Description

UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
JNO. GEO. WIDMANN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STOVE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 23,970, dated May 10, 1859; Reissued October 14, 1873, No. 5,605.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. G. WIDMANN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, represents a vertical central section of a stove constructed according to my improvements. Fig. 2, is a horizontal section of ditto, the line w, 00, Fig. 1, indicating the plane of section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
To enable others skilled in the, art to fully understand and construct my invention, 1 will proceed to describe it.
A, is a fire grate which is supported by a plate B, which rests on a casing C, which serves for the double purpose of receiving the ashes dropping through the grate and of admitting atmospheric air to the fire. The casing C, is provided with a door a, which is open if the fire is going. Arranged over the grate is the supply cylinder D, the lower part of which is perforated with open ings b, which extend up about one-fourth of the whole height of the cylinder, and which may be constructed ,in various ways, by
1 merely cutting openings through the sides of the cylinder, as represented in the drawings, or by placing the upper part of the cylinder on columns which are close enough together so as to leave spaces between themselves, similar to the openings 6, represented in Fig. 1, or in any other suitable manner.
Access is had to the supply cylinder D, by means of an opening 0, in its top, and a cover 0 fits nicely into the same, so as to prevent the escape of any gases or smoke arising from the coal in the cylinder to the upper compartment of the stove, and two tubes d, cl, form a communication between the upper part of the supply cylinder and the space close over the fire grate.
A separate compartment E, is placed on the top of the supply cylinder D, and the whole is surrounded by a shell F, which communicates with the chimney by means of a pipe G. A door 6, leads from the exterior to the compartment E, which is otherwise perfectly free, so that the heat strikes the same from all sides, and another door f, in the lower part of the shell F, and opposite the perforated part of the supply cyl inder D, and into which one or more panels of isinglass are inserted, serves to expose the operation of the stove to the eye of the observer.
The operation is as follows: After the fire has been lighted on the grate A, the supply cylinder D, is fitted with coal, which is introduced by the opening 0, and the cover 0 is placed so as to fit nicely. Air is admitted to the fire through the door a, in the casing C, and that portion of the coal which is contained in the perforated part of the cylinder D, is ignited and the heat escapes through the openings 7), as indicated by the red arrows. The upper portion of the coal in the supply cylinder above the perforated part of the same can not ignite as no air has access to the same, but it will heat sufficiently so as to emit gases and smoke which would escape to the chimney or through the opening 0, if the cover 0 was left off or if the same would not fit closely. No other way to escape being left to these gases they will pass out by the tubes cl, which conduct the same back into the space close over the fire grate where they pass into the fire. Thus not a particle of the heating capacity of the coal is wasted. The heat from the fire plays freely around the compartment E, above the cylinder D, and the same is therefore particularly adapted for cooking or baking, and as it is completely inclosed in the shell F, the appearance of the stove is such that the same serves for a parlor stove as well as for a cooking stove.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement and combination of the gas tubes (03) with the cylinder D, and fire openings (1)), so that the gases which arise from the heating of the coal will be compelled to pass down into the fire, as herein shown and described.
JOHN GEORGE WIDMANN.
