The principal objects of the present invention. are to provide for quickly and easily locking the cover to the body without the use of separate locking means, to provide for quickly and easily releasing the cover locking means, and to provide for simplicity and economy of construction. The invention consists in providing at least one wall of the body'with a flap that extends upwardly through an opening provided therefor in the top ofthe cover and is bent downwardly over the corresponding wall of the cover and thence upwardly around the lower edge of the cover wall and tucked between the latter and the body wall. The invention also con- 1.
sists in the construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a shipping carton emp bodying my invention,
Fig.- 2 is a side elevational view thereof, partly in vertical section,
' Fig. 3 is an end view ofsaid carton, Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical fragmentary section on the line 4-4 in Fig. 1,
Fig. 5 is a similar section on the line 5-5 in Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary horizontal section on the line 6-6 in Fig. 3,
Fig. 7 is an end elevational view, showing the locking flap of the body of the carton extending upwardly through the slot in the cover thereof; and Y Fig. 8 is an end elevational view, showing the body and cover in separated relation.
In the accompanying drawing, my invention is shown embodied in a shipping carton comprising a body A and a slip cover B therefor, both made of corrugated board, flberboard orA other bendable material. The body A is made from a blank which is folded up around the bottom I of the body as a basis to form upstanding side and l 'the end walls 3 and by folding free marginal extensions or iiaps 3a. of said end walls downwardly lation to said and inwardly along side of said side wall flaps so as to abut edgewise against the bottom I of said body. Thus, the end walls 3 and rebent margins 3a thereof, together with the side wall flaps 2a therebetween,` form three-ply end walls. Ihe corners of the cover B may be formed in a similar manner; that is, by providing the end walls 6 with marginal flaps 6a that are rebent on the inner sides of said walls to hold the inwardly bent end flapsia of the side walls 5 between said end walls and their rebent marginal flaps.
AS shown in the drawing, the end flaps or extensions 2a of the side walls 2 of the body A are disposed in endwise abutting relation midway of said side walls, while the end flaps or extensions 5a of the side walls 5 of the cover B are spaced apart at their adjacent ends. The rebent margins 3a of the end walls 3 of thebody A are held against the end flaps or extensions 2a of the side walls thereof by means of a sheet 1 of corrugated board that snugly nts within said body and rests on the bottom I thereof in edgewise abutting rerebent end wall margins. The re bent margins 6a of the end walls B of the cover B are held against the end flaps or extensions 5a o the side walls 5 thereof by means of locking tabs 8 that project upwardly from said margins and t within openings 9 provided therefor in the top 4 of said cover.
The end walls 3 of the body A are slit, as at I Il, to provide hinged locking tabs I I vthat are detached along three sides but are integral with said walls along the rebent top edges thereof. The locking tabs I I are preferably located midway of the side walls 2- of the body A; and the cover B has elongated openings or slots I2 in its top 4 midway of its side walls 5 of a length corresponding to the width of said locking tabs. 'As shown in therdrawing, the slots I2 are located at the ends of the cover B with their inner longitudinal edges spaced .inwardly of the upturned margins 6a of the end walls 6 and with their outer longitudinal edges located in said end walls just below the top edges of said upturned margins. To apply the cover B to the body A, the locking tabs I I are bent into an upright position and directed through the elongated slots I2 in the top 4 'of the cover. The cover B is then slipped over margins 6a thereof and the portions of the body side wall extensions 2a that are uncovered by the portionsof body end walls 3 that are cut away to form said locking ilaps. As shown in the drawing, the locking flaps il are scored transversely, as at I3, so as to facilitate bending thereof.
The cover B is unlocked by inserting the fingers between the tuck portions of the locking flaps Il and withdrawing such portions downwardly from their positions. between the end walls of the body and cover, the tuck portions of said flaps having finger openings Il formed therein to facilitate such withdrawal. The released locking flaps il are then bent upwardly' into vertical position, thereby permitting the cover A to be lifted vertically from the body B and said flaps withdrawn through the slots i2 in the top 4 of said cover.
The above described construction enables the cover to be quickly and easily locked and unlocked; it dispenses with separate fasteners; the opening formed in the end walls of the body by the locking flaps provides a clear space for the tuck portions thereof; and the abutting end flaps or extensions of the side walls of the body close said opening and protect the contents of the carton from injury by the fingers in locking and unlockingl said cover.
Obviously, the hereinbefore described carton construction admits of .considerable modification without departing from the invention. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction described.
What I claim is:
l. A carton comprising a body and a cover therefor, said body having an upstanding wall and said cover having a top with a vertical opening therethrough and a depending edge flange overhanging said wall, said wall having alocking tab thereon that is extended upwardly through said opening and is bent outwardly and downwardly outside said flange and isthence rebent upwardly around the lower edgefof said flange and releasably tucked between said wall and said flange.

'7. A carton comprising a body and a slip cover therefor, said body having multi-ply end walls and said cover having openings therethrough above said end Walls and depending end flanges overhanging said end walls, the outer plies of said walls being slit to provide locking tabs at the upper edgesthereof, said locking tabs being extended upwardly through said openings and bent downwardly outside of said end flange and thence rebent upwardly around the lower edges of said end anges and tucked between the latter and an inner ply of said end walls.
` 8. A carton comprising a body and a slip cover therefor, said body having multi-ply end walls and said cover having vertical openings therethrough above said end walls and depending end flanges overhanging said end walls, the outer plies of said end walls being slit to provide spaces between said end walls and end flanges and locking tabs that project from the upper edges of said! end walls, said locking tabs being extended upwardly through said vertical openings, thenceI outwardly over said cover, thence downwardly outside said end flanges and thence upwardly around the lower edges of said end flanges into the spaces between the latter and said end walls.
