, SMOKER'S ARTICLE Filed June 10, 1943 7/? f \a l v Patented Mar. 26, 1946 UNITED STATE-5 PAT T, QFFIC-E Jens R. Schultz, Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii Application June 10, 1943, Serial No. 490,323
1 Claim.
This invention relates to an article for smokers and is applicable to tobacco pipes and cigar and cigarette holders.
It is particularly aimed to provide a construction which utilizes a spiral passage or channel for th smoke, and is particularly aimed to provide one which will expose the maximum amount of smoke to a cooling influence, without increasing the normal effort of smoking, even when partially clogged with tar deposits, generally affording a milder, cooler smoke than at present is attainable, and with less efiect on sensitive stomachs.
In addition, it is aimed to provide a structure which readily may be disassembled and cleaned.
The more specific objects and advantages will becom apparent from a consideration of the descrition following taken in connection with accompanying drawing illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a tobacco pipe em.
bodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on the plane of line 3-3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is an elevation of the stem detached.
Referring specifically to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, I designates a tobacco pipe bowl which may be made of briarwood or any other suitable material. This bowl is to be taken as representative since it may be a bowl, a cigarette holder, a cigar holder, or the like. This specific element III has a well at II in which the tobacco is disposed and ignited, and from which the smoke is withdrawn through a passage or channel I2 which preferably has a vertical portion I3 in communication with the well II centrall of its base.
Separable from the element I0 is a stem I4, a mouthpiece I5, also separable from the stem, and the stem and portions of the element I0 and mouthpiece I5 are surrounded and detachably engaged with a sleeve or shell I6.
Stem I4 may be made of any suitable material, preferably in one piece, as, for instance, from a suitable plastic, hard rubber, metal, or the like.
At one end stem I4 extends slidably and removably into a socket or recess I! of the element or bowl I0, abutting the same at the beveled end I8 and has an annular flange at I9 and a tapered portion 20. Stem I4 has a passage at 2I communicating with the passage I2 and having 10 it traverses the spiral passage.
branches 22 which deliver the smoke peripherally or the stem and into the interior of the shell I6, passing around the peripher of the stem in a spiral passag 23, defined by a spiral rib or flight 5 24 in intimate contact with the bore wall of the 23 will enter a central longitudinal chamber 26 of the stem and then enter a tube 21 whose bore 28 communicates with the bore or passage 29 of the mouthpiece. Tube 21 may be made integral with the mouthpiece I5 or separate therefrom, as desired, and the tube and mouthpiece may be made of any suitable material, for in-- stance, plastic, hard rubber, or any equivalent.
It will be noted that the shell I6 is separably connected to the bowl II) or equivalent by a tapered sliding fit or equivalent joint at 30. Also,
mouthpiece I5 is detachably applicable to the other end of the shell I6 as by a tapered sliding fit at 3|. The inner end of mouthpiece I5 preferably does not contact the adjacent end of the 30 stem I4 and hence a passage is provided whereby the smoke from the spiral passage 23 may enter the chamber 26,
To facilitate manipulation of the shell and mouthpiece in disassembling and assembling 85 them, for cleaning and adjustment of the pipe or other smokers article, the shell I6 is preferably enlarged and exteriorly at a multiplicity of ribs or the like 32, such ribs at the particular point shown functioning also in the dissipation of heat. Mouthpiece I5 preferably has an enlargement at 33 of any desired external configuration, to facilitate gripping and manipulation oi it.
Various changes may be resorted to provided that they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
A smokers pipe comprising a bowl having a lateral shank, said bowl and shank having a passageway therethrough, the outer portion of the shank being internally and externally tapered, a shell having its opposite ends internally tapered, one end of the shell being wedgedly disposed over the tapered end of the shank, a hollow stem disposed in the shell and provided with an extension in one end thereof protruding into the passageway of the shank and having a tapered portion for wedged engagement in the shank, said stem being provided with a spiral rib on its periphery for snug engagement with the inside of the shell and to define a spiral passageway ex- 5 tending substantially from one end interior'point to the other of the shell, a mouthpiece having a tapered inner end for wedged engagement in the 1 remaining end of the shell, said mouthpiece having a passageway and a tube projecting from the mouthpiece and in alignment with the passage said stem at its open end terminating in spaced relation with respect to the adjacent end of the mouthpiece.
