- SPOKE-TENONING AND FI ILLY-BORING MACHIN E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,014, dated April 12, 1881.
i Application filed January 26, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN M. EsrEs, of Clinton, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Spoke-Tenoning and Felly- Boring Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side view. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a plan view.
This invention relates to devices for boring, tenoning spokes, &c.
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A is a bench supported upon legs a, and having the longitudinal slot B.near one end.
0 is a post, whose tenon b projects down through slotB and isheld by the nut 0. Through tenon b is a slot or screw-threaded hole, through which'passes the screw-rod D, having handled, by means of which post O can be moved along the bench A..' Post 0 is slotted transversely at c, forming arms E EE J ournaled in this slot 0 are the gear-wheels F G H, the shaft f of the firsthavin g the cranked handle f foroperation.
Passing, through holes 9 g in arms E E and hub h of wheel H is a shaft, I,- carrying a chuck, K, with set-screw It at one end and a balancewheel, L, at the other end, towardcranked handlef. A slot or groove, 6, on shaft Iengages a pin, h, on the inside of hub h, so that said shaft will turn with the wheel H, but can he slid lengthwise independent of the wheel.
Extending to one side from the base of post O is an arm, M, having at its end an upright post,
N, extending above at n and below at n.
Attached to arm M, near to bench A, is another post, P, having at or near its bottom the pair of slots 1010. Passing through these slots are tread les Q Q, pivoted to the lower end of post N, and connected by rods q q with the arms rr of the triple lever B, which is pivoted to the upper part of post P. The third arm, 1*, of this lever is connected to a rigid rod, S, made fast to a lever, T, which is pivoted to the upper end of post N, and whose other and forked end, t, straddles a groove, o, in shaft I.
Lengthwise of bench A, upon the end away from slot B, and upon the side of post 0 to which the chuck end of shaft I projects, is a table, U, hung to said bench by transverse swinging staples or loops u 10, having their ends a to extending into holes in the sides of the bench and their bodies a a passed through loops 8 s, by which they are held in grooves t t at the ends of said table. This table has on top the longitudinal grooves r r.
Projecting through a central enlarged slot in the table U is a rod, V, made fast to bench A, and havinga nut, M, at its top.
W is a platform, having ribs w w on its under side, lengthwise, and a hole, w, near its center. This platform is placed on table U, the
ribs to w resting in grooves r r and the rod V passing through hole to.
X is a lifting-screw, having the handle 00, and projects through a hole, D in the bottom of bench A, and comes up under table U.
Made fast to the side of post P away from post 0 is a slotted gage,Y, held tight by a binding-screw, Z, passing through slotyinto post P.
This device can be used for boring, drilling, or cutting of any kind byputting the shank of the implement into chuck K and making it fast nut a 8 5 By the lifting-screw X the table U is lifted up and the platform W rises, the ribs to w slidin g in grooves r W, and rod V keeping the said platform from horizontal motion until the work is at the proper height for the tool.
A shaft carrying a chuck and supported in bearings in such a manner that the same may be advanced and retracted by a hand-lever is not new, and such a construction is not claimed herein.
A tenoning-tool is made fast in the chuck K, and the gage Y is set to allow the swinging leverT, and consequently the shaftI, theproper play for the determined length of stroke. The
post 0, with its various devices, is set up to the 100 work by the rod D. Power is applied to the crank f of shaft f, and through the gear-wheels is transmitted to shaft 1, which causes the tool to turn. As it cuts, the shaft is forced inward by pressing on the treadle Q, which pulls lever T and shaft I toward the work. After finishing the tool is Withdrawn by pressing on the other treadle, Q.
Other classes of work can be placed on the platform W and held in any proper manner to be operated on.
In operating on spokes it may be advisable to place a support under them on top of platform W. Z is a T-gage designed to guide the spoke while driving to the required dish of wheel.
What I claimis- 1. Shaft f, having crank f, wheels F G H, the latter having a pin, 71/, on the inside, in combination with shaft I, having grooves 41 and o, forked lever T, and treadles for operating the same, substantially as described.
2. In a tenoning and boring machine, the combination of the adjustable post G, carrying the arm M, having slotted post P and post N,
the pivoted treadles Q Q, rods qq,triple lever B, and pivoted forked lever T, with the grooved shaft 1. i7 and gearing F G H, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a tenoning and boring machine, the combination, with the bench A, of the swingin gtableU,having central opening and grooves, r 7 connected by loops u u to the bench A, with the platform W, having ribs 20 w on its under side, lengthwise, and a hole, 20, near its center, and the rod V and lifting-screw X, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. Table U, held to bench A by swinging loops, and provided with grooves on top, in combination with platform W, having ribs to w on its under side, and a lifting-screw, sub stantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN M. ESTES.
