UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
LOYD J. CALDWELL, OF MILLERSBURG, INDIANA.
FEED-GRINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,600, datei April `5, 1881,
Application filed August 1B, 1880. (No model.)
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, LOYD J. CALDWELL, of Millersbnrg, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented certain new andfuseful Improvements in Feed-Grinders; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use ther same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure lis a side view of my improved feedgrinder. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same.
This invention has reference to improvements inv feed-grinding by a reeiprocatin g motion; and it consists of a corrugated four or more sided grinding shaft or blade, with or without angular blades thereon, adapted to iit and operate in a corrugated tube with a hopper with a feeding-gate, which is lifted only (to feed the grain into the grinding-tube) when the grinding-shaft, on its upward stroke, rises into the hopper, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, A indicates a corrugated four or more sided grinding-sh aft, which may also be fitted with angular or oblique blades ci a. This shaft is reciprocated vertically Within a correspondingly-corrugated tube, A. The lower end of this grinding-shaft is provided with adish or receptacle, b, set at an inclination With the shaft, and having a chute which discharges the ground grain falling thereon from between the shaft and the tube.` The tube Al has attached at its lower end al plate, c, with a set-screw, c', to secure that end thereofto the supporting-frame, while its upper end may likewise be fastened in position, as shown.
C is the hopper, 'suitably supported upon the supporting-piece of the tube A. This hopper is provided with a feed-gate, B, which lifts only as the upper end of the grinding-shaft rises into the hopper, which permits of the feeding' of the grain in the hopper down between, and to he ground by the shaft and the sides of the tube.`
The shaft and tube may be triangular` in cross'section and adapted to operate together, while their corner-angles form the sides.
Having thus fully described my invention, l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States ln alieedfgrinder of the described class, the
combination, with the grinding-tube A', hav-V ing hopper C and vertically-reciprocating corrugated grinding shaft or staff A, of the feedgate `B, placed in the bottom of the hopper around the shaft, and lifted or closed alternately as the shaft rises or sinks in the hopper, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own l have hereto affixed my signaturein presence of two Witnesses.
LOYD JOSEPH CALDWELL.
