Description
(NoModeL) D. & C. W. SMOUSE. Sugar Evaporator.
Patented April 12,1881.

W ATTORNEYS kPETi-RS. PflOTO-UYHOGRAFNER. WASHINGTON n c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID SMOUSE AND CHARLES W. SMOUSE, OF WASHINGTON, IOWA.
SUGAR-EVAPORATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,195, dated Apri1'12, 1881.
Application filed February 19,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, DAVID SMOUSE and CHARLES W. SMOUSE, of Washington, in the county of Washington and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Sugar-Evaporators; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a top view of our invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
This invention relates to sugar-evaporators;
" and it consists in the device hereinafter de scribed.
In the annexed drawings, Ais an evaporatin g-pan, made preferablyrectangular, and having an ofl'set, B.
In the corner a, at the same end with offset B, but opposite thereto, is located a block, G. This block is fitted to the pan, and on its inside is eurved at 0, so as to form a round corner. The under side of this block is recessed out at 67, leaving ribs 6 6, so that when seated in the pan there will be a space, g, between the block and the bottom of the pan. Leading down through the block into recess cl is a passage, h.
Located in the main portion of the pan, beyond where the offset B joins the same, is located a filter, D, of any suitable construction and material. In front of said filter, in the sides a of the pan, are grooves or ways n n, inclined from the top of said filter forward and downward, in which said grooves the sliding jacket E moves.
F is the front or receiving portion of the pan; G, the rear or distributing portion.
H is an air-tight cover, having top p, flanges r 1', open end .9, and inclined end it, and handle '0. This cover fits the portion G of the pan, the flanges r r fitting snugly inside sides a a of the pan, having its open end sjust behind the filter l) and its inclined end t extending toward the end b of the pan, and having a gage upon its face.
The filter D is placed in the pan, the cover H" is put on, the jacket E slid into place, and the round corner 0 is fastened in by a loop, K, and pin 1, orjn any proper manner, and the device is ready for use. The sirup is poured down passage lb, and passing through space g wells up into the front portion, F, of the pan. The jacket E is regulated to suit the flow. Coming in contact with said jacket, the incoming stream is guided to offset B, to which point the pressure forces all impurities, scum, gummy, limy matter, 850., where it is drawn ofl". The sirup freed from these passes underjacket E, through filter D, into rear portion, G, where it is subjected to heat from below, the airtight coverH keeping in the steam and insuring a favorable action. The gage upon inclined endtshows the amou nt in pan. Through opening to the sirup is then drawn off into the finishing-pan. By this device all impurities are removed from the sirup, whereby ahigher gradeof sirups or of sugar can be made.
What we claim is An evaporating pan having offset B, round corner 0, jacket E, filter D, and airtight cover H.
2. The round corner or block (3, having ribs 6 e, a recess, d, forming a space, 9, and passage h.
3. The air-tight cover H, having inclinedend t, with a gage, flanges r r, and open end 8, in combination with filter D and pan A.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
