Description

` tion and operation of the sam .To all whom t may concern f UNITED STATES EEICE.
PATENT THOMAS J. MAGNER AND `CHARLES L. THOMAS, OF HORNELLSVILLE, N. Y.
FIFTH-WHEEL 'SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters.
Application filed January 8, 1881. (Model.)
Be it known that we, THOMAS J. MAGNER and CHARLES L. THOMAS, of Hornellsville, in the county of Steuben and State ot' New York, have invented a new and Valuable Improvement in Fifth-Wheels for Vehicles; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, a-nd exact description of the construce, reference be ing had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.-
Figure l of the drawings is a front view. liig. 2 is a section taken the length of the device. Fig. 3 is a plan view.
This invention relates to fifth-wheel connections for vehicles.
The invention consists `in the construction hereinafter described `and claimed.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Ais the front axle, supporting' on its top the lower member, B, ofthe fifth-wheel connections. This member B consists of a bar, C, having at its ends the circle-bars b b on top, and the 'perforated lugs c c depending,r from said ends, and at its middle the lower fi. til-wheel plate, D, having the perforated lugs d xtenliug downward, and a central boss, d', projecting upward, said boss having a hole, d2, therethrough countersunk below at d3. This member, as described, is to be cast in one piece. It is seated upon the top of axle A, the latter itting snugly between the depending lugs, and bolts are passed through said lugs, and held below by tie-plates e and nuts e', the heads of said bolts being countersunk into tops of circle-bars b b and lower i'th-wheel plate, D;
The upper member, F, of the fifth-wheel connections consists of a bar, Gr, similar to bar C, having at its ends, on the lower side, circle-bars ff, tting and corresponding with circle-bars b b of the lower member, fins g g, projecting upward at said ends, and midway between these pins a hole countersnuk below, at its middle, fifth-wheel plate, H, having central perforation, h, corresponding to and to receive central boss, d', of the lower plate, D, having a perforated 1ug,h, projecting forward, and the arm I backward and downward, to be attached to the reach, fins g3 g3, projecting upward at the uab-Wheel upon the lower side, the upper FOR VEHICLES.
Patent No. 239,262, dated March 22, 1881.
plate H, and ribs K K, midway between such plate and the circle-bars, terminating at each side in the perforated lugs 7c lc. This member, as described, is to be cast in one piece. The bolster or head-block L is Seated thereon between the iins and lugs described, tting snugly, and is held by bolts M M passing through the ends of the b olster and holes iu bar G.
The perforations in lugs dd are countersunk at the top, and passing through said perforations, with heads resting in the conntersinks, are bolts N N, tting close on each side of the axle, and held below the same by tie-plate N and nuts n a. Projecting downward from the middle, and integral with said tie-plate N', is a stud, P, having collar p and reduced screw-threaded end p.
R is a brace-arm, attached to the under side of the reach, corresponding to arm I. This arm extends under the axle, and has a perforation, r, at its end, and another, rf, where stud P comes. This stud passes through perforaperforation r. S is a bolt passing through perforated lug h' and perforation r of arm R.
T is the king-bolt, its head resting in couiltersinlrdet-holedz, its body t passing through said hole, said body being round where it rests in the boss d', and up through the bolster L, where it is made angular, and said bolt being held at top by nut t'.
The bolts N N, clasping the front axle, take the place of the cheek-pieces" of the ordinary clip king-bolt, and, together with the kingbolt T, supply the place of said clip kingbolt. The central boss, d', and the swivel-connection of the stud l) with arm R, form the turning-[Join ts in cramping. The king-bolt, being held rigid by its angular portion inthe bolster, turns by its round portion within the central boss.
V V are the clips for holding the the bolster, their ends being Instead of using only one from the reach to the upper fifth-wheel plate, we may use two such bars running to the plate, or to the bar Gr when used for a buggy.
Instead of using the bolt S, the arm R may spring to held in lugs 7c k.
be extended uparound andjoined to the lower bar I, ruimingl double-reach IOO side of the upper fifth-wheel plate, H, at the lug h'.
l. The lower fth-wheel plate, D, having perforated lugs d d and central perforated boss, d', bolts N N, tie-plate N', having stud P, with collar p and screw-threaded reduced end p', and upper fifth-wheel plate, H, having central perforation, h, in combination with king-bolt T, having its body round below and angular above, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The lower member of the fifth-wheel 'connection, consisting of bar C, circle-bars b b, perforated lugs c c, lower lifth-wheel plate, D, having perforated lugs CZ d and perforated central boss, d', all made in one piece, in combination with the upper member, consisting of' bar G, circle-bars ff, hns g g, upper fifth- Wheel plate, H, having central perforation, la, perforated lug h', and arm I, tins g3 g3, and
ribs K K, having perforated lugsv k 7'c,'all made in one piece, substantiallyas described.
3. Thecombination of king-bolt T, bolts N N, lower fifth-wheel plate, D, upper fifth-wheel 2 5` THOMAS J. MAGNER. CHARLES LEE THOMAS.
