed to flow through said line. a valve controlling the flow of liquid through said line, a water discharge line connected to said tank, a pump in said water discharge line for forcing the water from said tank through said line, means operated by the water in said tank as the level thereof varies for closing said water discharge line when the water is below a predetermined level in said tank and for closing said dispensing line when the water is above a predetermined level in said tank, means for rendering said water pump ineffective when the control valve is open and for rendering said water pump effective when the valve is closed, and means responsive to the closing of the Water discharge line for rendering said Water pump ineffective when the water is below the predetermined level in the tank.
19. In a device for dispensing gasoline or other liquid petroleum product, the combination of means forming a dispensing line having a dispensing valve therein to control the flow of such liquid product therethrough, a container ,connected to said line adapted to hold a quantity of gasoline or other petroleum product and an underlying segregated stratum of water, pumping means associated with said line for causing the flow of gasoline or other petroleum product therethrough and through said dispensing valve, a water pump having an inlet connected with said container for discharging water therefrom, and means automatically operative upon the closure of said dispensing valve for actuating said water pump to discharge water from said container, said last named means including mechanism operable to stop the pumping of said water upon the initiation of dispensing flow through said dispensing valve.
20. In a device for dispensing gasoline or other liquid petroleum product, the combination of means forming a dispensing line having a dispensing valve therein to control the flow of gasoline or other petroleum product therethrough, a container connected to said line adapted to hold a quantity of gasoline or other petroleum product and an underlying segregated stratum of Water, pumping means associated with said line for causing the flow of gasoline or other petroleum product therethrough and through said dispensing valve, a bypass line associated with said pumping means and operable when said pumping means is in operation and said dispensing valve is closed for bypassing the liquid in said dispensing line around said pump, water pumping means connected with said container and pressure responsive control means connected to the dispensing line and operated by pressure conditions therein created by the operation of said bypass for automatically rendering said water pumping means effective to pump water from said container during the circulation of gasoline or other petroleum product through said bypass line and to render said Water pumping means inefiective to pump water from said container upon the opening said dispensing valve.
21. In a device for dispensing gasoline or other petroleum product, the combination of means forming a dispensing line having a dispensing valve therein to control the flow of gasoline or other petroleum product therethrough, a container connected to said line adapted to hold a quantity of gasoline or other petroleum product and an underlying segregated stratum of water, pumping means associated with said line for causing the flow of gasoline or other petroleum product therethrough and through said dispensing valve, a water pump having an inlet connected with asid container for pumping water therefrom whereby to prevent said Water from being pumped through said dispensing line by said gasoline pump, means automatically operative upon the closure of said dispensing valve for actuating said Water pump to discharge water from said container and including mechanism operable for causing the cessation of said pumping during dispensing flow through said dispensing valve, and means additionally operative when said dispensing valve is closed for rendering said water pump ineffective to pump water from said container after said pump has discharged a predetermined volume of water from said container.
22. In a liquid dispensing device, the combination of means forming a dispensing line having a dispensing valve therein to control the flow of gasoline or other petroleum product therethrough, a container connected to said line adapted to hold a quantity of gasoline or other petroleum product and an underlying segregated stratum of water, pumping means associated with said linefor causing the flow of gasoline or other petroleum product therethrough and through said dispensing valve, actuatable water discharging means associated with said container including mechanism automatically operative upon the actuation of said pumping means and the closure of said dispensing valve for actuating said water discharging means to discharge water from said container.
23. In a device of the class described, in combination with a dispensing line adapted to dispense liquid petroleum product, said line having a dispensing valve, pumping means connected to said line for causing liquid flow through said line when said valve is open, means forming a reservoir connected to said line and adapted to hold the petroleum product to be dispensed and in which reservoir water may accumulate beneath the liquid petroleum, water discharging means connected to said reservoir, means for preventing the operation of the water discharging means when said valve is open, means automatically operated in response to the accumulation of a predetermined volume of water in said reservoir for stopping the flow of liquid petroleum through said dispensing line when said valve is open, and means for automatically rendering said water discharging means effective, when said valve is thereafter closed, to discharge water from the reservoir.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a tank adapted to hold petroleum product and an underlying stratum of water, a dispensing line connected with said tank for dispensing the petroleum product therefrom, a water discharge line connected with said tank for discharging water from said tank, pumping means connected to each of said lines, control means actuated by the water in said tank as the level thereof in said tank varies, means cooperating with said water actuated control means for rendering the pumping means ineffective to force the petroleum product through the dispensing line when the water is at a predetermined high level and other means cooperating with said Water actuated control means for rendering said pumping means ineffective to discharge water through said water discharge line when the water in said tank is at a predetermined low level, and second control means for rendering the pumping means ineilective to discharge water from the tank when the water in said tank is between said line and effective to discharge water from the tank when the water in said tank is between said levels, when the petroleum product is not being dispensed.
25. In a device of the class described for dis-,
16 pensing a liquid petroleum product, means forming a dispensing line having a dispensing control valve, a tank in which water separates from the liquid petroleum product, connected to said dispensing line, a pump in said dispensing line for causing the liquid petroleum product to flow through said line when the dispensing valve is open and be discharged from said tank, a water receiving chamber in direct liquid communication with the lower portion of said tank for receiving from said tank water separated therein, means controlled by the water in said chamber as it reaches one predetermined level therein for discharging water from said chamber, and means controlled by the water in said chamber if it reach a second higher predetermined level in said chamber for rendering said pump inelfective to cause the flow or liquid petroleum product through said dispensing line when the dispensing valve is open.
26. In a liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of means forming a dispensing line connected to a source of petroleum liquid to be dispensed, a dispensing control valve for said line, pumping means associated with said line for causing liquid to flow from said source through said line when the dispensing valve is open and the pump is in operation, means forming a chamber associated with said line into which water separated from petroleum liquid to be dispensed is adapted to collect, means in said chamber operated by a predetermined rise of separated Water therein for discharging water in said chamber to a point outside of said dispensing system, and means operated by the rise of separated water in said chamber above said predetermined rise for stopping the pumping means whereby to prevent the passage of separated water into said dispensing line along with the petroleum liquid- 2'7. In a device for dispensing liquid petroleum fuel, the combination of a relatively large tank receiving liquid petroleum fuel from which water separating therefrom flows to the bottom of said tank, a dispensing line connected to said tank and having a dispensing valve, a pump for causing liquid petroleum fuel to flow from said tank through said dispensing line when the dispensing valve is open, a relatively small chamber in liquid communication with the bottom of said tank to receive the separated water therefrom, water operated means associated with said chamber for controlling said pump, said chamber and said tank and said means having mechanism associated therewith to cause, during dispensing, the operation of said water operated means in response to a relatively small change in the ratio of separated water to fuel in said relatively large tank, whereby to prevent flow of separated water through said dispensing line.
28. In a device for dispensing liquid petroleum fuel, the combination of a dispensing conduit system, a tank in which water separates from the liquid petroleum product, connected to said conduit system, a pump associated with said con duit system for causing the liquid petroleum product to flow through said conduit system and be dispensed from said tank, a water receiving chamher in direct liquid communication with the lower portion of said tank to receive the separated water from said tank, means controlled by the water in said chamber as it reaches one predetermined level therein for discharging the water from said chamber, and means actuated during dispensing when said pump is in operation and controlled by the Water as it reaches a second higher predetermined level in said chamber for rendering said pump ineffective to cause the flow of liquid petroleum product through said conduit system.

In a device for dispensing liquid petroleum product, the combination of a dispensing conduit system, a tank in which water separates from the liquid petroleum product, connected to said conduit system, an electrically operated pump in said conduit system for causing the liquid petroleum product to flow through said conduit system and be discharged from said tank, a water receiving chamber in direct liquid communication with the lower portion of said tank for receiving separated Water from said tank, means controlled by the water in said chamber as it reaches one predetermined level therein for discharging water from said chamber to a point outside of said tank, said means including mechanism for rendering the motor driven pump ineffective to effect a dispensing flow of said petroleum product through said dispensing conduit system during the discharge of water from said chamber, and means controlled by the water as it reaches a second higher predetermined level in said chamber for stopping said pump, whereby to stop the flow of liquid petroleum product through said conduit system.
30. In a device of the class described, in combination with a, dispensing line adapted to dispense a liquid petroleum product, said line having a dispensing valve, pumping means connected to said line for causing liquid to flow through said line during dispensing, means forming a chamber connected to said line, said chamber forming a reservoir for the petroleum product to be dispensed and in which reservoir water may accumulate beneath the liquid petroleum, a water discharge for said chamber, actuatable water dis' charging means associated with said water discharge, means for preventing operation of the actuatable water discharging means during dis-' pensing, and means automatically operated during dispensing and in response to a predetermined level of water in said chamber for stopping the dispensing flow of liquid petroleum through said dispensing line. In a liquid dispensing system, the combination of a storage tank, a liquid dispensing line having an inlet pipe connected to the storage tank for withdrawing liquid petroleum therefrom, a pump in saiddispensing line, a dispensing valve in said dispensing line controlling the flow of petroleum liquid through said dispensing line when the pump is in operation, and power operated pumping means for maintaining accumulated water in the tank below a predetermined level, and means operable as long as said first mentioned pump is forcing liquid petroleumv through the dispensing line for stopping the operation of said power operated pumping means maintaining said water in the tank below said predetermined level.
32. In a liquid dispensing system, the combia nation of a storage tank, a liquid dispensing line having an inlet pipe connected to the storage tank for withdrawing liquid petroleum fuel therefrom, a pump in said dispensing line, a dispensing valve in said dispensing line controlling the flow of. fluid through said dispensing line when the pump is in operation, a water discharging line connected to said storage tank for discharging accumulated water outside of said tank, a pump in said water discharging line, and liquid level actuated control means for said pumps adapted to prevent either one of said pumps forcing liquid through the line to which such particular pump is con- 18 nected while the other pump is forcing liquid through the line to which it is connected.
33. In a liquid dispensing system, the combination of a storage tank, a liquid dispensing line having an inlet pipe connected to the storage tank for withdrawing liquid petroleum fuel therefrom, a pump in said dispensing line, a dispensing valve in said dispensing line controlling the flow of fluid through said dispensing line, a water discharging line connected to said storage tank for withdrawing accumulated water from said tank and discharging it outside of said tank, a pump in said water discharging line, control means for said pumps comprising a liquid level responsive device in said tank, and means controlled thereby for stopping the gasoline pump upon predetermined rise in the water level and for stopping the water pump upon predetermined fall in the water level.

In a liquid dispensing system, the combination of a storage tank, a liquid dispensing line having an inlet pipe connected to the storage tank for withdrawing liquid petroleum fuel therefrom, a petroleum pump for dispensing petroleum through said dispensing line, a water discharge ing line connected to said storage tank, a water pump therein for discharging water from said tank, and liquid level actuated control means operable to stop said water pump when said petroleum pump is forcing petroleum through said dispensing line, and conversely for operating said water pump only when petroleum is not being forced through said dispensing line by said petroleum pump.
35. In a device of the class described, in combination with a receptacle adapted to hold a petroleum product and an underlying stratum of water, a dispensing line for petroleum product connected with said receptacle, means for pumping petroleum product from said receptacle through said dispensing line, a separate Water discharging line connected to said receptacle, separate pumping means for pumping water from said receptacle through said water discharge line, control means for selectively rendering said petroleum product pumping means effective and ineffective to force the petroleum product through said dispensing line and simultaneously rendering said water pumping means ineffective to discharge water through said discharging line when said petroleum product pumping means is effective and said water pumping means effective to discharge water through said discharging line when said petroleum product pumping means is ineffective, and means actuated by the Water in said receptacle as the level thereof in said receptacle varies for rendering the water pumping means ineffective to ump the water through said discharging line when the water is at a low level to prevent said control means from rendering said water pumping means effective at such Water level and rendering the petroleum product pumping means ineffective when the water is at a high level to prevent said control means from rendering said petroleum product pumping means ef fective when the water is at such high level.
36. In a device for dispensing gasoline or other liquid petroleum product, the combination of means forming a dispensing line having a dispensing valve therein to control the flow of gasoline or other petroleum product therethrough, a container connected to said line adapted to hold a quantity of gasoline or other petroleum product and an underlying segregated stratum of water, pumping means associated with said line for causing the flow of gasoline or other petroleum product therethrough and through said dispensing valve, a by-pass line associated with said pumping means and operable When said p m g means is in operation and said dispensing valve is closed for by-passing the liquid in said dispensing line around said pump, Water pumping means connected with said container, and control means connected to the dispensing line and op erated by pressure conditions therein created by the operation of said by-pass for automatically rendering said Water pumping means effective to pump water from said container during the circulation of gasoline or other petroleum product through said by-pas's line, and to render said water pumping means ineffective to pump water from said container upon the opening of'said dispensing control valve.
37. In a device of the class described for dispensing liquid petroleum product from a reservoir which may contain an accumulation of water, said device comprising a dispensing line adapted to be connected to said reservoir for dispensing the liquid petroleum product, pumping means connected to said line for dispensing the liquid petroleum product through said line, valve means in said line for controlling the flow of liquid petroleum product through said dispensing line, a water discharge line adapted to be connected to said resevoir, means including. a Water pump connected to said water discharge line for discharging water fromthe reservoir through said Water discharge line, andmeans responsive to the opening and closing of said valve means for rendering said water discharging means ineffective to discharge the Water when said valve means is opened and effective to discharge the water when said valve means is closed.
38 In a device of the class described, the combination of a tank adapted to hold petroleum product and an underlying stratum of Water, a dispensing line connected with said tank for dispensing the petroleum product therefrom, a water discharge line connected With said tank for discharging water from said tank, pumping means connected to each of said lines, control means actuated by the water in said tank as the level thereof in said tank varies for rendering the pumping meansineifec-tive to force the'petroleum product through the dispensing line when the water is at a predetermined high level and rendering said pumping means ineffective to discharge water through said Water discharge line when the water in said tank is a ta predetermined low level, and control means for rendering the pumping means ineffective to discharge water from the tank when the water insaid tank is between said levels and while the petroleum product is being dispensed from said tank through said dispensing line and efifective to discharge water from the tank'when the Water in said tank is between said levels, when the petroleum product is not being dispensed.
39. In a device ofthe class described, in combination with a receptacle adapted to hold petroleum product and-an underlying stratum of water, a dispensing line for petroleum product connected with said receptacle, means for propelling petroleum product from said receptacle through said dispensing line, a separate water discharging-line connected to said receptacle, separate pumping means for pumping Water from said receptacle through said water discharge line, and means for rendering said water pumping means ineffective to discharge Water from the reservoir when the petroleum product pumping means is causing a dispensing flow through thedis-pensing line.
40. In a device of the-class described, in combination with a receptacle adapted to holdpetroleum product and an underlying stratum of water, a dispensing line for petroleum product connected with said receptacle, means for propelling petroleum product from said receptacle through said dispensing line, a separate Water discharging line connected to said receptacle, separate pumping means for pumping water from said receptacle through said water discharge line, and means operative automatically upon cessation of dispensing flow of petroleum through said dispensing line, for operating the water pumping means to dischargewater from said reservoir.
