TILE-MILL ATTACHMENT.
sPEcIFIcA'rIoN'formin part of Letters Patent No. 239,280, dated March 22, 1881:
Application filed August 26, 1880. Model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT W. STEWART, of Mount Victory, in the county of Hardin, and in the State of Ohio, have invented, certain new and useful Improvements in Tile-VIill Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improve, ments in tile-machines in which the slab of clay or other plastic material is cutinto suitable lengths by means of a series of wires mounted in a suitable frame. In this class of machines the wires become clogged with the material at each cutting operation, which has to be removed .prior to the next, in order to give a clear, clean cut. Heretofore the material thus retained upon the wires has been removed by wiping the wires successively by hand, which is a tedious operation, and expensive on account of the time required.
My invention is designed to obviate these objections and provide a means by which all of the wires may be wiped simultaneously by suitable mechanism operated by a movement of the foot of the attendant in charge of the machine. I attain the desired objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents a top view of my improved apparatus, and Fig. 2 a transverse vertical section thereof.
The letter A indicates the table or bed of the machine, upon which the slab of clay or other plastic material to be cut into tiles is placed, and B a frame hinged to the upper edge of the bed or table, at the rear, and carrying a series of cutting-wires, (J.
The letter D indicates a series of vertical guide-rods, secured to the edge of the table at the rear of the same, one of said rods beingin line with each of the cutting-wires, for the purpose hereinafter explained.
The letter E indicates a bar or beam, located at the rear of the apparatus and extending longitudinally from end to end of the same. To the said rod are attached a series of upright metallic strips, F, which are bent forwart at right angles at their upper ends, the bent ends being perforated, as indicated, and
set over the guide-rods, so as to traverse the same when the bar or beam E is reciprocated vertically. The said bent ends are slotted, as shown, and are V-shaped at their extremities, for the purpose hereinafter explained, and to the said bent ends are secured the wipers G,
which are similarly slotted and formed at their extremities. In the iiresentinstance the wirecarrying frame is represented as stationary; but when it is made to slide back and forth,
as is sometimes the case, the guide-rods must be arranged to move with it. The bar or beam E is secured to the long arm of a foot-lever, H, which is pivoted at I to the table, the short arm forming a treadle, by means of which the beam E and wipers may be operated, the long arm of the lever being of sufficient length to cause the wipers to travel the full length of the wires, as more fully hereinafter explained.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood in connection with the above de- 7 5 scription, and is as follows After the tiles have been cut the wire-carryin gframe is thrown back on its hinges, the wires entering the slots in thewipers, being guided thereto by the V- shaped extremities thereof. By operating the So lever the wipers will be caused to traverse the wires, removing all material from the sameinstantaneousl y.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the wire carrying frame of a tile-cnttin g machine and the wires thereof, a series of slotted reciprocating wipers adapted to traverse said wire when the frame is elevated, to remove adherin material, substantially as specified.
2. In combination with the wire-carrying frame and wires thereof, the vertical guiderods secured to the table, and the wipers adapt- 5 ed to travel on said rods and secured to abar or beam attached to a foot-lever fulcrumed to the apparatus, the whole arranged to operate substantially in the manner specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I 10c have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of August, 1880.
R. W. STEWART.
