Kleven, Augusta, Maine Application July 13, 1944, Serial No. 544,689 3 Claims. (01. 36-195) My present invention relates to footwear and its manufacture.

The principal object of my invention is to provide a shoe of attractive appearance and satisfactory wearing qualities that is adapted to economical manufacture.

I accomplish this result by making an upper with excess stock marginally of the line defining that portion of the upper that is to engage with the sole structure in the completed shoe. The upper is then attached along that line to the sole structure or to one of its elements and the flap established by the marginal stock is then folded upwardly against the upper and attachedthereto.

By this construction, I provide a shoe, the upper of which has a trim abutting the sole structure. The trim is defined by the flap and it conceals the stitching or other means by which the upper is attached to the sole. The trim may be attached to the upper in any desired way as by stitching or lacing to add to the ornamentation of the shoe and the upper may be perforated, before its assembly to the sole structure, to facilitate the attachment of the flap to the upper.

In the accompanying drawing, I have shown illustrative embodiments of my invention from which the novel features and advantages of my footwear and the method of its manufacture will be readily apparent.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a shoe in accordance with my invention.

Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing a different attachment of the flap to the upper, and

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary cross section of the shoe of Fig. 2.

At 5, I have indicated an upper which may be of any desired design and construction except that I form it with a preferably uniform amount of excess stock 6 marginally of that portion 1 of the upper that abuts the sole structure in the completed shoe.

The sole structure may be of any desired type. The upper may be attached to a platform, midsole, insole or even to a sock lining afterwards attached to the platform, midsole or insole. I have indicated the sole structure generally at 8 with the sole element to which the upper is attached being shown as a midsole 9 having a marginal trim in stitched thereto.

The upper 5 is attached to the sole element 9 in any desired way, here shown as by a line of 9 and its trim l0 and through the upper, where there is upper stock.

The marginal stock 6 is then folded upwardly and attached to the upper 5 in any desired manner to establish an ornamentative and reinforcing trim.

In Fig. 1 I have shown the marginal stock 6 as stitched to the upper 5 as at l2 while in Fig. 2 I have shown such attachment of the stock 6 by means of a lacing I3. Particularly where lacings 13 are used, it is desirable to form the upper 5 with lace receiving perforations M before the upper is attached to the sole structure.

From the foregoing it will be apparent that my invention makes possible, on an economical basis, the manufacture of shoes of a wide range of attractive styles without sacrifice in their quality.

What I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A shoe, comprising an upper and a sole element, said upper having excess stock marginally of the line of contact of the upper with the sole element when the upper is properly assembled thereon, means attaching the upper to the sole element along that line, said marginal stock being folded upwardly against the outer surface of the upper and said upper and said upwardly folded marginal stock having a series of spaced apertures on opposite sides of the line of contact of the upper and the sole element, and attaching means extending through said apertures and fastening said marginal stock to the upper.

2. A shoe comprising a platform sole having a binding secured to the edge thereof, an upper secured to the platform sole adjacent the margin thereof by a line of stitching extending through the platform sole and upper, said upper having marginal portions folded upwardly against the outer surface of the upper and secured thereto by a line of stitching, and a wear sole attached below said platform sole.

A shoe comprisin a platform sole having a binding secured to the edge thereof, an upper secured to the platform sole adjacent the margin thereof by a line of stitching extending through the platform sole and upper, said upper having marginal portions folded upwardl against the outer surface of the upper, said upper and said upturned marginal portions each having spaced alignable perforations, fastening means extending through the perforations of the upper and the upturned marginal portions, respectively, for uniting said parts, and a wear sole attached below said platform sole.
